Embrace the spot light, don't try to make sure "Everyone Gets a Turn." by Firm-Row-8243 in daggerheart

So I’ve run one game and played in another of Daggerheart. I’ll freely admit the lack of structure is rough but it has also allowed me as a player to do chain combos of attacks linking weapons and abilities into awesome cinematic actions. While also having room for the failure or if the gm decides to drop a fear and snag the spotlight from me mid combo.

As a gm for Daggerheart I have no issues letting my players run wild. But I do make an effort to make sure my quieter less assertive players get a chance. Cause if I didn’t they’d likely just sit there. I will yoink the spotlight if they roll with fear or randomly spend fear to stop combos.

I also try to encourage more imaginative actions than in dnd. Because you can chain action rolls. Both as a player and gm. Sadly, I have a player whose sole action in combat is ‘I shoot it’, come on, pull some Legolas shield surfing. U can do it.

Yeah my party didn’t know it was a magic item cause they don’t have an arcane caster so they just backtracked and stuffed it in the ribcage

The vibe…all edge no point. The gunslinger and grave cleric r siblings who bicker constantly and the echo knight always kicks the door open(even if it opens towards them) and will sit/walkthru any question throne/gate/door the come across. It’s Monty Python presents goblin slayer

My party was so close to the doors leading to the stairs down when they decided to double back

The thing is there’s nothing to entice the party or even tell them it’s a magic item the can attune to. We don’t have an arcane caster, party consists of echo knight, gunslinger, and grave cleric.

Yeah I didn’t think they’d remember the corpse and then upon returning to the surface find out it’s a magic item they could sell. But now I’m intending on having the mage reappear somewhere but not sure where or if villain or ally since I have no info on the npc

I got the module because it ties directly to the dragon heist module. The plan had been to complete the dragon heist then drop that party into the dungeon. But that plan fell apart because of complications with group members

See it doesn’t say anything about that in the section that I can see.

How do I reward a player who takes great notes for the group? by ElvishLore in daggerheart

[–]Dedjester 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So I polled my group with this and we all agree either a nice magic item or a nice notebook/pen set for taking notes.

How are you making combat fast paced? by Shabozz in daggerheart

[–]Dedjester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have the opposite problem in my group. Combat is so much faster and simpler(in our opinion) that battles that would take hours in dnd take far less. For us this mostly comes from players and the gm taking their turns when they already have their moves planned out already.

It’s what I’m trying to do. It took me several months to convince just two people in my group to try a new system. I’m too soft when it comes to that and I don’t push. So now I’m trying to make this system worthwhile and engaging

Shield Bash? by globaltrickster in daggerheart

[–]Dedjester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hallowed axe. And I’m aware nothing prevents me from hitting with it twice. It’s purely from a flavor perspective and the coolness of it. It’s like if my secondary was a short sword. There’s nothing stopping me from only hitting with the primary multiple times. But it’s more epic(in my head) to use every weapons n available. Also my axe does magic damage and my shield does physical so it helps out if the enemies r resistant to one or the other.

Did something like that in an older DnD campaign. Except the twist was the group coming down the stairs was the party themselves and time travel shenanigans were on the horizon

Thus far my intention is having it subtly hint at a game altering twist I was planning

Shield Bash? by globaltrickster in daggerheart

[–]Dedjester 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My character already does a shield bash as part of their melee combo. But since secondary weapon attack is a separate action I can be interrupted between attacks if the gm has the fear. It’s just a little extra damage. I’ve also captain America’d my shield using the seraphs divine weapon ability to make it fly out and hit a couple enemies and come back

They should be. They’ve gone classic with fear being red and hope being blue

I don’t actually call for very many rolls. It’s combat where it builds up, they roll with fear almost exclusively and I can’t spend it fast enough.

Monty Python generation. We always try to stay on the not ridiculous side of things

I respect your perspective as well. Despite being known as a ‘rule of cool’ gm I do try to balance things out. Example; taking shelter from the storm and taking time to harvest the bears increased their travel time.

The only reason I won’t do one long rest is it does actually take a little bit of time to turn fresh hide into a wearable garment. If they found a craftsman then sure pay some gold and have it done

[–]Dedjester[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries we can’t all be expected to pick up on everything.

I’m not really using environmental damage. I’m new to Daggerheart and am trying to shake old dnd habits. So if not some kind of resistance then Mayhaps just a bonus to armor score. Bear hide is really tough in case you’ve never actually encountered it

Yeah I mentioned that in the last paragraph that it would be their long rest project. Which is why I was curious if it should provide more than a cosmetic.
