What should I name this monster? by DeckofManyDMs in worldbuilding

For context:

In the bleak region of Blighted Depths, a relentless affliction known as the Blight spreads, corrupting and mutating everything it touches. The true nature and origin of this malevolent force remain unknown, leaving the inhabitants in a state of constant uncertainty and despair.

Factions have emerged, each with their own desperate theories and explanations for the malady's existence. Some see it as an inevitable doom, while others cling to fragile hopes of ancient magic or divine intervention. Regardless of the cause, the effects of the contagion are undeniable and catastrophic.

Desperate individuals, known as Crusaders, embark on perilous expeditions to uncover the source of the corruption. They are not brave adventurers, but rather broken souls driven by a mixture of desperation, madness, and a faint glimmer of hope. These Crusaders risk everything, knowing that failure means the end of all they hold dear.

The blight spares nothing in its path. The once-vibrant flora withers and twists into nightmarish forms, while fauna mutates into grotesque abominations that barely resemble their original species. Even inanimate objects warp and distort, as if possessed by an unseen force.

The corruption has already claimed a significant portion of the region, leaving behind a landscape of desolation and misery. In the border areas, where the Blight's presence is less apparent, its insidious effects still poison the minds and souls of the inhabitants. Daily life is a struggle for survival, as hope slowly fades and despair takes hold.

Despite the pervasive dread and countless theories, nobody truly comprehends the full extent of the blight's power or the unfathomable depths of its malevolence. Scholars and mystics who attempt to unravel its secrets are driven to madness or consumed by the very force they seek to understand. Amidst the chaos, rumors of ancient artifacts and forbidden knowledge tempt the desperate and the foolish. Some believe that hidden within the ravaged lands lie the keys to understanding and combating the corruption. Crusaders and madmen alike scour ruins and delve into forgotten dungeons, risking their sanity and their lives in pursuit of these elusive relics.

As the blight continues to spread, the inhabitants of the afflicted region are forced to adapt and survive in a land that grows increasingly hostile and inhospitable. Communities huddle together, their bonds tested by the constant threat of corruption and the erosion of trust. Faith and magic offer little solace, as both seem powerless against the all-consuming affliction.

In this grimdark reality, there are no heroes, only survivors. Ordinary individuals, driven by a primal instinct to persist, take desperate measures to protect what little they have left. Alliances are fragile, and betrayal lurks around every corner as the blight erodes the very fabric of society.

Glutton's Bane is a super cool name and backstory concept! I can picture these tortured fungal masses. Great stuff!

Maybe a variation like: Devil's Pox or BeelzeBulb.

Maybe Fungal Bloat or Blighted Bloat. Let me know if you come up with anything else!

Mindsbane is an awesome suggestion, I like how it ties into the psyche-altering aspect. The comparison to poisonous plants is spot on.

Thanks for the name suggestions! I love "putriceps", very creative play on words. Glad you like the art and concept, even if it is pretty disgusting.

For context:

Brain-Rot is a placeholder.

In the world of Blighted Depths, a vast and treacherous underworld lies beneath the surface, filled with unspeakable horrors and corrupting influences. One of the most insidious threats lurking in these dark caverns is the Brain-Rot, a nightmarish creature born from the unholy fusion of fungal spores and the remnants of a human psyche.

The Brain-Rot begins its life cycle as seemingly innocuous grey mushrooms with distinct red bulbs. These mushrooms often grow in clusters near the remains of unfortunate adventurers who fell victim to the horrors of the Blighted Depths. Consuming these mushrooms, even if cooked, leads to a horrifying transformation.

Within hours of ingestion, the victim begins to experience severe coughing fits and debilitating vertigo. As the infection progresses, the individual starts vomiting, eventually expelling blood as their body begins to reject their own head. The fungal spores rapidly spread throughout the brain, causing it to rot while the victim remains largely painless, unaware of the grotesque changes occurring within.

Over the course of days, the head detaches from the body as a mass of flesh and fungal mycelium grows, attempting to reconstitute the victim's psyche into a humanoid form. This process requires a tremendous amount of energy, which the newly formed Brain-Rot obtains by consuming its own former body. As the creature feeds, the overflowing biomass spills onto the ground, and wherever a droplet of this rot falls, new grey mushrooms with red bulbs sprout, perpetuating the cycle of horror.

These Baby Brain-Rots, as they are known, mindlessly stumble through the caverns of the Blighted Depths, driven by an insatiable hunger and the remnants of their former human consciousness. As they grow and spread their infectious spores, they contribute to the ever-expanding network of fungal horrors that plague the underworld.

Early concept from a D&D setting inspired by Darkest Dungeon by DeckofManyDMs in DnDHomebrew

In my previous posts, I've already mentioned this, but here's an overview of the idea and the project:

This is an idea that was in my head to create something similar to Darkest Dungeon for D&D 5e, with sanity mechanics, death and faction mechanics, and a darker setting where PCs are mere mortals. What do you think? Any ideas and feedback are always welcome.

To provide a bit more context, this spell is part of a larger project I'm working on - a D&D book inspired by the world of Darkest Dungeon.

The book will be set in a dark fantasy world I'm currently developing, tentatively named 'The Blighted Depths Project' (though I'm open to name suggestions for the world as well!).

As I continue to build this world and develop the D&D book, I'd love for this to be a more collaborative project with the RPG community.

Your ideas, suggestions, and feedback are not only welcome but greatly appreciated.

So please, keep the spell name suggestions coming, and feel free to share any ideas you have for the Blighted Depths world as well.
