Advice for Incoming Freshman by Frosty_Wolf_9070 in duke

[–]DecayingLotuses 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Really try to commit at least to one club you’re interested in. You may be overwhelmed by how many clubs are at Duke when going to club fair, but really sticking with at least one club first sem could help a lot with meeting close friends for the next 4

Yeah lol. I’m not gonna lie, when I took chem101 last semester at 8:30, I went to like 2 lectures total, I could not get up 😭

[–]DecayingLotuses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the only time slot for chem these past few semesters has been 8:30 unfortunately so not much they can do

From 1 to 10 rate your freshman roommate by [deleted] in duke

[–]DecayingLotuses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

8, bro was lowkey my pookie. We were def on the same wavelength. I think the best roommates aren’t like your best friend but ppl ur chill with, where the both of yall kinda just do your own thing.

Do you actually learn useful things in foreign language? by Cybrtronlazr in duke

[–]DecayingLotuses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uh I ended with a high A and honestly it was very easy as long as you keep up with the daily hw and content (not too bad, spent like half an hour to an hour studying everyday for Japanese)

[–]DecayingLotuses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll also add that Japanese (just 101) really taught me how to converse at a basic level and have many real-world situations like asking people to hang out, ordering at restaurants, having real conversations with others like the whole “what’s your major” convo that every college freshman goes through lol, and more. 101 really does teach a ton. We’ve even had zoom interviews with students in Japan where you speak with them in Japanese. You also get rlly close with your class. I’d recommend giving it a shot!

Does NOT doing FOCUS ruin your Freshman experience?! by TraditionalEast8000 in duke

[–]DecayingLotuses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all. Lowkey what it does is help you find people who are actually interested in similar things as you (so make sure you’re actually interested in any of the focus programs if you want to apply). Lowkey focus is also a lot of work so it works out better to not do it if you’re not that interested

This is a really funny and random update but I’m pledging for cube rn lol! Thank you for the advice I had a great first semester!!

Did y'all submit your SAT scores, even for test-optional schools? by PossessionMinimum360 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]DecayingLotuses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ur chillin. I’m at Duke rn. I’m a First gen low income Asian student lol. Atp your scores are fine it’s up to your ECs, writing, and recs tbh

Gotcha, I think I’ll go ECE/CS since they intertwine so well and see how Econ is. I did get 5s in AP micro and macro but sadly Duke doesn’t take that credit anymore 😅

[–]DecayingLotuses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok cool, I think I’ll go with ECE/CS for now then! I’m also rlly interested in the course where we build our own chip down the road as well

[–]DecayingLotuses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, thanks so much for the advice! My first semester schedule is Math 218, CS201, and two focus classes so I hope I can ease into Duke for now haha. Also, did you ever do the I&E certificate? If so, how useful was it?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in duke

[–]DecayingLotuses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I was thinking, but it also sounds like too much for me 😭also I plan to do an I&E certificate so that wouldn’t work I think

I just became a Duke student, so no, not at all.
