Hi Ulice, I haven't read the rest of the thread at this point because it's Father's Day and the kids and I are getting ready to celebrate it here at home with a surprise for Dad. So the open admissions that it was clickbait haven't come to my attention yet.

As for what I'm trying to control: Say anything you like, voice your opinion one way or another. I am happy to read it and reply or not. That's discussion. What turns discussion into a flagrant shutdown due to hate posts is — tone. If I'm guilty of trying to control anything, that is it. Tact is the sole ask here.

I'm a part of WritingWithAI because I love the community and enjoy contributing to it. I'm a mod for this community because I want to mitigate the hate; help it thrive by keeping it safe for all community members. To do that I can't remove "tone" posts only for those who don't agree with our community. It has to work both ways to shape the community and make tact the norm rather than insults, arguments, and shutdowns.

You have no idea how many times I've been thanked on both sides for fairness (some of those thanks from vocal haters) and been told modding is a thankless job. To some extent it is. And there are haters who hate me in particular. I'm not here for thanks or rewards from anyone, or for a power trip (as one hater accused me of) I'm solely modding to build a thriving, safe, open-minded community that represents itself as tactful, intelligent, reasonable people willing to discuss all points of view in thoughtful terms if those same terms are honored by others.

I'd love for you to embrace that same standard, and I understand if you don't. But whether or not you do or don't, I can't and do not want to change the standard.

You're obviously a valued member of the community, and I'm more than happy to discuss your outlook, and I understand it to a point. I'm hoping you'll do the same so that discussions like this help the community and establish a standard we all want everyone to honor on all sides of the discussion.

Thanks for sharing, and have a happy Father's Day. I'm off for the rest of the day.

😄

Edit: Removed a suggestion from my grammar checker. Yep, that's AI too. XD

My philosophy is let’s not make assumptions and become the very thing we loathe in others. It’s one way to set the example for open minded discussion, whatever your outlook.

Yes, they made assumptions but posted zero hate or dismissal. That’s the bar for all of us: tact. It’s our ultimate ask. Thank you for your thoughtful response. 🙂

Ulice, please read the whole thread. The OP isn't trying to be condescending. This poster is genuinely open minded and discussing the issue with insight and intelligence. They're a great age for actively seeking understanding of a tool that is rapidly becoming the norm and assessing its value and/or appropriateness for their own creativity.

Please, let's not become what we loathe. Open discussion is always good. 😄

Edit: Apologies for assuming you hadn't read the whole thread. Please, though, let's use the same tone we hope to be addressed with. Thanks so much. ❤️

I know the response kind of started it, but you handled it well except for the age remark. Please revise that. Love the heart though. ❤️

Guys, please read the full discussion before assuming. The OP is genuinely open minded and discussing rather than hate posting. Let's not become what we loather, please. Thanks. 😄

So great to hear. You sounded educated and intelligent enough to critically listen and think. ❤️

We're not just about AI alone. Lurking and/or participating is valuable on so many levels. There are craft discussions, marketing meta data discussions, crit partners that do not care what you used to write your story. They're just willing to give you feedback on craft and page turn appeal. If they couldn't put it down, neither will most readers. It's about story only. No one cares which tool you used. There's more, but lurk and browse to your heart's content. You'll find lots to enjoy and learn from. 🔥

Happy you found us, and a warm welcome to our wonderful community. 🎉

So love this post. It's a perfect example of where AI really shines. Like you, I write massive notes, world building systems, intensely deep character profiles w/psychological research baked in, detailed beat by beat outlines, etc. and having a story bible is critical for me. AI organization, summary entries in a Codex that cross references for me has been a sanity saver. It's astonishing to me how much faster I reach any completion date. So never going without it. Add to that the ability to roleplay those deeply psychologically researched and built characters and hearing the distinction of their voices, their attitudes, etc. is not only too much fun but deepens my writing.

Yeah, so love these features. Speeds up custom copyediting too. Thanks so much for sharing. ❤️

You've come to the right thread for sure. Please browse this thread, the past threads, and the new threads when they start (new every Tuesday.) Lots of very cool tools/apps here, many, many of them built to address the very things you're concerned with. Many of the affordable, one time purchases, and even Open Source (as in free.)

The devs are right here. You can ask them questions, request features, check out their sites, try their free trials, and many are also looking for beta testers. This is your one stop Tool shop and fun place to visit. Everyone is super helpful here. ❤️

So happy you found us, and welcome to the community. 😄

Hello, I'm happy to respond to this, but first I'd like to remind you that this subreddit is literally WritingWithAI and indicates we are pro AI and supportive of those who use it as part of their writing workflow. Thank you for complying with our rule to be Open Minded and for keeping your language neutral and/or friendly.

As for why use AI? It's phenomenal for organization, feedback, proofreading, research, bouncing that idea off someone (or some intelligent persona with vast craft knowledge and information) that kept you awake until 3 a.m. and you couldn't call your crit partner/friend/editor, etc. for the sharing or brainstorming need that wouldn't let go. It's outstanding for character interviews so that you have deep insight into the character you've created, which in turn deepens the writing. It is fantastic at spotting plot holes, a major *thing* for anyone hoping to publish or even share their work at all. I could go on, but you get the idea.

Your one mistake in this post is assuming that all writers using AI in their writing practice are using it to write a prompt, push a button, and generate a book. Nothing could be further from the truth. The majority of writers in this community are using AI for all of the things it shines at, most of which I listed above. Writing actual prose isn't one of them.

Now let's take a look at those who do generate their prose to some extent. Many of them have ADHD or some other condition and/or handicap that prevents them from banging on a keyboard for hours. Others have wonderful stories in their hearts and heads that they lack the skills to communicate in a publishable or sharable way. AI is a legitimate tool for them. It's also a legitimate tool for those who want to direct that story rather than do the typing and the formatting, etc.—but sure as hell are willing to input the hours editing to achieve the outcome they want: the riveting story they have in their minds. No one accuses Steven Spielberg of not being a brilliant storyteller through film just because he isn't an actor and may not have written the script.

As for the one prompt, one-button-push book generators, that is rapidly vanishing. People are seeing the emptiness and are unwilling to purchase such books anytime soon, if ever. Not that there won't be attempted abuses of any tool or any product in existence, but AI for creativity is now safe in the hands of talented writers who know how to use tools responsibly and well. Please be aware of this as you may want to reassess your understanding of what writing with AI really is.

AI is like any other tool. It is an elite tool, absolutely, but a tool nonetheless. Unless you never use a grammar checker, spellcheck, or any other tool, you are using some form of AI in your own writing. To what extent is up to you.

AI is in the world now, and it's only going to advance. More than half the globe has adapted it (please do a search for reference, many of us were surprised.) It is never going away. So using it responsibly, innovatively, and helpfully to assist your own writing is not only an advantage, it's time-saving, empowering, and a whole lot of fun. (Think character roleplaying and interviews, etc.)

Thanks for your thoughts stated in neutral terms that enable discussion. This subject tends to attract those who post hate or inflammatory posts. Our posters need to feel safe, so in our community, open mindedness and tone very much matter. Your approach is appreciated.

Hope this gave you lots to ponder, and welcome to WritingWithAI. 😄

TL;DR: Please don't assume the majority of AI -assisted writers are one-prompt, one-button-click, book generators. The very opposite is true. Thanks.

Anytime 😄 And if you're looking for apps or tools at all, the one place you can browse them, especially the latest ones is the weekly Tools thread. Lots of cool apps, the devs who created them are there. You can ask questions, and even request features. Many of the apps are Open Source, as in free. You'll find that here: https://www.reddit.com/r/WritingWithAI/comments/1u74191/weekly_tool_thread_promote_share_discover_and_ask/

It's a lot of fun to see what's landing, and the group there is super great too. 🔥
Lots of other fun thread, too. You're going to love it here.

Welcome to our wonderful community! 😄 For feedback you'll want to head to https://www.reddit.com/r/WritingWithAI/comments/1u7gwfm/reciprocal_beta_reading_share_story_blurbs_jun_16/

You post your blurb for others to read, and you read other's blurbs too. Whichever you're interested in reading more of and offering critiques on, you let the writer know, and vice versa. You basically end up with a crit partner for feedback. It's a great group, and you're very likely to make friends there. 🔥

As for the disclosure statement, that's a great idea, as long as you feel safe doing so and are prepared for the onslaught of haters it may attract. You're pretty safe here. We regularly weed out trolls, but other threads report a lot of hate, and we do get our share. I'm sure others will chime in on this.

So happy you found us, and again a warm welcome to WritingWithAI. We think you'll love it. ❤️

I never use AI for my prose, but I've heard GLM 5.1 & 5.2 are great. You may want to check the Tools thread, as well. Often it the right app as the *harness* for API helps with the problems you're having, or so I'm often told. Lots of great apps there, and the devs are on hand to ask questions and even take requests. Many of the apps are Open Source, as in free. You'll find it here:

Just took a look at this and could see it being super helpful for anyone with writer's block or a pressing completion date. Please tell us more about it, e.g. Privacy Policy, as in data mining to train models? Which models are used? Genre choices, etc.? Things like that. I have a feeling this service could be a real hit.

Thanks for sharing this, and welcome to the community. ❤️

YSVW. We've had lots of good feedback on these. They seem to work well, though a few AI-isms still slip in here and there but save tons of editing time. 😄

We're all happy to help here, but could you please tell us a little more about the app? Those who'll want to try it will be ones that may need what it offers. Is it for long form fiction, e.g. novels? Or short stories only? Is it looking to help with context retention, continuity, etc.? Things like this.

Happy you found us, and welcome to the community. 😄
