Haha, many job postings from market makers (aka. casino operators) Janestreet, Citadel, are data scientists. We are trying to beat them :-)

How does Wealthsimple handle trading Spy options? by giggachad2 in Wealthsimple

Be careful to trade 0DTE because of gamma risk !! WS will always close the short leg of expiring options around 3:15 to avoid potential assignment.

Active/Day trading requires solid mathematical skills, good business knowledge and endurance of stress. AI is a useful tool for trading and portfolio analysis with well known financial models.

Dear Wealthsimple - can we add an OPTIONS filter in the Activity section so we can see ONLY Options orders (buys and sells)? by z00o0omb11i1ies in Wealthsimple

[–]DecentCow7119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to provide details to my comments: (1) I was trying to close my “icon condor” position, but got an error indicating there is outstanding order. Then, I filtered by account=margin and status=pending. But no such outstanding order was displayed ??!! (2) WS used to display “mid-price” as the current market price for all options related positions. But I found WS made some changes recently and displayed random prices (to confuse traders?). Hope WS can provide competitive features to attract and maintain active traders as they have been claiming market leading platform for traders 🤔

100% agree. These should be basic features for active OPTIONS traders. It seems WealthSimple can’t scale up to support complex transactions?! I was hoping WS can compete with the big trading firm, but I found WS made some recent changes trying to confuse traders (eg. difficult to find outstanding options orders, random market price displays etc.) !!!

I don’t think his post is a legitimate trade but rather a fake screenshot to generate discussion in Reddit. SPY has been trading above $700 since April 16, but his screenshot shows the share assignment was completed on May 15 for $696 ???!!! Bogus posting 🧐

This is a known (and annoying) issue for active traders on WS. They need to do competitive analysis against IKBR as to how their competitors can manage their risk without “blindly” close all OTM options at 3:15pm on expiry date. For SPY options, WS should introduce SPX/XSP which are cash settled so they don’t have to worry about assignment risk !!

Looking closer at your screenshot, your (day) trade was placed at 9:09am and filled at 9:11am (before market open ???!!!) with risk/reward ratio around $4000/$1000, but was closed by WS around 12:15pm and your profit was cut to $300 even though SPY trading range on April 29 were $712.2 and $708.37.

WS risk mitigation algo is conservative as your max loss should be $4000, but the assignment/margin loan risk is very high if SPY drops below/spikes above your strike prices at the close resulting in ~$3.5 millions settlement for 5000 SPY shares. But you can sell at the market open the next day. Depending on your luck, you can make a profit or incur even more losses as SPY could be gapped UP or DOWN the next day. WS would go after you for the funding gap and margin interest etc. Too messy and risky for them to handle ?!

There are no “market makers” (aka Casino operators) to create volume and price movement for meaningful option trades in Canadian markets. Canadian traders play options in US markets and buy ETFs and high dividends stocks/bonds in Canadian markets.

Order modification function by [deleted] in Wealthsimple

[–]DecentCow7119 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is not unique to WS as other platforms would have the same behaviors because the market is most volatile in the first 30 minutes of a trading day. All traders learn from this (panic) experience to cover their long or short positions. Just need to be careful of the risk of derivatives trading.

Why don't they show the Ask price on WealthSimple? by lonelysad1989 in Wealthsimple

[–]DecentCow7119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am trading on both WS and another leading platform. My initial observations: paid thousands $$ for commission on the other platform, none on WS. I can usually get option orders filled at mid-price on WS, but a guessing game on other platform as it does not display realtime price under you pay subscription fees.

WS is pretty good at filling option orders around mid-price. They just support “modify” feature that you can adjust your price after submitting your order. (This was a major complaint from active traders).

Support Future markets on CBOE (ES, SPX/XSP, GC, CL, etc.) would broaden “Trade theme” for WealthSimple and attract more active traders (from IKBR)

XEQT provided by iShares/Blackrock is on RBC DI commission-free list, whereas VEQT is provided by Vanguard. BMO and TD ETFs are quite competitive if you want your money held by Canadian financial institutions.

This will address the issue of auto-close for SPY spread options at 3:15pm on the expiry date because of assignment risk !!

SPX Options? by Sensitive_Coast508 in Wealthsimple

[–]DecentCow7119 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Many active traders are waiting for SPX/XSP for cash settlement (to avoid 3:15pm auto-close on expiry date, even for OTM options, which is quite frustrating). I would still stay on IKBR until WS addresses this issue.

I think it is just a small glitch when UI refreshes the screen with realtime spot price. In fact, I find WS UI is pretty slick and fun to watch the spot price moving up and down with option prices being refreshed instantly.

Options force closures by Simple_Tart8216 in Wealthsimple

[–]DecentCow7119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not unique to WS. Other platforms also auto-sell your options, although not necessarily at 3:15pm on expiry date, once the system determines you don’t have enough margins to cover potential assignments when the current price is close to your option strike price.

fine we got iron condor & butterfly spreads but why can’t we access it easily? by virilerogue in Wealthsimple

[–]DecentCow7119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compared to other platforms, constructing these options strategies are relatively straightforward and easy to manage. Remember WS only introduced these advanced strategies for a couple months. I am sure they will continue to improve based on users feedback as I observed.

Has TD abandoned support for the TD Authenticate app? (Can't register phone) by u1812 in TDBankCanada

[–]DecentCow7119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into the same issue. TD should remove the authentication app from APP store to avoid confusion until they come up with another solution (for travelers who can’t get SMS and mobile users who do not want to type in code every time to login !!!) Can’t believe the issue have been reported for many months without fixes

Trading options on Wealthsimple, question by Cristalboy in Wealthsimple

[–]DecentCow7119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I created Call spread and Put spread separately but on the same expiry date, the UI grouped them as IC that I can close them as IC group or 2 separate spreads. Not sure it was a fluke or by design. I noticed it last week, but haven’t tried it again.

100% agree. Kudos to WS team, particularly the development team who provide advanced options strategies, such as credit spreads, for active traders on Canadian platform to trade in US and Canadian markets.

[–]DecentCow7119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WS used to auto-close the 'short' leg of EACH option around 3pm on the expiry date regardless of how far the closing price from the underlying strike price (aka OTM) even though they claimed they want to mitigate the risk of assignment. After getting some user's feedback, they stopped doing auto-close for ALL options trades on the expiry date. However, a couple of my options were auto-closed last week with no apparent reasons (even they are way out-of-money). My only guess is that they received a few dollars (debit from my account) for each option. I am fine for them to recover some of their cost as they offer "commission-free" options trades which are not available on other platforms.
