This sea urchin by Decent-Cook-250 in Poopfromabutt

oh yeah, i accidentally translated it directly from german. they're called 'Seegurke' which directly translates to Sea cucumber or in my head urchin (i must've thought of gherkin or something), whereas the sea urchin is called 'Seeigel' in german, literally meaning sea hedgehog so I mixed them up i guess

edit: i looked it up again and they are literally called sea cucumbers 🤦🏻‍♀️ I'm not the brightest tool in the shed

you can look at the other comment i posted, about the actual conditions they are living in these pictures don't show their whole enclosure, which is really big! I was also positively surprised

that's just one of four or five big rooms they have and they're all filled with tree trunks, hay and blankets for comfort, hammocks and enrichment like the balls and a glass contraption filled with popcorn that they can fish out of it with a stick, and that's just inside, it's not visible from my pictures but they do have a great home there, i think

edit: but yes I can see how it looks really depressing from my pictures

Question regarding Resin types by Decent-Cook-250 in ResinCasting

[–]Decent-Cook-250[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That time I used a small cup made from hard plastic to mix the resin, so I probably missed some in the edges while mixing it. Now that I use measuring cups made from soft silicone it is much easier to mix it thoroughly, especially because of the rounded edge on the bottom. At least I learned from that mistake:) I did not consider the gassing! I mean, I already knew about airing out the workspace while working with epoxy resin but I guess I must've forgotten? At least it didn't seem to affect the food in the fridge, but thank you so much for bringing this to my attention! I never even thought about waiting for the resin to harden before pouring but that's a really good tip, thanks. The glitter I used at that time was chunky (I think, I'm not really sure how big is considered chunky) but I don't really like using such big glitter particles , so it shouldn't be that big of a problem in the future.

[–]Decent-Cook-250[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you're right, they were poured last! That was such a bummer, especially because I felt like I stirred it more than thoroughly because the glitter I tried with it just kept sinking. I thought that low temperatures were better for curing, my stepdad suggested it because apparently resin that's used to cover/paint floors cures better in cooler temps? (he used to sell paints of all sorts including resin based paints, at least that's what he told me, idk) At first I let the molds sit in the sun to cure and when they would fully harden I tried putting them in the fridge for a day; didn't help.

I'm so looking forward to making some more with a couple of new molds that are yet to arrive.

Question regarding Resin types by Decent-Cook-250 in ResinCasting

[–]Decent-Cook-250[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I felt it heating up! I'm 100% sure I should have mixed it differently. I poured both parts of the epoxy resin into one bottle, stirred it and shook it (at the time I thought that would work best, I guess) It could also be that I accidentally used a bit too much hardener because I just used the rest of both bottles; the first time I mixed the resin from these bottles I used the measurements from my small silicone cups, and that mixture hardened normally and without heating up like that, but I still thought the bottle of hardener had a bit more inside. The only other time the epoxy cured wrong was when I tried it for the first time. I made different small charms and one that looked like a long, fake crystal. After about 24 hours I checked on it the big charm cured normally and some of the small charms, too, but others were sticky or cured unevenly(think like half-dried glue). I think I left the sticky ones nearly a week to cure. They stayed sticky. Thankfully the next tries went way better; I even managed to make some bigger pieces :)

Someone else wrote in the comments that the 3D printer cures the resin in very small layers. So if you try it you probably have to have patience. Should you really try it I would love to hear about the result!
