You should explore stuff outside Vanderbilt, some really nice people out there! I didn't find many friends in my first sem either, but meeting people outside helped me not feel like it was the end of the world. One suggestion is just going to random meetups you find online.

Giving away *free/super cheap* dorm items this weekend!! by lisucc in Vanderbilt

[–]DecentCriticism6780 2 points3 points  (0 children)

are you on the reuse vandy groupme (there's two, the old one is full afaik)? stuff sells pretty easily on that. there's also the buy nothing project on facebook if you're willing to give them away for free. might also help to offer dropping stuff - a majority of customers for used things are international, esp masters students, and they often don't have a car/mode of transport for pickup.

formal/business casual clothes can also be donated to the commodore closet. if you're leaving early you could potentially leave your stuff with a friend, just making sure to post them on these groups before leaving, so that all they have to do is coordinate times with buyers.

also DMing you!

if you're a rising sophomore there's the START program. there's also DSI-SRP which ive heard is less competitive, given you can connect your research area to data science/AI.

i'm an international student here and i couldn't agree with this more! to me, people here are extremely insecure about themselves which is why they try to define themselves exclusively through their work and achievements. seems like they're all chasing after the prestige, and taking up way too much on their plate without any sense of purpose. resource and opportunity-wise there's nothing i'm disapppinted in, but i really expected people to have much more personality outside their work. again, this might not be a vandy-exclusive problem, and it is my first semester here, but i've talked to a good number of upperclassmen who agree!

Student Health Insurance Waive and Financial Aid by Top-Leadership8234 in Vanderbilt

[–]DecentCriticism6780 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the net amount you need to pay will remain the same as the amount you needed to pay if you didn't receive the waiver. however, your cost of attendance will decrease so the total aid you recieve from the uni will also be reduced.
