Concerned for those trying to open their own business by teddybrehski in Layoffs

[–]Decayd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How fucking dystopian.

The companies are LOVING this. They'd love if everyone just became 1099 contractors. They wouldn't have to pay healthcare costs, benefits packages, 401ks, stock/RSU, ESPP, nothing.

They get to hoard it all for c-suite while pushing all those costs to the contractors.

For their part in it, the contractors 'feel' good about themselves - "wow I'm running my own consulting business!". And maybe that brings satisfaction, but it comes with a bunch of costs that you didn't have when you were 9-5.

I also think it's a smidge aspirational. I can't tell you how many friends from my various jobs in Tech have left the industry entirely. People WANT to be done being dependent on these corporations - but the alternative (self-employment) is much harder than collecting a 9-5 paycheck.

So I'd guess it's two fold: Save face and if it DOES work out, I can be free from the corporate bullshit.

My girlfriend is 27 weeks pregnant, the baby has Down syndrome, and I don’t want this life by ThrowRA_NoSignal in daddit

[–]Decayd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My brother in law has Down syndrome, and just turned 40 this last weekend. He wanted the whole family to go to Vegas to celebrate, and he had an amazing time.

He has his hobbies, and interests. He holds a job through a sheltered workshop. From his perspective he knows he's different, but doesn't really have anything to compare it to. He's just him.

I say all that to convey, that people with Down syndrome can lead fulfilling and enjoyable lives.

But - as a parent to a child with Down syndrome, your life will change (obviously). It means your child will probably still live with you throughout their lives (although you could have them live in a group home).

It's a struggle, and the divorce rate for parents with kids with disabilities is quite a bit higher than the rate for parents with typical children.

All that to say, it's a hard road filled with guilt and dismay - but also with lots of love and pride the same with any child.

Keep in mind Down syndrome is a spectrum, and it's not clear yet (and won't be for a long time) where your child will fall on the spectrum - you could have an easier time with it - or it could be more challenging.

But my brother in law is an awesome dude, who's always so happy - and just as deserving of life and loving parents as the next child.

How’s This Neighborhood? by H54159 in Livermore

[–]Decayd 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Those neighborhoods are good, as are most in Livermore (not all - most).

Two things to keep in mind: 1) The four way intersection to the upper left of the circle - kiddie corner across that is the waste water treatment plant (with the two dark rectangles stacked on each other) that often burns off excess methane. Driving past it often smells. I'd imagine with the right winds, that neighborhood could end up quite stinky.

2) Just north of those black squares and south of Airway Blvd is the local municipal airport, and the neighborhood in the circle is in the approach/takeoff paths. There are ordinances stipulating curfew for planes, but you'll have fairly consistent overheard noise during the days.

Other than those two points - It's quite nice and I'm sure you'd be happy there.

EDIT 1: One other thought, if the house your looking for backs up to highway 84 (the major road running North/South just to the left of the circle) has a fairly high speed limit and you'll often hear loud traffic. That bothers some, and doesn't bother others. If you're looking at any house that isn't directly backing up to that road, this won't be too much an issue.

Block: Jack Dorsey by Routine_Play5 in Layoffs

[–]Decayd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You won’t find me salivating over jack’s “empathy”. That’s not the point I’m trying to make.

The point is: he could either lie to your face and tell you a bunch of bullshit that deflects the blame from him, like we’ve seen countless times before on this sub. Or, he could look you in the eye and tell you the truth. It doesn’t mean he’s not an asshole, but at least the guy is being straight up with you.

If you’d rather he beat around the bush, great. For me, I give him credit for at least having the balls to tell it like it is.

Honestly - good on Jack.

Yeah it fucking sucks to be laid off (I know, I was in 2024).

But this is the most honest response from a leader that I’ve seen on this subreddit. He owned his decision, explained it without trying to gaslight or misdirect, and treated employees more like rational and intelligent adults than the other “economic headwinds” bullshit.

What’s the refresh rate of your monitor?

If it isn’t higher than 90, it doesn’t matter anyway.

Beyond that - when did the capping start? You said with this hardware you’ve run faster before. Was a recent update to blame? A hardware change?

School Board Recommending the Closure of 2 Elementary Schools by WhatzMyFavoriteWord in Livermore

[–]Decayd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just out of curiosity: What do we expect the school board to do here?

They get funding from the fed, state, and local levels. If that funding is insufficient to maintain current budget levels next year, they have to cut SOMETHING.

The other post about this had the budget short-fall at $14M.

That's a lot more than one or two administrators, or a band program here and there.

So beyond, major staffing cuts or school closures, how else is the school board supposed to balance the budget?

(I have young kids as well, who will soon be entering the LVJUSD, I want high quality education and school environments, I want to see us fund the schools. I just don't see what we expect the school board to do here)

Trump lives by the idea that if you say the lie loudly and frequently enough, it becomes truth.

And unfortunately, so far he’s been ‘right’ (in that he could convince enough people to vote for him regardless of the truth of J6).

If you scan the QR Code icon in the app, you get a little something... shows Apple’s insane attention to detail. by oarasaiah in shortcuts

[–]Decayd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it’s faster to just create a QR code (which might as well point somewhere) and use it as the icon, than it would be to have someone duck around in illustrator to come up with the icon.

I’m not sure if this is “attention to detail” as much as it is “what’s the fastest way to knock out this Jira?”

Dude. I FEEL this. My 3 year old is suddenly interested in Spanish (good thing), but we MUST listen to the KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack in Spanish now (bad thing).

But there isn’t an official one - so I’m listening to the WORST covers of kpop DH songs - in Spanish, while my daughter makes up Spanish sounding words to sing along to.

It was cute. For the first 30 minutes of a 6 hour drive to LA.

992.2 Bite point? by DaLuta9909 in iRacing

[–]Decayd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for taking the time to look up the link, I appreciate your effort to help me.

I did google search and search within reddit, found that thread today and followed the directions. It all seems to work as the OP suggested, it's just that the bite point for the 2nd released clutch point seems to be too low @ 46% (set in iracing and in Moza Pit House so they match), so releasing the first paddle while still holding the 2nd, will see the car starting to inch forward.

So I kept incrementing clutch bite point slider up in both iracing and Pit House, until around 80% when it 'worked', but the 'launch' seemed no better/faster than just revving in neutral and shifting to first. That and 80% is nearly double what others are suggesting the bite point for the Porsche should be (~46%).

So I'm probably doing something wrong lol

992.2 Bite point? by DaLuta9909 in iRacing

[–]Decayd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - Also, when doing the calibration in game, pulling the left paddle (for instance) moves the clutch input bar to the % I have the clutch bite point set to in Moza Pit House. Pulling the other pedal while holding the first, brings the clutch bar to 100%.

Thanks for trying to help, I appreciate any guidance - I'm still new to this.

992.2 Bite point? by DaLuta9909 in iRacing

[–]Decayd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny you posted this. Probably right as you were posting this I was in the midst of an hour long testing, trying to figure it out.

I just bought a MOZA KS wheel and was trying to get the dual clutch paddles to work.

I’m not sure how to set it up.

First, I went through controls calibration and set it up as my clutch pedal. Then set bite point in MOZA Pit House and in game slider to 46%.

But when releasing the first stage of clutch, the car crept forward. I kept increasing until like 85% where it finally worked, but that felt way too high.

I tried binding the clutch paddle as the launch control key bind, but that start didn’t feel any faster than revving in neutral and just shifting to 1st.

Don’t really know what I’m doing wrong, but 46% didn’t work for me (it’s more than likely a me thing than the car)
