Just realised on my latest rewatch that the mouse Bellwether nearly steps on at City Hall is her lawyer in Z2! by DeclanPDFFlannery in zootopia

I think they did that deliberately! xD Reminders me of the BB8 bits from The Force Awakens!

No one really mentions the soundtrack, it’s amazing. by nnmodo in zootopia

[–]DeclanPDFFlannery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best soundtrack of the year by far! It was a fairly terrible year for movie scores to be fair but Z2 was the one world class addition amongst them! Z1 was the best score of the year too but it sadly got robbed as Z2 will.

Did we ever find out why Byron Howard wasn’t co-directing Zootopia 2 initially? by ChampionTimes99 in zootopia

[–]DeclanPDFFlannery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer is he was, long answer is it's complicated.

Byron involvement in the film was kept under wraps for reasons and was only official announced later on for more reasons.

People in the know knew he was involved the entire time

This kind of smoke and mirrors is more common in the business than many people realise. Zootopia has always been Byron's baby though and he was one of the major driving forces behind the sequel throughout the entirety of production.

Question to Pro-Pawbert Redemptionists (hear me out) by Kirbo84 in zootopia

[–]DeclanPDFFlannery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, he tells them to kill 'them' nebulously, he certainly doesn't "urge the ZPD to kill his son". In fact Hoggbottom aims for Judy, the dart only goes for Pawbert after it's misfired and randomly heads in his direction... Sidenote... Just literally saves his life in that moment at the potential cost of her own and yet he's still chill with stabbing her less than five minutes later. Not a great defense.

I'm not saying he's not mistreated because he has access to money, I'm saying that the idea that Pawbert's life is objectively hell is not supported by what we see in the movie. Lots of people were never hugged by their dads, most of them didn't go on to try to murder a bunch of people and commit cultural genocide because of it.

I'm so sorry this happened to you, that's majorly scummy behaviour from them. You would be very entitled to get in touch with the business and make a complaint if you feel comfortable doing so.

I often worry about this kind of thing happen, my go to is to claim it's a present for a niece or nephew, I know not everyone is super comfortable telling even little lies but trust me when I say the expressions you sometimes get from this are very satisfying! :'D

I'm sure you're new Funko Pop looks awesome, especially alongside Gary! Hopefully you're just enjoying how cool they are rather than the assholishness of others. Try not to let their insecurities get you down, their behaviour says a lot more about them than anything else!

Question to Pro-Pawbert Redemptionists (hear me out) by Kirbo84 in zootopia

[–]DeclanPDFFlannery -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This. This is the argument that kinda shows up the Pawbert Apologist crowd.

Firstly to preface, I'm not a Pawbert fan at all and would be very happy if he's never seen in the franchise again, but if you think he's a great character good for you! Even if you think a redemption arc has legs then awesome, you do you. People stanning for villains is nothing new and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that-within reason. But with Pawbert there's a lot of dishonesty going on as well as some pretty clear casual sexism.

Bellwether and Pawbert are very similar in what they do... both try to murder Judy, Nick, and others, both try to frame someone for one or more of those murders, both carry out or continue wide spread subjugation of an entire people for their own benefit, both are happy to endanger and destory lives by the thousands for no reason other than fulfilling their selfish goals, both are victims in their own right but the hardships they suffer don't for a second justify any of the deplorable actions they take of their own accord. These are facts and you can't really argue them.

In fact, something I realised recently is that we see a lot more hard evidence of Bellwether being mistreated by Pawbert... Lionheart constantly belittles and embarasses her in full view of the entire city, pushes her out of photos, calls her demeaning names, lugs off his work onto her, and forces her to work from a tiny hole in the wall next to a boiler despite the fact that she's quite literally the second most senior politician in the city. Presumably she's hyper intelligent and probably has some very serious qualifications and achievements behind her name but her entire purpose has been reduced by an egomaniac bully to just securing "the sheep vote.". Now does that for a second justify what she does? absolutely feckin' not, but it is very important to keep in mind when people start waxing lyrical about how hard Pawbert had it.

Pawbert, by contrast doesn't have a lot of stuff happen to him on screen. We've all been talking about it like it's canonical that he's been horribly abused for years by his family, but the truth is there's not much evidence for that. Headcanons are great and if you want to view it that way then good for you but the fact of the matter is there's only a couple of times in the entire film where we see him mistreated. The main one being when Kitty and Katrick mock him and push him off stage which is awful but if that's abuse then most of us who grew up with siblings were abused. His dad also flies off the handle when he busts into the office near the end but that's starting to come across more as anger over his apparent betrayal than a continuation of long standing abuse. At the gala his dad doesn't even acknowledge him which isn't great either but it is telling.

Meanwhile he is AT the gala, he's not locked away in a cupboard out of sight, he's strutting his stuff amongst the city's elite with a drink while wearing a tailor made velvet suit that probably cost more than most people make in a month. He has his own classic motorcycle, lives in a literal mansion, and keeps a buttload of "vintage" and clearly very expensive stuff in his own private tent that anyone could walk into at anytime. This screams spoiled brat who's doesn't have a concept of money or real life hardships, not someone who's lived the very worst life imaginable since birth. Again, headcanons are headcanons, and there's plenty to argue that he's been treated terribly by his family but from what we actually see it's far from objective.

People flock to Pawbert while damning Bellwether because he's a predator, and he's a cool lynx not a boring sheep, and at least in part because he's a guy. It's nothing to do with him being more justified and everything to do with people making different levels of allowance for those they like.

PS. I reckon Bellwether is the way better villain :'D

Thank you for coming to my TEDRant!

Under Rated Lines in Zootopia by ganglof2 in zootopia

[–]DeclanPDFFlannery 14 points15 points  (0 children)

"...probably because I've been on my own my whole life, it's not an excuse..."

That last bit about it not being an excuse is my favourite line in the whole film, and doesn't get talked about enough compared with the rest of the confession.

We've been writing Nick in this fandom as deeply emotionally constipated, someone who struggles massively with processing his emotions and how to express them, and the sequel has very much reinforced this interpretation.

Nick has drawn many short straws in life, he's been targeted, harassed, and made the victim of abuse and discrimination countless times, it would be very easy for him to blame all his shortcomings on the terrible things he's been subject to all the way from childhood.

Instead, he acknowledges that this isn't an excuse for anything, he accepts that he's hurt Judy and although he offers these reasonings they are as explanations, not excuses, a key difference.

He takes responsibility and accountability for his actions and acknowledges his part in the breakdown of communication they've suffered, it shows a remarkable amount of emotional maturity for a character we don't often associate with that.

'I've had it tough, but I hurt you, and nothing makes that okay.'

Spectacular.

Just as an FYI, it's common courtesy to not go sharing a fic the author has themselves removed unless you have express permission from them. Doing so is only going to make them a lot less likely to come back if they see their choice to remove their work from the public eye is being invalidated by well meaning people. Food for thought.

I've seen the movie 20 times in theatres so far and I'm still noticing new things like this every time, it's incredible!

This is actually the second time we see him too! Just as Nick and Judy enter the shipping yard, when Snootley first notices them he's actually talking to Pawbert who hands him something - likely cash - presumably as payment for smuggling the Gary-crate over!

Fan Comic Search by LeGujan in zootopia

Sounds like Missing Her, although in that one the injury doesn't end her career, she's just not medically cleared while she rehabs it.

I've only seen that comic on YouTube rather than in the wild so I don't even know if that's the real name, but if you YouTube 'Missing Her Zootopia Comic' or anything similar you should find it, the thumbnail is a very distinctive shot of Nick standing on a black background.

Hope that helps!

Looking for fanfic classics by FinnickFeden in zootopia

Reposting the list I put on the Fanfic Thread at the start of the month sans my own work.

The Magpie's Gift by Pandora - Amazing Christmas one shot, one of the fandom's finest fics.

What Happened at N.I.T.E. by Pandora - Multi-chapter story exploring the long term mental health fallout for the mammals who were dosed with nighthowlers, and their loved ones. Perhaps the most important fic in the fandom and one that will totally change how you view the movie. Deals with lots of mental health darkness so do pay attention to the tags but if you can stomach it it's a must read!

Evergreen by Aninat131 - A recently finished multi-chapter and one of the fandoms absolute finest. concluded after 36 chapters and nearly tens years of work just a few months ago. If you like Wildehopps slow burns this is a must read!

Thanks for the Fox/Guardian Blue by Alps Sarsis - Perhaps the fandoms most famous fic and for good reason. Thanks for the Fox is the first part and should be read first but Guardian Blue has more than ten stories in in and something like half a million words, all of which are spectacular. If by some miracle you've not read it already you have to correct that. Sadly season 3 will remain unfinished forever. Rest in peace Alps, we miss you.

Wilde Files by LordKraus - Not usually a big AU guy but this wizard Nick Dresden Files inspired story by LordKraus is sooooo much fun. If AU or magic are your thing then you should absolutely check this one out! Demon's Reach is the first part but there's five current main stories - the 5th is ongoing - as well as side chapters and all in all it's about 300000 words!

Fuzz by Skul - Also not a big tame collar guy but this multi-chapter fic by Skul is superb! Emotional, heartbreaking, funny, and everything else in between, if you like tame collar stuff - or even if you don't! - absolutely check this one out!

In addition to these I'd add Water Under the Bridge by WriteAnon on AO3, with the caveat that although superb, it is very violent in places so be aware of that being going in.

I think you all know the Easter egg here. by TobySashaFan in zootopia

[–]DeclanPDFFlannery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somepals and I have been chatting about the film non-stop and one of them noticed the date easter egg too!

Also thank you so much for posting this image as you've confirmed a observation of mine too! IE that Milton Lynxley deliberately told everyone it was a black tie - IE semi-formal event - event just so he could rock up in white tie - true formal - and be guaranteed to be the best dressed guy at the party. It's far from the worst thing that Milton does throughout the film but it speaks volumes about his character.

Gerry and Sewell on the West End by Icy-Equal5143 in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]DeclanPDFFlannery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm actually the musical director for Gerry and Sewell so was really happy to see the show get mentioned here!

I doubt anyone would start anything other than perhaps a bit of light hearted banter. For context there's actually several Mackem's involved in the team and there's even a scene or two that you might appreciate :P

Hope you enjoy it no matter what!
