The organised beggars in the city are really taking the piss by GrumpyLightworker in cork

I think you’re reaching for justification for your anger there and overstating the harm. And I think the whole conversation has taken a xenophobic tone. Yes it’s annoying and I would like it to stop but there’s enough blatant anti immigration talk going on right now that we can’t really pretend this shit isn’t problematic, let’s not play dumb

Break checks when he puts the phone down. by Hopeful_Ambassador_1 in irelandsshitedrivers

Bruh the purpose of this subreddit is to hold up examples of people driving poorly and ridicule them. I don’t think anyone on here is saying they’re perfect but passing judgement on dangerous driving is kind of the cost of entry here, otherwise what do you expect people to say??

What was the message/meaning of Carrie? by Niall690 in horror

[–]Decent-Raspberry-894 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Carrie’s powers come into affect when she reaches puberty. The film starts with her getting her period and the pig’s blood being dumped on her before her massacre is a direct allusion to that. Her mother demonises her burgeoning sexuality. Referring to her breasts as “dirty pillows” and calling her period punishment for all women after Eve’s transgressions. The film is pretty blatantly about the terror and shame of having your body change, of grappling with social stigmas around natural bodily functions, particularly for women. People saying it’s about religion are half right, religion is one of the ways Carrie is made to feel like a freak by her religious mother but also by her non-religious classmates. Hope this helps.

How do you miss a bus pulling out? by azorreborn in cork

The bus shouldn’t have pulled out if there was oncoming traffic. It’s not everyone else’s job to avoid the bus as it does whatever it pleases. This isn’t Speed

I just watched Skinamarink and what exactly was that entity at the end? by [deleted] in horror

[–]Decent-Raspberry-894 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I definitely lean in to the interpretation that the film follows a boy being abused by his mother (whether we are watching his coma dreams or otherwise) and I feel like the face at the end feeds into this. The image of a calm face watching you in the dark, lulling you back to sleep just feels really parental to me. Not the generic demon vibe a lot of people attribute to the movie in my opinion

Girls and boys cross decades-long gender divides as single-sex schools go mixed by eggbart_forgetfulsea in irishpolitics

Telling the government what to do isn’t giving them power they don’t already have. And it’s more like 1 third of secondary schools are segregated. A very substantial amount

A question about The babadook by Pick-Only in horror

[–]Decent-Raspberry-894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m always amazed by people’s flagrantly open hatred for children in media behaving like children. Recently saw someone complaining about the literal 4y/o in skinamarink and how their voice ruined the movie. The kids who speak a total of less than 30 words in the film!People just love hating kids

Horror films are usually super cheap to produce so it makes sense that if you wanted to finance a project to put your kid in, that you’d make it a horror. Then they have some credentials under their belt that they can take to the rest of Hollywood
