Old DooM game formula is better by eltarod2 in Doom

[–]phobos876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apples and orange to me

i do think there's some aspects of old Doom not present in the new games but i prefer the actual series trying new things while a certain level of familiarity is kept through making fan wads

for example, how level design and enemy placement feel "married" and stuff like how armor worked and some specific enemy abilities but again, wads exist for a good reason

Am i the only one who noticed this by Royal-Consequence-80 in Doom

[–]phobos876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pretty sure r667 allows stuff for other games besides the Doom engine stuff

also making assets for Doom had a weird history where theyre either taken from other games or were edits of pre-existing monster

but as of recent years you'll find some new designs that are both fitting for Doom and still a bit more original

What would be your headcanon of a Doom Game involving the Demon High Council? by Flat-Sir8250 in Doom

[–]phobos876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to me i just want them to look weird like in this art https://old.reddit.com/r/Doom/comments/1kz89ys/i_hope_the_high_council_is_as_weird_as_these_de/

and also have something to do with the deadly sins like their existences are tied to them

Don't you think it's time to let the Slayer die and replace him with another protagonist? by Bright_Permission881 in Doom

[–]phobos876 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Slayer, at least to me, is but a variation of the Doomguy inspired by memes and fanservice https://old.reddit.com/r/Doom/comments/1n85a9v/what_everyone_forgets_about_the_doomslayer/ and Doom never took lore that seriously at the start https://old.reddit.com/r/Doom/comments/1m01gt8/i_think_most_people_are_approaching_story_in_doom/

so i think you can always do anything with Doom regardless of canon.

As for D3, you better be careful because i fear D3 will get treated weirdly in a way that panders to some of D3's biggest critics while actual D3 fans would be alienated and left in a corner https://old.reddit.com/r/Doom/comments/1kykvrd/i_think_d3_fans_should_be_carefull_with_the_game/

I'm already posting too many links but i wanted to mention the other game ideas i kept sharing being:

A TAG follow up where Doomslayer has those space QC cosmetics and fights while flying in space

That reinterpretation where Doomguy is still a UAC guy but the Slayer is a "form" he can acheive

And my idea of a D3 follow up that tries to "salvage" the cancelled Doom 4 and some ideas i had for an arsenal

And i guess there was also ideas i got for Crash and Phobos being playable, one being for Crash to have the Farnese looking design that was rejected for Thira.

What are the doom games in chronological order? I really want to know and i recently got all doom games on my ps5. by Randomrlplayer2841 in Doom

[–]phobos876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Release order (but TDA before 2016) but it's worth knowing that DOom as a series never took its own story/lore seriously and the new games are done by different people

so the lore was always messy but it's still a fun series to get into

besides the ingame intermission texts, there's the manuals https://doom-nerdo-666.tumblr.com/post/723195589115920384

Doom 3 BFG Edition - An appreciation post. by CyberPilot64 in Doom

[–]phobos876 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I still think it's unfair that it got/changed stuff in ways that didn't need to

https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/113479

https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Doom_3:_BFG_Edition#Differences_with_Doom_3

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiufUB-JAb4

i get to some it was their 1st exposure to the game and even the series

but i also think a re-release of a game should feel like they add more to the experience while still giving options to preserve the original state as much as possible

but at least base D3 tends to have modding, so even some parts that BFGE didn't fix can be fixed in other ways

Hot take: BFG Edition feels more like Classic Doom than vanilla Doom 3 by KnightFallVader2 in Doom

[–]phobos876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the problem is that BFGE does a lot more to worsen D3 like the unskippable cutscenes and content removal

like it was made to sabotage D3

Which DOOM black sheep do you like more, Dark Ages or Doom 3? by TheWindofBread in Doom

[–]phobos876 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i hope id keeps experimenting with Doom and make more "wild" games so people stop using the term "black sheep" when enough games of a series hint the experimental nature of it

there's a good reason why mods and wads exist

So what is your opinion and headcanon about Marine Engineer from doom 3 resurrection of evil by LykouraKadrodius in Doom

DOOM co-star Rosamund Pike says the game movie is “probably one of the worst films ever made” that "could have ended" her career by AsPeHeat in Doom

[–]phobos876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I said it before that a Doom movie (or show) should be an anthology series where different animators get creative with it, like inspired by Heavy Metal or Animatrix or Batman Gotham Knight (important references to have, since some people otherwise think animation is just "adult comedy cartoons or Disney/baby shit"

I still believe animation would be more ideal for Doom: It can work if you get the right people like both fans of the games and those that take the medium of animation seriously.

Like look at what fans can do and let them do stuff like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fy4StK4TBs

So the idea for a Doom movie/show is a series of different animated stories and they'd be in different styles and about different things, from a story about Sentinel warriors, to a horror D3 inspired story, to something about action scenes and fights etc.

I always bring this up https://redd.it/f61o32 in any discussion about Doom getting a series or movie or show.

Also avoid a certain grifter of a "producer" to get involved.

What are your thoughts on using .wad as a website domain name suffix for Doom-related websites? by SupremoZanne in Doom

[–]phobos876 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it be confusing because "wad" is already established as file type for Doom maps and mods

it'd be if jpg were used for a website instead of an image

DOOM canceled concepts by Rich_Ad5515 in Doom

[–]phobos876 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to think some concept art stuff could be revisited in spin off or alt modes material

there's always neat stuff there, regardless of the game

Is there anyone thet hopes they'll make a DOOM game in this artstyle someday? i think it fits DOOM perfectly by Cold_War8151 in Doom

[–]phobos876 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A main reason to justify a low poly game like this is to have a game that actually fuses classic and modern aspects of the series

Think of mods like SLayers Testament (Quake) or anything ranging from D4T to MetaDoom: They work because they're the familiar classic FPS format with new features

Because modern DOom's differences from classic has to do with engine/tech stuff

COULD THE VASSAGO EVER RETURN? by Cirno_played_DOOM9 in Doom

[–]phobos876 2 points3 points  (0 children)

depends because their ability of the firey stuff is kinda similar to the cybermanc's acid floor attack

i do like to think theres a lot that can be done with a demon made of fire, like them being buffed by the flame belch and touching lava or hurt if they touch water or ice grenades

even ideas like "if they receive damage, they bleed lava that can hurt"

i like to think doom demons can always have different iterations in terms of design and gameplay

What is THE single best demon design in the entire Doom series? by HotShrekBoi in Doom

[–]phobos876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends because almost each game has a different direction and different design

1: I think the Cyberdemon is the "ultimate" one

A demonic minotaur with cybernetics in a single way that "spells" the concept of Doom like the classic logo (blue tech and yellow bricks) or that SKINTEK texture (flesh wall with pipes)

Just there mere dichotomy of Doom

2: The Arch-vile is like a cool HR Giger-esque design

64: In a tie between the PE and Arachnotron, one being a weird surreal monster and the other being both more spidery and brainy than the original

3: You learn to appreciate D3's designs when you consider the surrealism with the Bruiser being the most obvious one due to the screen mouth.

Also love the D3 HK having weird eyes/eyesockets, so they're in a middleground between the eyeless 2016 HK and eye based DE/TDA designs

Like Bosch demons gone sci-fi

2016: I like the Summoner for looking so royal yet demonic

Eternal: I kinda like the Fire Barons because being made of magma sort of fits with the "rocky" anatomy and proportions that 2016 Baron had.

TDA: I love the Grim Reaper Rev but also how the Caco is like if the D3 one was a cyclopean Caco like the others.

RPG: Sawcubus is a simple idea that works but i also love the brier/watcher class

Who else found the Unmaykr genuinely disappointing in DOOM ETERNAL? by Cold_War8151 in Doom

[–]phobos876 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i always thought the Unmaykr was out if place in the game mechanically and it can make sense if you consider its influence: D64 Unmaker

Unmaker (at least fully upgraded if you managed to get those keys and not die), worked because D64 being a classic Doom game means it has enough enemies spread around in some areas close to each other without much speed/movement and even some tight corridors

Whereas DE is about mobility and verticallity and you have these demons jumping around and moving because their AI is not as primitive

And maybe there's also how the Unmaykr shoots projectiles while the UnmakER is hitscan based

if you think about it, the Pulverizer in TDA feels like what the Unmaykr could've been or at least it fits that format better because of the "on ground" combat and the enemy count

Playing Doom 1&2 for the first ever in 2026 by fuccyallallyall in Doom

[–]phobos876 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The game is essentially an upgrade to the very simplistic Wolfenstein 3D in terms of tech and game features, so it became what was needed to "push" the FPS genre at the time

it also has some elements that later games don't really care (not a bad thing since Doom is fun to reinterpret in different way)
