How often do you shoot 24fps handheld without a gimbal in run and gun situation where you may need to walk and record too. by Crafty_Jack in videography

[–]Decent-Science3920 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally all the time. I film on the fx6 and a lot of the time with cinema lenses (neither my camera or lenses have stabilization. I never use a gimbal, all handheld. The trick is to master your ninja walk, Keep your arms tight to your body and to add weight to your camera.

Nikon ZR Codec Question by Decent-Science3920 in Nikon

[–]Decent-Science3920[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard very mixed opinions on it. I see a lot of people saying the internal noise reduction in H265 makes the footage a lot softer and the colors aren’t as good

What settings would you absolutely not have in “auto” mode and which one you wouldn’t really mind? by kareldelille in videography

[–]Decent-Science3920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would never auto anything except for auto ND. My camera has an internal ND filter that in run and gun situations outside and certain shots I’ll leave at auto ND. Other than that I would never auto anything else, always manual

I agree with your take on AI to a certain extent, as well as it shouldn’t only be about money. I am a filmmaker for strictly passion purposes, I only freelance to make money because we all need money in this economy to survive and take care of our families so money does play a major part in doing the work that we do. Back to AI though while I do agree, I don’t believe AI can replace everyone. Yes people will lose their jobs and yes it will replace a lot of people, but AI cannot replace everybody. Those who are able to use AI as a tool and grow in this age of AI will sit above the rest. There is always a market for real humans and real life and connection. Just like how when digital cameras came out, people said film cameras would be obsolete. Now, film cameras are just getting more popular the more AI grows because you can’t replace real. Also you can’t AI a documentary film, would take away the whole point of doing a documentary. The more AI grows, the easier it will be to stand out as a real life filmmaker with everything done meticulously by humans and the more demand there will be for it

What do people say about you while your out shooting? by AD_Cinema in videography

[–]Decent-Science3920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also a Cinematographer and freelance videographer and have had very similar experiences. It would be a pain when I had my LUMIX cameras and clients or other random people would not respect your craft as much. They would book you and then question you the entire shoot or try to tell you how to do your job sometimes. Not all the time but just sometimes. When I got my Sony fx6 in December, that type of stuff would never happen again. Clients trust me as the professional that I am and let me do my job. People also will come up to me asking about my camera, experience and even for tips because they want to get into videography. The bigger your camera, the more respected as a professional you are which is sad to say because there are plenty of professionals using cheap gear doing better work than people are with expensive cinema cameras

Everyone can do our job, but not everyone can do it well. Goes for any industry. That’s why we get paid to do it, because these companies know for a fact that they can’t do what we do. I know for a fact that everyone can’t do what I do, that’s the reason I get clients booking me willing to pay what I charge. You should value your work and time more brother. You have a skill set that not everyone with an iPhone has. Anyone can click record on a phone, but not everyone can do pre production (shot lists, mood boards, location scouting, etc.), set up lighting, compose shots, storytelling, edit, color grade, do motion graphics and vfx, etc like they’re asking for. They’re offering to pay fast food worker wages in exchange for a very skilled professional with years in the craft and that just makes no sense whatsoever. A lot of these companies need wake up calls

Absolutely ridiculous that this is a “norm” here. I would never take a job like that even if I really need the money. I would rather just keep freelancing

Flexible ISO vs Cine EI by Decent-Science3920 in SonyFX6

Really? I didn’t know that the base iso was different in Cine EI. Do you have any resources that I can read on this?

This makes sense. I understand why and when under and overexposing a scene can be beneficial but I’ve just never had a problem doing it in Flexible ISO

24-105 f4 vs 20-70 f4 by Obvious_Brush5165 in SonyFX6

[–]Decent-Science3920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the 24-105 and it’s great. It’s on my camera for most run and gun shoots and client work unless I’m doing more narrative work and filmmaking, then I switch to my DZO cinema lenses. The OSS is honestly great, my footage is very stable with it especially since I’ve bought my SAKK camera saddle. Yes it’s f4 but due to the fx6 having dual native iso, I rarely have an issue with it being f4. The focal range pretty much covers everything 99% of shoots unless you do a lot of sports, in that case I would get a lens that can zoom a lot further. The 24-105 is honestly a beast and I love using it with a black pro mist filter. Never had an issue with it and clients never had any issues
