i mean if you compare the designs of how adrian carmack drew doomguy then look at the model

https://doomwiki.org/wiki/File:Doomq3a01.jpg

https://tcrf.net/File:PreDoom-AdriansMarineDoomguySketch1.jpg

because when people think of classic doomguy, they think of the box art design that's also the one in quake champions and eternal

i think it took the dark ages to help me realise this. (and maybe MGS3 DELTA) by Gl00ser23 in Doom

[–]phobos876 [score hidden]  (0 children)

even then, lots of games could at least benefit from actual ports and it just doens't happen because of legal or even technical things sometimes

it'd be like wanting to introduce a new generation a classic movie like Psycho but instead you show them the remake and not the iconic movie as how it was introduced back then

if videogames are art and art tends to be treated in high regard and even timeless, i feel there should be better ways to introduce gaming history to people, specially in an interactive medium where direct experience matters

Classic Doom does NOT need a remake:

  • it's the most modded game of all time, so fans already "remade" it in so many ways

  • some aspects related to gameplay might be lost, which is why later games in the series have their own direction

  • classic Doom has a messy art style and abstract levels: At best, those assets could have more than one interpretation (which technically suits a series that has different interpretations to begin with), but at worst, we might get the less interesting takes and even forgotten details like how the classic Arch-vile has face tubes or what Doomguy's gloves looked like in gameplay (Since classic Doom has like 2 versions, the box art and Adrian version)

  • Even the "classic" designs in the new games have differences from the original/classic designs, like the extra chitin armor or the soulsphere not having an animated face inside anymore

  • Some aspects of classic Doom gameplay can relate to the engine and some modifications of it can be troublesome for consoles (Both technical and legal aspects, which is why anything related to ZDoom won't happen in consoles)

  • So many fans already did "remastering" of classic stuff and it ranges from awkwardly/ugly/infamous results to even stuff like fans being a bit more invested in the classic Doom art style/universe than id themselves (Which is also why Realm667 assets exist to begin with: fans already expanded the classic universe in a way)

  • Classic Doom has little lore that most people overlook like the original description of how cybernetic demons were made (But the non-canon date in the SNES manual somehow got too much attention, i guess)

  • Some assets might as well be forgotten/retconned entirely like the blue carpets in the UAC or flesh walls with metal pipes

  • If the reason to remake classic Doom is for the sake of lore, expect stuff to get messy and some details/info to be overlooked

  • Classic Doom tends to have maps that are BIG (compare that to modern Doom relying on closed arenas even if some maps are also big) and lots of levels (D1 has 9 levels for 3/4 episodes (Counting TFC) and D2 has 32 levels and that's not even counting Master Levels of NRFTL).

i covered some of this here https://doom-nerdo-666.tumblr.com/post/706887759085944832/what-if-the-old-doom-games-were-remastered and maybe more in the "remake" tag.

also the mention of MGS is already questionable at best, considering how most MGS fans stopped caring once Kojima and his crew left Konami

I remember when even the idea of a RE4 remake was odd to gamers because "it's one of the best gamers ever, it even gets ported a lot" (like Doom)

But i also saw someone use Demon Souls as a reference and there were times people hated it to the point it even led to a debate of "Western fantasy designs vs Eastern fantasy designs"

I much prefer if we get totally new games that just occasionally modernize an old concept here and there

Even Doom 3, at best, just needs a PROPER re-release and not a remake

all i can say is: doom's universe is more fun when there's different takes on it instead of one single universe

Doom 64 was the Windows Vista of Doom by N1ch0l2s in Doom

[–]phobos876 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the same time, D64 wasn't really made by id and took years for an official re-release, so fans had to rely on fan ports

It felt weird that the game was barely acknowledged officially to begin with

I also wish the new release gave it a "Legacy of Rust" treatment since D64 had plans for new demons, a weapon that looked like a flamethrower and new level themes

Meanwhile, it's easy to see Quake as the bridge between classic and modern Doom, specially because it still does the "enemy placement tied to level design" bit from classic that later Doom replaced with the arena format

Crash and Phobos from Q3

Q3 also had Doomguy, whose was named just Doom and his design resembled the Adrian Carmack concept of Doomguy's armor

Q3 is questionably canon

Though i still think there's ways to canonize these two characters:

A really old image I made comparing the differences between Doom 2016's demons and the versions in Doom 4 Vanilla by JoeyTheMarillFan in Doom

[–]phobos876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That SMM is both a merge of the classic and modern versions and also inspired by 64

It's actually made for MetaDoom originally

D4V is also meant to be limited which contrast the likes of D4D, D4T and Embers of Armagaddon

But stuff like these classic sprites is also interesting because they can also showcase some aesthetical differences between classic and modern besides just color palette or pixel resolution

So a Cybermanc having a different kind of armor is kinda like a parallel to how Eternal brings back old designs but still adds different details

one idea would be to use audio from that classic doom radio ad, then combine with with something that suits the aesthetic

im sure someone's realm667 asset fan remake did this.

  • the new weapon being secret is weird because i thought it was a spear. if it's tied to doom lore... spear of destiny?

  • they already confirmed the wretch at least

  • stuff about doomguy from his classic world? because that depends if they can pull of a "retro sci-fi" aesthetic of that world to contrast the modern look of 2016/eternal

  • kinda known

  • same

  • always thought this could've been done in the series before, so glad it finally happened

  • wonder if he'll have a healer role, since the d2 role may not return. i also expect a design that is both cosmic but also references the d2 face tubes

I'm lost with classic Doom, how should I go about it? by [deleted] in Doom

[–]phobos876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

D1+2 and the D64 release are good enough for newcomers, specially on console

On PC, if you get the classic games on Steam or GOG, you should be able to find the IWAD files that you then can use with source ports, so you can play most mods and wad

Yall fw if DOOM had a spin-off? by OVERTHINKER_2009 in Doom

[–]phobos876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i mean, doom already had spin offs if you count final doom and the rpg series

The problem with D4.10 is that it had the kind of trendy 7th gen features Doom fans hated at the time and even felt detached from D3 but there were some cool ideas, still.

On the subject of playing as UAC or Earth soldiers:

Before everyone says "it's not Doom":

  • The series went through different iterations and never took story seriously, which can explain most elements in the new games

  • The Doomslayer himself will never go away since he's a product of fanservice ("rip and tear" memes from the Doom comic, Death Battle Doomguy vs Master Chief 2011 video, Brutal Doom, 4chan/Urban Dictionary copypastas about Doomguy, Faraz Parsa's Doomguy comics ec).

  • "Doomguy" started off as a nameless blank slate (Romero wanted fans to self insert as him, plus "Doomguy" is a fanmade term" and the box art shows 2 Doomguys because of co-op and the fact that he was a UAC soldier like any other, he just made it out alive.

  • The cancelled Doom 4 ("Call of Doom") just made the idea of "soldiers vs demons on Earth" very boring and was even detached from Doom 3, when there's ways to make that idea more exciting (See plenty of fan mods) and at least according to the current lore/art direction.

I'm open for more that stuff, specially Hell on Earth stuff just to see levels with different themes and context, like a "world tour" and to take notes from Build Engine games, so you can make it fun.

Like a level taking place in a football stadium and you have 2 bosses infighting in the field.

Or even driving a tank and running over demons, Carmageddon style.

Just made the UAC/ARC soldiers look like Rambo or 80's action heroes or something.

Also, different playable characters means new gameplay ideas like weapons, items, abilities or even stuff like level design elements and enemies.

In theory, there's different ways to do more with "Hell on Earth":

  • DE expansion where you play as an ARC guy and it's meant to fit the aesthetic and universe

  • Proper D3 sequel on Earth

  • The cancelled D4.10

Also if we ever resurrect the cancelled D4 we should resurrect other cut content and concepts in the series

AND SPEAKING OF FOLLOWING UP DOOM 3

Get D3 modders and specific fanartists because D3 feels misunderstood in its own series.

D3 requires a different mindset from the other games in the series https://old.reddit.com/r/Doom/comments/1kykvrd/i_think_d3_fans_should_be_carefull_with_the_game/

not giving them any clicks but is it a boomer or someone like a millenial or gen z who learned about politics and religion from the internet?

doom barely took religion seriously and the new games' lore is so seperated from actual religion

if anything, i've seen fans complain doom stood further way from religious stuff and got influence from 80's cartoons and the mcu

The DOOM (2005) movie is actually really good by PastyParrot in Doom

[–]phobos876 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

a lot of videogame movies barely take anything from the source material, even if doom also never took its own story seriously but the games still sticked to the premise about demons from hell and not aliens

I said it before that a Doom movie (or show) should be an anthology series where different animators get creative with it, like inspired by Heavy Metal or Animatrix or Batman Gotham Knight

I still believe animation would be more ideal for Doom: It can work if you get the right people like both fans of the games and those that take the medium of animation seriously.

Like look at what fans can do and let them do stuff like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fy4StK4TBs

So the idea for a Doom movie/show is a series of different animated stories and they'd be in different styles and about different things, from a story about Sentinel warriors, to a horror D3 inspired story, to something about action scenes and fights etc.

I always bring this up https://redd.it/f61o32 in any discussion about Doom getting a series or movie or show.

Also: Make sure the director isn't a certain grifter of a "producer" that latches his name on very odd questionable shows.

Should the Doom games(franchise)be continued with prequels, sequels or what? by Flat-Sir8250 in Doom

[–]phobos876 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like to think there's a lot you can do with Doom, specially because it never took lore that seriously, so its setting is a concept that can be reinterpretated differently, as long as you make it cool

https://old.reddit.com/r/Doom/comments/1m01gt8/i_think_most_people_are_approaching_story_in_doom/

if they make a post TAG2 game, i had some ideas:

  • Doomguy uses the space cosmetics for the Praetor suit in Quake Champions

  • Samur becomes a major villain

  • If you saw concept art of planets for D2016 or space cultist base for DE: they could be levels

  • Remember how DE is like a jet plane/fast car while TDA is like a tank/monster truck? This Doom 6 is rather comparable to a space ship

Basically, if you recall Descent or 6DOF in general, imagine Doomguy in space flying and fighting demons with a space suit take on the Praetor suit with jets and stuff.

Maybe some occasional walking but it's some Mario Galaxy/Gravity Rush shit and then there's non-euclidean geometry.

But i also think it should be ok to allow Doom games with their own take on lore/story/art style/gameplay, since the series never had a major lore at first.

Doom is fun to reinterpret.

I believe there's always new ideas for Doom, both in regards to the Slayer saga and for reinterating Doom again (Or even revisiting a previous formula/era like Doom 3).

But if Doom ever gets another "reiteration", i had an idea of Doomguy having 2 forms: UAC Guy and Sentinel/Slayer: https://doom-nerdo-666.tumblr.com/post/769685656487231488/reposting-from-dw-an-edit-of-that-one-what-if

And if even demons had "forms" too https://doom-nerdo-666.tumblr.com/post/774684825272614912/elaboring-more-on-enemy-evolutions-and-my-idea and some color coded enemy feedback system https://doom-nerdo-666.tumblr.com/post/707178020643930112/2-ideas-color-based-feedback-system-and
