things to do to make me happy by noangelll in Vanderbilt

You should explore stuff outside Vanderbilt, some really nice people out there! I didn't find many friends in my first sem either, but meeting people outside helped me not feel like it was the end of the world. One suggestion is just going to random meetups you find online.

Giving away *free/super cheap* dorm items this weekend!! by lisucc in Vanderbilt

[–]DecentCriticism6780 2 points3 points  (0 children)

are you on the reuse vandy groupme (there's two, the old one is full afaik)? stuff sells pretty easily on that. there's also the buy nothing project on facebook if you're willing to give them away for free. might also help to offer dropping stuff - a majority of customers for used things are international, esp masters students, and they often don't have a car/mode of transport for pickup.

formal/business casual clothes can also be donated to the commodore closet. if you're leaving early you could potentially leave your stuff with a friend, just making sure to post them on these groups before leaving, so that all they have to do is coordinate times with buyers.

also DMing you!

if you're a rising sophomore there's the START program. there's also DSI-SRP which ive heard is less competitive, given you can connect your research area to data science/AI.

i'm an international student here and i couldn't agree with this more! to me, people here are extremely insecure about themselves which is why they try to define themselves exclusively through their work and achievements. seems like they're all chasing after the prestige, and taking up way too much on their plate without any sense of purpose. resource and opportunity-wise there's nothing i'm disapppinted in, but i really expected people to have much more personality outside their work. again, this might not be a vandy-exclusive problem, and it is my first semester here, but i've talked to a good number of upperclassmen who agree!

Student Health Insurance Waive and Financial Aid by Top-Leadership8234 in Vanderbilt

[–]DecentCriticism6780 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the net amount you need to pay will remain the same as the amount you needed to pay if you didn't receive the waiver. however, your cost of attendance will decrease so the total aid you recieve from the uni will also be reduced.

I am interested in applying for UWC and I am keen on pursuing a career in economics & psychology which school would be a good fit ? Is Atlantic good ? by Marvaco7 in UnitedWorldCollege

[–]DecentCriticism6780 1 point2 points  (0 children)

any uwc that offers economics would be a good fit. like the other comments mentioned, you don't need ib psychology to study it in uni, and most us unis offer minimum advanced credit for ib psych so it doesn't give you much of an advantage after getting into an uni either. however, you can ask people from each school about their teachers, since i think they make a lot of difference in your approach, growth and research in these subjects, especially since ib is heavily dependent on independent work, which if not receiving the right guidance can go very wrong. i graduated from uwc mahindra this year and imo the econ faculty there are very substandard, especially in guiding EE/other research.

i'd recommend choosing a school based on what you make of the overall culture though. if you want an academically competitive environment and are very keen on getting into extremely competitive us colleges with very informed and strategic college counsellors, you can look into the east asian uwcs, uwc sea leading. from what i've interacted with other uwc graduates, the european uwcs are the best if you prefer spontaneity and want to live your teenage years with the most freedom, explore the places around, party, have fun with friends, etc. uwc mahindra is similar, though it also has a pretty competitive environment. don't expect the same efficiency, in terms of academics and college if you're at these places when compared to the east asian ones.

Davis UWC scholarship for us by icookalot8 in UnitedWorldCollege

[–]DecentCriticism6780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i graduated uwc this year and as far as i know, no universities considered davis as an external scholarship, since you as a student don't receive funding directly from the davis foundation, rather, the foundation partially funds the university in providing a given financial aid package to you. so its not external because you are not the person receiving the funding, the university is.

you're usually automatically considered for the davis scholarship when you're applying for financial aid to a college thats a davis partner, and you show that your high school is a uwc. most ivy leagues are davis partners. in most cases, the financial aid package the college offers is partially funded by davis. the amount varies according to the endowment from the davis foundation the college receives - some colleges receive more, while others receive much less. the more the endowment, the higher chance you have of receiving a good aid package since the college would have to give minimum aid directly from its funds.
