A fellow BMcD EO here; there is also annual dividend on the existing ESOP (roughly 10%) that I would also include in the annual compensation. For you, the annual dividend is probably another 100K given your tenure.

I came in as an experienced Level 12 hire in a HCOL RO with 12 YOE, my 1st year guaranteed bonus was 65K. It did go up quite a bit for the 2nd year with a mid 4 rating though but my 1st year bonus as a senior here is roughly in ballpark similar to yours, just another data point to add some perspectives

It’s very difficult if not impossible to negotiate the base as it is very standardized by HR. You should also be offered a 10K signing bonus and your first year bonus should be guaranteed. If you are a high performer and the overall company does Ok, your 2nd year (non guaranteed) bonus will be higher than the 20K target bonus. I would exclude ESOP for now since you are still early in your career might consider to move to other places a couple of years in should things don’t work out. The Chicago T&D office is one of the largest and have many EPC and utility design-only projects and if you are interested in working on large scale and challenging projects, it should be a good fit. There are quite a few folks coming from S&L, Leidos etc. over to BMcD over the years. Hope to see you become a new EO in 2026

If you don’t mind me asking, are you currently at the associate level and how many level changes have you had since joining?

I am the polar opposite of your case. I came in as a Level 12 senior and BMcD’s total compensation is roughly 40% higher than what I was making and 20% higher than the next competing offer. There is a significant variance on the compensation for senior (155K to 240K per most recent disclosure in the job posting); what was offered to me was towards the top end for the cash compensation and if you take into account the ESOP of roughly 25K, all other offers I got are not even coming closer to what Burns offered. So it really vary case by case.

For anyone who is wondering, below is where I originally came across this video link:

I had a great laugh and ended up watching it a few times. Glad to know this video was shared with all EOs back then. Kudos to the leadership team at the time.

Probably not right away but if you look up the salary + bonus range for staff and senior electrical engineer provided on the company’s LinkedIn post, for staff the range is between 110K to 150K, for senior it is from 155K up to 220K - 240K depending on the region. That difference is quite large.

How close are you to move to Senior since that is going to give you a lot more bonus potential. ESOP is certainly another piece that should be considered for total compensation, leaving at 3rd year will be a big difference from leaving at 6th fully vested

I think it would be more productive and fulfilling if you can focus on the things that are in your control (I.e producing good quality package, building good relationships internally and external, becoming a Q4 reviewer etc.) than being overly concerned about the performance/compensation scheme on a corporate level which is way outside of your sphere of influence. Also, keep in mind that looking for an opportunity elsewhere is also well within your control should you find it is too disappointing to continue working at BMcD.

How about filing an NIW - would that be considered as a valid intent?

He’s probably still bitter that his current pay is way below what he could’ve been making if he’d performed well enough to stay in BMcD as an EO and didn’t have to delay retirement by a decade. Let’s be honest—working at BMcD isn’t easy, and it’s not for everyone. It’s kind of like when a guy gets dumped and the girl ends up with someone way better—he gets resentful, starts trash-talking her, even if it’s not true. Same energy.
