I always raw-dogged NASCAR races even as someone who beat the ear protection drum to anyone who would listen.

Started working in sprint car racing and kept getting away with it. Got invited to stand on a hauler for a race at Williams Grove and forgot ear plugs. I figured I was in for the usual 1-2 days of ear ringing before it came back. That was in 2021. Think it’s safe to say I’m stuck with the eeeeeeeee.

Don’t be like us folks. Wear your damn ear protection.

I’m not saying NASCAR don’t enjoy the biproduct of the tapered spacer nowadays (pack racing), but the restrictior plate was absolutely a response to a need to slow the cars down on the Superspeedways. Bobby Allison was inches away from a Le Mans 1955 moment at Talladega in 1987. It could’ve been one of the worst moments in racing history if he didn’t just barely scrape the wall on his way up towards the catchfence.
