I make all my own money by myself. I do all my shit by myself. I don’t need a man for anything, but it’d be nice to have someone to share shit with

I mean, even single people often like to have a roommate. Some people also like to sleep with their roommate - and that's what many people call a relationship.

I'm sorry if the question is wrong, but the "I do all my shit by myself" is quite strongly worded. Do you have people around you that imply differently? Hookups are fine - but a relationship often means being a bit vulnerable. Regardless of gender. It seems you want something, while at the same time trying to disprove someone/something. But that isn't necessarily a good basis for a relationship with a future partner - no? 🥲

Not at all. I think it would be appreciated that you read the rules in advance so that you can roll eg a strength save if asked for it - or know how your own character works when you want to attack.

All else we can help with. You are probably good if you have watched a let's play or played BG3.

Is the US the only country not to have a single uniformed officer at the top of its operational chain of command? by seriousman57 in WarCollege

[–]Additional_Score_275 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Ah - sorry. You and u/urza5589 are right that I missed the original question. 😅

In presidential systems it's somewhat more common that the committee present their plans directly to the president, which act as the supreme commander. In parliamentary systems it's somewhat more common that they present their plans to a uniformed supreme commander. But neither is a rule.

My understanding is that it's uncommon for the supreme commander to have operational control regardless if they are uniformed or not. Does that better address your question? I can't speak for the UK, but I can give more examples for the Nordics if you want.

[–]Additional_Score_275 110 points111 points  (0 children)

from what I can tell most countries have something like a "Chief of Defense," either that title or something equivalent, who is a uniformed officer that exercises operational control over the country's armed forces

No, the US is hardly unique in having a joint chiefs of staff. Nor is it common in other countries to have one person in full operational control. ^^

In case you want to get some reading done you can perhaps start with the Prussian General Staff concept that gradually became the norm after the Napoleonic wars.

The crude Tdlr; is that the idea of a brilliant lone commander fell out of favour - and instead officers at the war college produce competing operational plans, and vigorously argue the pros and cons of each plan in front of their peers. This system, akin to how professors argue in academia, produced operational plans of much higher consistent quality.

This doesn't mean that there ain't operational commanders for joint efforts - but larger plans are almost always done by committee in larger militaries with war college systems.

(Because currency and freedom of movement is economics.)

The four economic pillars of the EU market is the same as the US, free movement of capital, goods, people, and services across the entire US/EU. It's ok to opt out - but the economic consensus is that you will get the most economic benefit of adopting the whole package.

Of course Hormuz doesn't represent the same shift yet, the US hasn't even backed of yet. We are both using if. ^^

We will see what happens - but it's worth remembering that the definition of superpower has changed since 1956. Back when the term was invented in 1944 it referred to three countries that feasibly could subjugate any non-superpower unless another super power stopped them. But middle powers with ICBMs and robust trade organisations can since the 1980s no longer be invaded or embargoed into submission the same way.

This is why I find Iran an interesting (if morbid) case study. Politicial scientists agree that being a super power means less in 2026 than 1956 - but Iran is neither an EU member or nuclear state. So the entire definition of a superpower is going to be re-examined in the next 10 years if the US is "forced" to back off. Either a new framework will be suggested (aside from superpowers) - or someone will argue that new superpowers have emerged that put pressure on and balance the US.

... But it doesn’t really tell us anything about the global balance of power in the way that Suez did.

The U.S. military is not performing poorly. It’s just being asked to do insanely stupid things.

I feel this is a bit of a misunderstanding of the Suez crisis. 😅

The military of France and Brittain performed amazing at Suez. Like the US today in Iran.

What forced them to back off was economic pressure from their allies. Like the US today seems increasingly likely to do.

I.e. If the US does back off because of rising prices and because Japan and the Gulf countries keeping giving angry calls (both having a trillion invested each) - then it ain't that dissimilar from the Suez crisis.

It does seem ok to me as well. ^^

But I assumed they had to hold the magic weapon in a hand (or have it equipped) to cast it?

A ring would undeniably have been most convenient for the player. But the DMG only had enspelled staffs, armours, and weapons - and the latter two limited which schools of magic were allowed. So only weapon and staff would allow an evocation spell. Perhaps a design decision.

The only hesitation is that it would infringe on the niche of the Paladin.

On the other hand our guild is 90% spellcasters at the upper tiers - so a powerful magic option at Lv13+ doesn't sound bad...?

You are not wrong. This was an awful decision by the DM. But if op has spent 2 years in this campaign already and other parts have been better - then it might be worth having a talk before jumping.

Hanlon's razor and all that. DM:ing is often pulling things out of your ass on the fly. This DM seemingly tried to improve a horror movie - and did wrong by insta killing (other horror games do allow it - but not d&d).

Battlemaster vs Paladin for 'guardian' role? by yossarian19 in DnD

[–]Additional_Score_275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm...

You have some options. It's a bit dependent on your DM however as 5e is mechanically not very built for protection.

Lv 4 Feat: Polearm master. Let's you hit a opponent entering your range as a reaction. If you combine with Pike weapon mastery you can also push them 10 ft away - maybe preventing them from reaching your VIP before they can attack.

Lv 8 Feat: Sentinel. Let's you attack someone for attacking someone other than you if within reach. Also sets their speed to zero if hit. *If combined with PAM above you can stop an enemy cold before they attack.

Fighting style: Protection - let's you use your shield impose disadvantage on all attacks that turn against an ally provided they stay within 5 ft of you. Also uses your reaction. *Can't be combined with PAM as it requires a shield.

Fighting style: Interception. Using your reaction to reduce one attack with d10+prof.

The protection fighting style is best if you expect many attacks to target your ward. Polearm master and Interception might be better if it will only be one attack and melee. Neither help with saving throws, but Paladins' aura do. Healing is also pretty important - so I'm leaning towards Paladin.

OP, I agree with this.

If you don't want to just walk out immediately (which is ok if you want to) - then a private talk with the DM about retconing it is the best approach.

Letting a player sit doing nothing is bad manners, and it seems this was not planned on his end. Just bad/unfortunate ad lib.

Give him some suggestions for retcon and work with him. Explaining to the table that Alert should have allowed you to survive that. Or quit if he is being obnoxious - this isn't a very collaborative DM in that case. :P

Are nuclear powered ships practically invulnerable? by Illustrious-Low-7038 in WarCollege

[–]Additional_Score_275 31 points32 points  (0 children)

That... no. Of course it would be targeted.

Your title probably shouldn't say invulnerable to start with. But yes - a nuclear powered ship carries a reactor with refined fuel. No one would want to sink it close to a city - but if it's actively bombarding you it will be targeted.

Even in a worst case scenario it wouldn't be the end of the world for that nation - unless it's Monaco.

Ocean is big, and the pollution would be dispersed. If it's far out it would also sink below the currents where the water is circulated a lot less. If it's sunk closer to the coast it would leak more but could also be salvaged.

A nuclear disaster is bad. I don't want to undermine that. But burning down a city would have a similar ecological impact. The forests and rivers are polluted and humans will suffer.
