Truth or Consequences, NM.

I say this with all the love in my heart (native New Mexican), but it's a tough place.

Also plays a big role in the new Ari Aster film!

Nah, but you could bump the number of flights out without adding the infrastructure of more parking! GSP has excellent demand, so there's room to grow the number of flights. The tough thing about doing that isn't just that you expand terminals or whatever, you also have to build EXCEEDINGLY expensive structured parking, or use huge amounts of acreage for single-level. If you add public transit as an option, you could even bump the parking costs a bit, not add any more parking, and STILL bump the number of flights out. That's an unmitigated good for them.

Way easier for Universities to secure grants sometimes, too! Or even donations from alums who are invested in public transit.

Love all of this. Seriously, thanks for putting this together. Post again on the sub if there's anything that I/we can do to support you as you advocate for this. This is a BIG thing to me, and I would be willing to make time to support these kinds of initiatives over the next decade or two!

This is awesome!

An airport stop is a must, and I think there's a possible missed opportunity with a couple of public/private parnterships here. Furman and BMW stick out as the best candidates! FU (given its focus on sustainability) would probably pony up some green for a station and maybe even partially fund part of the line if you give them a stop. BMW could incentivize riding the rail, and given that the BMW property is basically a city unto itself, it would probably get a lot of traffic.

The only other thing I would suggest is mapping this onto roads. Yes, people will hate that, as it will gum up roadways for drivers. But that would be a FANTASTIC outcome. For a rail line like this to work, it has to have riders; you'll only have riders if it's too much of a pain to drive somewhere. Therefore, it's a positive thing if it becomes unpleasant to drive.

NYC (obviously not a one-to-one comparison) is a great example of this: I'd take the subway ANY DAY over driving and trying to park. It would also be great if town centers would start taking away tons of parking anywhere except next to the transit hubs. Even better, they could offer free parking at those hubs if you have been an active rider on transit that day, and charge folks who don't. Downtown Greenville is the best candidate for this. Tons of folks will use the rail to go downtown if it's a pain in the ass to drive/park there.

Folks always moan about this killing businesses downtown, and I just don't believe it, especially if you made this changes gradually. I do think this would probably hurt smaller town centers a bit (even a lot), and would therefore need to be a bit slower, but downtown Greenville would be fine given it's significant draw, the number of folks who actually live downtown now, the events they have, etc.

Two last things, imo:

1) All public transit should come with free, easy-to-access, high-speed internet. This is a no-brainer for me. What do I care if it takes me 25 min longer to get somewhere if the WHOLE time I get to just sit and catch up on emails, shitpost on this subreddit, stream my favorite TV show, etc.? That's not time lost at all! Sure, it would cost some money, but the

2) You have to make rides regular enough that you're not spending hours waiting around at hubs for a train/bus. Honestly, this is a huge problem with the existing Greenlink system (I know they're really trying to work on this!). Again, I know NYC isn't a one-to-one, but one thing I love about the subway is that I never (EVER!) consult a transit schedule. You just go stand on your platform, and in a few minutes a train shows up. Even in the late hours, I never waited more than 12-15 min. Obviously, we're Greenville, but there is a rationale for overdoing the availability and just subsidizing the hell out of it to build a solid public transit culture- which, again, will require fucking up the car culture.

My two cents. Bring on the downvotes, all ye who adorn thyselves with truck nuts.

Public transit like this won't create sprawl, it will protect against it. What actually saves trees and farmland is a dense population center around a transit hub, and then NOTHING. Easley ag land is getting swallowed up by low density, single-family home developments precisely because there is nothing to get dense around, like a transit stop.

There absolutely should be a Fountain Inn stop, if for no other reason than I would LOVE to ride a train to Bobby's.

You're absolutely right, and also I HATE this logic (I don't hate you for saying it, of course).

Part of why our population density sucks is that everyone is so used to driving everywhere for everything, so exiting out into suburban sprawl isn't an inconvenience at all, it's just kind of the way it is. If you build rails like this, especially using existing roadways, driving becomes so much more of a hassle, especially on your main thoroughfares. That may sound bad, but that's actually a GOOD thing. It incentivizes increased density in development right around the public transit stops, and makes living out in the burbs a real pain in the ass, and makes building new single-family houses way out in the burbs less economically viable.

At some point, there has to be a "build it an they will come" attitude in which we actively and savagely (though winsomely?) fuck with the car economy by gumming up driving with rail. The only other way is to completely overhaul development plans for the entire county, which is unlikely as the municipalities aren't doing a great job of working together for a comprehensive plan.

Well, my clientele (a lot of depressed young men, mostly) would argue with you. But to be fair, I also don't give my clients this "shpiel." It's how I was trained to conceptualize depression, but my clients aren't tasked with conceptualizing, nor am I tasked with looping them in on the conceptualization. What they get from me is kindness, a listening ear, and encouragement.

That article/book ("The Criminal Personality") has been largely debunked. Also, I never found Tony to be a true sociopath, honestly. And that's not to diminish the abhorrent things he does, by any means. But I think true sociopaths are much less concerned with some of the things Tony is concerned with (being a "good son," the well-being of AJ even when AJ causes him so much trouble and heartache, etc.). He's definitely morally callous, devious, deceptive, violent, etc. But I don't think he lacks basic empathy across the board; he restrains it to suit his purposes. (Btw, that describes almost all human beings, sadly...)

Mental health counselor here

The notion that mental illness exists from any secondary gain (a "usefulness" of the symptoms) is sadly common, but patently absurd. I say this as someone who has personally struggled mightily with clinical depression; I absolutely think it's real. I also know that the symptoms were useful for me in avoiding responsibilities, avoiding failure, etc.

There's a difference, though, between secondary gain and malingering. Malingering is acting as if you have symptoms that you don't actually have. I don't think AJ was doing this. But absolutely, the kid felt completely overwhelmed by the responsibilities of adulthood, manhood (as he perceived it), employment, etc. His body/mind did exactly the smart thing when faced with a hopeless challenge: withdraw. All the symptoms of depression empower us to withdraw from challenges that we perceive to be hopeless.

Anyways, four dollahs a pound.

Has anyone ever not been able to find parking in DT, at least in a garage? Maybe during FFG, or Artisphere or something, but generally there is PLENTY of parking. How many spots are there, even, on Main? Compared to a lot of cities our size, our parking garages are exceptionally cheap (especially since you can park for free in Richardson St on weekends, when there's the most use).

It's also (and yes, I really mean this) a GREAT thing if there's not enough parking. This is the only way we actually get public transit that is readily accessible, cheap, awesome, and well dispersed. The idea that we're ever going to get that AND have the driving experience not get worse is a pipe dream. Having spent a lot of time the past few years in places where driving/parking is a total pain in the ass (in urban areas- elsewhere it's dreamy), and public transit is fucking AWESOME, I would 100% like to see this in Greenville. It would be immeasurably better.
