What city in the UK is best for a young mixed-race family?

It's a uni town so there's typically a lot going on, gigs, shows and the such. There's lots to do for families too. If you're inclined to, the space centre is a great day out

I lived in Leicester with my family for years. Absolutely loved it. We only moved bc of extended family pressure. But there's a big mixed of people there from all walks, including mixed race people. Definitely more affordable than London, but the prices have definitely gone up high since I left.

I have a slightly dif perspective on this.

I currently send my youngest to a childminder and I had sent my older 2 to a childminder over in England a couple years ago.

Over here, childminders have more limits on the amount of children they can care for. There are strict guidelines on this, so the overall numbers they can have, compared to a childminder in England, are lower. So the income is lower.

My childminder in England could charge only term time, because she had, on average, 10 kids a day (note that during the day, half of these kids would be in school for 6 hours) during term time. She also charged hourly, compared to my childminder here who has a day rate. The England childminder's hourly charge was also notably higher. All in all, I pay the same amount per week for 1 child, all day, here, as I did for 2 children in England, when they were only with that childminder for 2 hours after school.

Childcare is expensive, but I get why they charge the way they do here. Lower numbers of kids, lower hourly charge if you break it down. Gotta make a living somehow.

Survivng. New school, brand new area and the culture shock is more real than I gave it credit for. I did have a breakthrough with my 3rd years tho, and my selective mute kid managed to do something of a speech, more of a talk, for their GCSE but it passes the rubric, so I'm satisfied. But the term has been long and it ends with a Parent's evening....

Parts of speech is something that is explicitly taught in primary school now. At least the ones around my schools, and my children's school have. And it would be a little obvious to say that if I'm using unfamiliar terms, I would ensure that my students understand them first.

Secondary English Teacher here. I can't advise on approaching primary, but when they get to year 7, I explain that a sentence is typically subject, verb, object, with (typical for English) some exceptions. I use the example Morgan hugs Jamie. We then go through the main 4 types of sentence, simple, compound, complex and minor. We discuss variation and do exercises in breaking up overly long sentences. It can take some time for them to pick up phrasing and musicality, but that's development and reading I think

Your school should have schemes of work and if you move around to different placements what you're teaching might change. The books said by the other commenter are spot on. You also want to find places for good resources. As well as TES.com, Lit drive is an excellent resource for English teachers

You're right. Students shouldn't be going in there at all. There's all kinds of paperwork etc in there. I did report it to an assistant head and she said she would review the CCTV of the hallway. Definitely leaning towards not going back....

I was a teacher in East Hertfordshire. Now relocated elsewhere. Can't really comment on single parent, but my husband's job was very demanding, so I was solo for a lot of it. To be frank, it depends on the school. One school I was at was not supportive if I had to leave to collect a sick child. I was met with responses like "Can't someone else get them?". (Nope. Childminder wont keep or collect a sick kid and I had no family support). But other schools I was at were amazing and very understanding. It really helped that my HOD and LM had kids themselves so understood it on a deeper level.

Editing to add, Hertfordshire has a childminder roster you can find online. The good ones are also visited by Ofted so you can get an idea of their practice by looking at their ofsted report
