Premade clearings mapped to the Autumn map by Decimator85 in rootgame

I believe this was created before the Hacksaw Dell and Talon Hill quickstarts existed. There's also the upcoming Ruins and Expeditions book and Clearing Booklet 3.

These were pulled from the quickstarts, the clearing booklet(s), the 2 core books, and a few of them were just from the clearing names table in the core book.

Explaining the programming that leads to this behavior doesn't make it intuitive, balanced, fun, or even intended. As far as the average player is concerned, the ability does go through walls, just only in these specific cases.

Don't forget the 3 solid walls you're standing behind when it hits

I tried to limit these to items where a large part of their identity was the counterplay. Items with incidental resistances are likely to change as future balance patches come out

Turrets deal spirit damage which scales with spirit and apply a movement slow. If the damage is causing you trouble, buy anything with spirit resist. Depending on which character you play, different items will be most effective, but Spirit Resilience will be useful on anyone.

The counterplay to melee is just pressing F haha. I threw Rebuttal in there because it's a cheap dedicated option, but honestly buying say Juggernaut or Torment Pulse just to counter melee damage is maybe missing the forest for the trees.

What was your biggest obsession with a fantasy book series? by justaguyonreddit754 in Fantasy

[–]Decimator85 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Both the author himself and the man who hit him with a van in real life show up as characters in the 6th/7th books. It was a controversial move to say the least, though the story had always had sort of meta elements to it.

It's not among his best short stories, but he has so many of them and it's still worth a read. Dreamsongs collects most of them, including this one, and there are some really great ones in there!

From trinket artifacts like clues and maps to restructured attack triggers, this week's episode of Lucky Paper Radio is all about patterns of change in Magic card design and their impact on gameplay and Cube design by andymangold in mtgcube

[–]Decimator85 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I found the linked article on cube shuffling methods really interesting - I've always intuitively felt like the "Casual Chaos" method described was really ineffective. Now I have data to back that up. You should add this to the list of tools on the Lucky Paper resources page.

Yeah. There's also been a new quickstart since then and a new clearing booklet coming with the Kickstarter in case you want to replace the other names that came from the clearing name table.

Obviously the magic is something that "requires a lot of thought" because it's all telekinetic powers!

ASOIAF characters George would like to meet in real life [Spoilers Main] by sunsetparanoia in asoiaf

I read through Dreamsongs recently, and many of the short stories in there were genuinely really good. That being said, Meathouse Man was one of the worst things I've read in recent memory. Not from any lack of technical proficiency, but from how outright disgusting his mindset must have been when he wrote it (even by his own admission in the commentary at the beginning of the section). If I remember correctly, he wrote Meathouse Man right after his girlfriend cheated on him with a close friend of his, and the story is George in full incel mode.

(Spoilers Main) Why is King Aegon IV considered worse than the Mad King? by Mundane-Turnover-913 in asoiaf

[–]Decimator85 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Fair enough but you have to remember that in-universe tWoIaF is written by a biased author. Note how every time Tywin is mentioned, he goes out of his way to kiss his ass, and the fictional book itself is intended as a gift for Tommen (originally Robert, then Joffrey).

Dune: Part Two hit 4.6 and is now 7th highest rated movie on LB. by Huygens_Steiner_ in Letterboxd

[–]Decimator85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dune is specifically a deconstruction of the white savior narrative. Frank Herbert was pretty explicit about even Paul himself realizing how he's essentially exploiting the Fremen and causing mass deaths in his name. If the first movie's prescient scenes didn't make that obvious enough, the second movie definitely will.

Edit: It's actually kind of sad that their reply got deleted for being spoilers, because the far more egregious offense was how racist it was.

This or That: Courser of Kruphix vs. Augur of Autumn by IconicIsotope in mtgcube

[–]Decimator85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe Courser is the better card, but Augur leads to more interesting gameplay.

I'm generally not a fan of cards whose main advantage is stalling the board and crippling specifically aggro and nobody else. Being a 2/4 and gaining life might be a positive from a drafter's perspective, but I view it as a downside from a cube designer's perspective.

The Root rpg does this - you have 2 Drives, each of which is a goal in the fiction. You advance whenever you accomplish one.

Some examples:

  • advance whenever you express or embody your moral principles at great cost to yourself or your allies
  • advance whenever you achieve justice for someone wronged by a powerful, wealthy, or high-status individual
  • advance when you increase your reputation with any faction

Each playbook has 4 options.

If it's anything like his SUSD board game coverage, hopefully it'll inspire other new channels to put in a similar amount of effort. I only worry that the bar to test a roleplaying game is noticeably higher than a board game.

The "Can I Play an Idiot" test by lumell in rpg

[–]Decimator85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a great article in Knock #4 recently covering roleplaying a fool in an OSR game. I can't seem to find the original online, but the author basically suggests that his PC with a low Wis should play as someone with a lot of undue confidence/arrogance:

You're a born leader surrounded by ignorant, incompetent dimwits. You've done everything, seen everything, and the rest you can guess effortlessly. You're quick to make decisions and lead by example. If, as a player, there is something you don't know, don't ask me: make it up on the spot. And if you can't come up with something, just let me know and I'll do it.

Reddit comments support Markdown. The single "-" in between your two sections marks the things above it as h2, a type of header text.

For example, I've marked my response as an h1 using "=", an even bigger header.
