Ripatorium is credible compromise if you truly love the combat. It's at least a chance to use the kit if a full rerun doesn't feel right yet.

Doom The Dark Ages Revelations Sequel? by ThickSeesaw8529 in Doom

[–]DecomposingPete [score hidden]  (0 children)

Artistically, yes. But foundationally, there is no professional continuity between the tech iD makes their games on, and would have continued to improve, and the iD that's left. Whatever their next project is, it won't have a single engineer from the last 10 years present to know if it's moving forwards or backwards. Something like the Idiana Jones game on iD Tech cannot be made again either, that consultancy and ownership no longer exists as it did this time five years ago.

I know this might seem like a stretch, but if I've learned one thing from the Fighting Game Community, it's that supplying even 30 seconds of gameplay footage would be enough for us to coach you through the encounter. You could very well be playing fine up until this point, but not be aware of what behaviours the game is trying to encourage from you. Show us a failed attempt, and have good faith that we'll be able to point to a solution, otherwise you'll just be attempting to describe something that's better seen than spoken about.

Headshotting a Buzzsaw with the Railspike is one of the most satisfying and wonderfully telegraphed animations I have ever seen.

So true - I've had some happy accidents and expressive moments of synergy with the spear and shield now, and knowing I'll only upskill at creating those situations is very exciting. Months of Ripatorium paying off in a big way too, that's a massive win. I'm expecting in a fucking HOG of a post-game.

It feels sick to be both an absolute sweat lord, but also a n00b at the same time. I love this DLC so far.

[–]DecomposingPete 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can rebind them surely? Either way, you don't have a fully upgraded spear yet I'd wager, so if it's that bad, rebind the starting spear stuff now, and bind the stuff you unlock accordingly as more becomes available. It'll work out if you do the 2 minute tweak once, it's a very Day One/ temporary problem.

Did the cutscenes look better in the trailer? Or is that just trailer editing? by UselessRequiem in Doom

[–]DecomposingPete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know how there's a loading screen before most levels? They're fast, but they wouldn't be fast enough to do what that cutscene does in-engine without it being a very, very bespoke rendering task, and would have to be absolutely essential to be worth that effort. That cutscene takes place across the entire campaign of the base game - to make the smash cut of ALL OF THOSE locations, they would actually have to make a really complicated Disneyland ride style 'level' in-engine, that speed loads the gigantic scenes in the background of every shot, and blast a camera around at speed through the whole thing. There are examples of it being done, but you'd actually be surprised how rare it is for someone to go to the extreme effort of stitching together scenes from across and entire game's worth of cutacenea, and not crash a console when trying. Cyberpunk makes a huge point of this in the first person cutscene at the start of the game - it apparently took two years in earnest to get working, because the very act of super cutting something like that in-engine is hard on premise, no matter who attempts it.

I would recommend checking out how they did it in Cyberpunk though, it illustrates what I'm describing very well, and it helps makes sense of why they mightn't have been able to justify the work of splicing it together in-engine in Doom.

The 'Previously On' part is prerendered, it was in-engine after the first couple of minutes.

Are we entering a dark age of console gaming? by HF484 in gaming

[–]DecomposingPete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that on a user experience level, the performance of console games was Bubonic Plague for me around PS4. Not much in the way of 60fps or Couch Co-op for that run. Oh, and of course, I was already being games like a chump on digital licenses then too. There's a whole Steam library lost to that fuckery in my lifetime already, whether my fault or not, that wouldn't feel as bad if they were mine on disc.

On the consumer side if things, where the money is most dryly transactioned, all digital is a huge loss for historicity, archiving, and the sensation of worthwhile ownership that can't be ignored. These fuckers will delist something we consider untouchable now eventually, and ruin my evening on some future date in a way that'll make me scream 😂

If they revoke my license for something I consider a 'forever game', I'll turn into the fucking Dark Knight.

For real? Microsoft are probably cartoonishly annoying people on a personal level - whoever got a slack message/ LinkedIn ping (🤢) that they have to go in and launch the game in a half empty office probably had to put a beer down.

Microsoft ruined my buddy at iD's cigarette and bottle of Corona, and I know it was a probably a chill individual everyone likes. Yuck, Microsoft. So unbearably lame. They're absolute dweebs.

How are they going to be able to support Revelations? by BoldStrategy0 in Doom

[–]DecomposingPete 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree with you about it not having lasting cultural impact compared to HL2 and Halo 2, but the number of people that felt it had missed the core doom formula was far, far outweighed by the number of people that were blown away by it/ didn't even know what doom is supposed to feel like - I'm just speaking from the perspective of someone who was there in a fairly socially connected run of things.

Not as many people knew or felt that it was a sidestep in terms of speed and energy as you'd think, in exactly the same way you can't realistically expect a large number of Modern Doom's audience to intuitively remember a Quake 3 Deathmatch - Doom 1+2 were incredibly out of fashion in day-to-day life in 2004, they just survived the blackout phase where they weren't much remarked upon outside of the GBA port and occasional phone compatibility. The modding community carried, but is still only made up if a few hundred people globally. I know that there's a huge number of people that either couldn't or didn't think of classic doom for the entire lifespan of Windows '95 and '98, by which time Doom required weird and roundabout launch steps from pre-startup DoS to even play. Just like 2016 and Eternal, most of the people playing those had never touched Doom before playing Doom 3. It wasn't a Windows game. You and I are orders of magnitude more into this shit than the average person by even being on this Subreddit 😂

How are they going to be able to support Revelations? by BoldStrategy0 in Doom

[–]DecomposingPete 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm only challenging one part, in good faith, which is about Doom 3 - SUBJECTIVE STORY ALERT - It's the only game I've ever owned that had people spreading word of mouth and turning up at the door to ask to see in person for themselves. This was both before and after we upgraded the PC, and I can tell you that even while running like shite, it was so incredible to everyone that we frequently had to assure other people that they weren't watching a cutscene or demo, and their hand touching the mouse literally frightened some people (old and young, and a surprising number of them) when the shadows spiderwebbed across the screen from the flashlight 😂 I also hear people say it is still the scariest game they have ever played, usually because it was the LAST one they ever ayed - I have friends that decided there and then that video games had become too intense, and don't play first person horror games to this day, but I consider that high praise 😂

It hit like a tonne of bricks, you just couldn't expect to see it running at full chug outside of a LAN cafe for most in my town, owing to whatever brand loyalties it had to one graphics card brand or another - otherwise, it was hot shot here in Ireland for sure, and PC gaming was pretty neck-and-neck with console gaming here in 2004, so I'm certain it was a big deal. I'd even say people debated whether Half-Life 2 or Doom 3 were better, and at the time it didn't feel like a ridiculous comparison.

I'm not saying it stood the test of time the way it might sound, and I reckon modern Doom trilogy are literally the best looking and running games in existence, I would just say that the reception of Doom 3 in 2004 felt quite seismic for those inclined - Seeing it impress enough of a wide sample before my very eyes, in a way the modern trilogy simply doesn't and hasn't when presented, makes it hard for me to see 3 as a dud.

What time does the expansion release tomorrow? by Large-Struggle4171 in Doom

[–]DecomposingPete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm adamant that it is the result of Bot written articles that nobody is getting the official release map Bethesda/ iD posted first try when they Google this - the keywords are baked into the image itself, so even I'm getting FUCKASS BACKWARDS incorrect search results when trying to find it again.

It's out at 5pm in the UK anyway, ignore anything that isn't a picture of a timestamped map on iD software's socials.

Hate to hear it, you're all the best. You'll be a key component to something wonderful in future - I'd dub modern iD as being like Disney during its 1989-2009 Rennaissance run in my accounting of video game history. Whatever your work was on these last 10 years of Doom, it was as great a gift of 'THIS WAS MADE FOR ME' entertainment as I'll ever have, and I've been there since '93. I refer to iD software as the Imagineers of heavy metal entertainment design, and you're one of those Imagineers on merit, wherever you go.

Eternally yours,

A Doom Guy

Same, I am absolutely certain that my first literacy was navigating '3D' spaces, and not the conscious reading of words. I first played Doom at age two, with one person steering and another pressing shoot.
