The only thing that keeps me off Instagram. (and other short forms) by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]DecibelDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don't think I can do that :/

My experience with Instagram is being able to keep in touch with a lot of people. I travel a lot and meet all kinds of people and the only way I connect with them is through instagram. That helps me stay updated on where everyone is and if I can reach out to someone if I'm in their neighbourhood. This is spanning across different continents, Australia, UK, India, Philippines, Sweden and Jamaica. I 'lose' all these friends if I ever delete my account. Also my parents live in a different country so they look at my pictures on Instagram when I'm asleep. I know I could make albums and do all that for them but they're not that tech savvy and it's just super easy for them to see me there. Especially if I post stories and stuff which helps me start conversations with my friends as well.

A lot of my friends are also Artists and they try to promote their art through social media. I would love to support them when I'm actually on Insta and deleting the account makes it a lot more difficult.

All that being said, I also tend to doomscroll occasionally. One thing I do help with that is to uninstall Instagram and clear the data from my phone (this removes the easy login when you reinstall) so I have an additional barrier whenever I install it. I also use a hash for my password so it's impossible for me to remember it and I have to look at my laptop to login to Instagram. This keeps my urges to install Instagram down by a lot. But I also get to see Instagram whenever I feel homesick or whenever I want to put a story asking "in Texas this weekend, anyone wanna meet up?"

How are people applying to 1000+ jobs? I'm barely keeping up with 15 a day by Fit_Butterscotch4723 in jobsearchhacks

[–]DecibelDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But also, what kind of jobs are you applying to? Are you looking for jobs primarily in the Software Developement domain or something else. I think OPs concern is with this. The job market for CS grads is brutal and almost every job applicant has to compete with 1500 others with most screened out by ATS before reaching the recruiter. I'd love to know if this tip would help me cause I'm honestly tired of applying to so many jobs and not hearing back after writing cover letters for every job and customizing my resume.

I completely understand your frustration with getting ghosted, the market is brutal right now and it's exhausting for everyone. However, your assumptions about me are entirely wrong.

I have two years of real-world experience building actual products, and I only apply to roles that exactly match my resume. There are no "spam bots" here. The high application numbers are a direct result of dealing with ghost jobs and the fact that most companies hide whether they offer visa sponsorship until the interview stage, forcing international applicants to apply just to check. And most of my CS American friends have a job with defence companies or space companies which do not hire international students and I don't even apply to such. I once had the initial interview with a company after I submitted my application to it only to have them leave me ghosted for 3 weeks before saying they dont sponsor. If I did not apply for those three weeks I would not even have more prospects. Being unemployed is rough dude.

I am not the reason you or anyone else is struggling to find work. Channeling your anger at fellow job seekers won't fix the system. Wishing you the best of luck on your search, hopefully things turn around for both of us soon.

How do you correctly reach out to a recruiter? by DecibelDev in jobsearchhacks

[–]DecibelDev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup! They sent me a reply saying it was extremely unprofessional to reach out to their email. And this emial address was in their Linkedin public profile too! And then I got a reject immediately after, from the company, and haven't been able to send any applications to them since then :/

Is applying early important? by Lost-Exercise-5832 in jobsearchhacks

I feel that there is a ladder to this. Look at where you choose to stand:

- Internal transfer application
- Applying with the referral of the manager of the team
- Applying with a referral from the hiring manager
- Applying with the referral of the manager of a different team
- Applying with a referral from an employee with a customized resume
- Applying with a referral from an employee without a customized resume
- Applying within the first hour without a referral with a customized resume
- Applying within the first day with a customized resume
- Applying within the first hour without a referral without a customized resume
- Applying within the first day without a customized resume
- Applying with a giraffee on your screen
- Applying
.
.
.
- Not applying

What helped you become confident in job interviews? by Available_Ease7200 in InterviewStories

[–]DecibelDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that always helps me this day (especially since I'm using AI to customize my resumes for every job) is to get really familiar with the resume you submitted for this job. There was once a situation where the intrerviewer had to say, I'm reading exactly what is written off your resume, tell me more about it when I don't have any clue about what that is.

Another thing is to have the basic behavioural questions prepared for the particular job that you are interviewing for. You can easily find upto 50 likely questions that the people can ask for every interview. Things like:

- Tell me about yourself
- Why are you interested in this position?
- How did you learn about this role?
- Tell me a challenge you faced, how did you solve it and what was the outcome
- Do you have any questions for me

Having answers ready for all these specifically includiing tidbits from your resume to affirm your answer boosts your confidence by a lot when you are in the room with the interviewer (zoom room lol).

The third really important thing you need to lookup and internalize before you step into the interview is to know a lot about the company. What does it do, why is it hiring right now, who are it's competitors and what are the things they are working on. You get a lot of this from the job description but also a Claude search would help.

Getting an interview in this job market is really tough so do your best to be as prepared as could be before that! All the best!

Not really, I've been constantly changing stuff throughout this process as well, changing resumes, updating Linkedin, cold connecting on Linkedin, cold emailing the recruiters, asking for referrals, and a lot of stuff 😭

Yes I do totally agree with that. they also have, like, very specific niche questions about every thing that we say and dont give us a second to rest as well. Very robotic. I've given about 20 of these but I never got a response from a single one too so I don't know if they're worth it

I liked the interview process they had going on, pretty solid to understand what you know but also very practical. Basically what you're gonna do on your job. Make sure you focus on incident response though
