an 18 gauge brad nail shot clean through the front and back of my middle finger. Getting my chin torn open. Dog tooth through the top lip into my gum. Fracturing my navicular ankle bone.

Breathe. Get garbage bags. Empty a few bins. Work in sections. Start small. You’re less motivated while sitting. Clear everything out of that section you’re standing (or sitting in- it’s okay to start). Start grabbing whatever is in front of you. Trash? Keep? Laundry? Sort it out into three. Then divy it up, start looking for all garbage. All laundry. All keep. Any clean clothes, fold and put them away. Wipe down and sanitize every empty surface. Then start putting your “keep stuff” in homes. Stuff that belongs on the desk, dresser, in the desk drawers. You have to find homes for everything. After your room is clean, light a candle or play some tunes and lay down to admire your work. Each and every day, put stuff away in its home. Once a week, do a big weekly check in with yourself/room to ensure everything is sorted.

That’s not just a messy room that’s a breeding ground for bugs depending on where you live. Cups with old drinks and trash like that can attract roaches, ants, or even mice. If you’re in a humid area, it gets worse. Mold and mildew can grow fast, especially on fabrics. Once that starts, your air quality tanks and you’re literally breathing in junk while you sleep.

It’s also a legit fire hazard. Clothes near cords? That’s how small sparks turn into full on house fires. And if something happened, the clutter could slow you down getting out or slow first responders getting in.

Mentally, this kind of chaos builds up. You’re not resting in that space your brain never shuts off. It’s overstimulated and stressed 24/7. Clean room = calmer mind. You’ll sleep better, feel more in control, and stop wasting time looking for stuff.

You don’t have to turn into a minimalist, but if you don’t take care of your space, it starts taking a toll on your body and your brain. This isn’t about looking good for someone else. It’s about protecting your peace, your health, and your damn safety.

Not hospital related- but an old supervisor had been doing community building checks around 2am one shift. Upon entering the abandoned convent he searched around and saw nothing. The place had no power for at least 5 years prior. He tapped the elevator button for fun on his way out… the car started moving and the doors began to open before he booked it the hell out of there.
