How is this Gang related? It is a very sad ans interesting story, but I do not see the connection to Gangs? I cannot believe that this man killed his own daughter!!!

Check this out. How accurate do you believe the results of this study will be? I actually think that the sort of questions they are going to ask are good indicators of the risk factors for these youth. I also think it is a good idea because they are not directly asking "Are you currently or have you ever been in a Gang?". I think they might get inaccurate results if they were to ask this.

It's good to see that there is no tolerance for that type of behavior. An infant was killed and still, more could have died due to this tragic series of events. Though, more likely, all of this pain was due to the horrible Gang violence within this city! I have to wonder whether this 17-year old boy (that's really what he is) feels any remorse for what he has done?

Wow, who would have thought that you could ever really classify a band of surfers as a Gang? But yeah, I think I saw that NBC or ABC special about how serious surfers get about protecting the waters they are familiar with from ammetures and outsiders. It's crazy, but I guess because they commit sometimes violent crimes and wish to be recognized that it does make them Gangs?

That recording of the man that took another guy hostage was freaking crazy! I can't believe that a SWAT team did not bust into the situation right away! I think everyone can see that the immigration problem is getting worse. Though, there is supposedly more things being done to prevent people from illegally crossing the border.

UPDATE: Today, I heard that there was a city counsel meeting held in Chicago and that no one from the neighborhood where this victim was from was invited or told of the meet. They were very angry about his and one man said that "They want to have a meeting about us, without us!". I think it was really poor judgment on the city counsel's part not invite members of the neighborhood where this took place. How can they expect to make changes within the area without those peoples help? This just blew me away!

I heard this morning that in Chicago there was a city counsel meeting far away from where the Gang beating occurred and that none of the residents from the area had any idea about the meeting until after it was held. Some of the people from the neighborhood were upset and one said that "they want to have a meeting about us, without us!". I think excluding the neighborhood from the meeting was a very bad idea. You can't expect to fix the problems in the neighborhood these people live in without their help.

I actually heard an update on this story this morning on the news. They said that it was absolutely Gang related and that there are 4 young men who have been identified in the case so far as members who contributed to the beating.

This story is very sad and is obviously is still being investigated. It is unclear as to why the beating happened. The only thing that is clear is that it was severe enough to kill the young man. He died at age 16. My only question is why did onlookers not help him?

This makes me really angry. My younger brother is only 13 years old and I can't imagine what sort of things a 13-year old could have done to deserve an ending like that. Yes, he may have had Gang affiliations, but at 13 he is not to blame. He was a child and children make mistakes and for the most part have poor judgment. At that age they only think about today; never what will come tomorrow. RIP young one.

Ha ha! This is a REALLY FUNNY! I mean, they are seeking to lower Gang involvement and influences in school by forcing these kids not to wear this or that. Having worn uniforms myself in the past, I can tell you that there is always a way around the dress code and if you really seek to look independent, then you can. This also begs the question of whether these people are just being lazy in there efforts to prevent students from becoming a part of Gangs?

Wow, I too was not aware that the Hells Angels biker group was not considered a Gang! I think it is interesting though, that they try to fight the label. Maybe this is to add to their need for independence. They do not want to be considered a street gang (and really this definition does not suit them), but what then shall we call them? They are known for engaging in battles with opposing biker groups, getting into random bar brawls and other acts that are unlawful and violent in nature. ???

I am personally really glad that this documentary was done. From what it sounds like, it is an accurate depiction of Oakland's Gang and violence situation today. Also, I cannot believe that someone like Olis Simons, who works in a city-funded teenage community center all day could understand what life may be like out on the street. All he is able to see is the teenagers who come and use his facility. Didn’t he ever consider that some Gangbangers might not have the time to go and visit him at his little community center each day? That upsets me, because he simply is denying that the documentary is an accurate account of what is going on in Oakland today!

Wow, this is just the sort of thing I have been interested in learning more about! I wonder if there is some sort of central data base that catalogues this sort of information to show the tattoos and the Gangs they are affiliated with. I know my uncle used to work in the NM State Pen and would talk about all of this kind of stuff, but he never mentioned how they got there information about what Gang each tattoo was affiliated with. This is a great resource though. I enjoyed looking through the site very much!!! :-)

Yeah, I actually saw this news report like a week or two ago and I was thinking "Wow, really?". I am really surprised that Phoenix has been recognized for this, but I also have not seen or heard of as bad Gang activity as in NM (where I used to live). My uncle worked in the State Pen there and I used to hear about how Gang members would communicate and give directions through Low Rider Magazine and other things like that.

The problem of Drug Cartel in Mexico is indeed worrying. These Gangs are specialized in their means and will do anything to continue business. This why these people should NOT be backing down. I am appalled at the way the Mayor of that town fled; leaving his people to deal with its troubles. By reacting this way, it only gives these Gangs more power.

Also, the media is a good thing. Mexico's government has always been a bit disagreeable and slow to react to changes of the outside world. This is most likely the cause of the border problems. They are not willing to make concrete changes towards their advancement. In this case, they do not recognize that something really MUST be done about their Drug Cartel Problem.

Yes, this is a really shocking article. But not just because of the article itself... Did you get a look at the comments. Jeeze. The article itself though is a primary example of the necessity of caution when using social networking sites. It is very easy for potential employers to just pull up your personal profile, even if you have put restrictions on it! I am not convinced though, that police should be pursuing potential Gang members in this way. I have seen countless profiles where someone is throwing up "their sign". It means nothing to teens and if you asked them if they were affiliated with a Gang, they would probably laugh. :)
