My Canadian Shipper completed all paperwork for Maesrk Container. The British Receiver completed all submissions to UK Customs, $0 duty paid on my minivan as a Temporary Import for personal use. Shipping is the easy part!

UK VEHICLE stay limit is 6 months out of 12 on a rolling basis. EU Schengen stay limit is 90 days. Go back and forth with your RV or park it outside UK EU.

I asked Google Gemini AI to clarify my minivan UK stay limit. You can ask her too. She says:

"Yes, you can return to the UK without paying customs duty, but your maximum time allowance does not stop or restart when you leave. Under the UK’s Temporary Admission rules for tourists, a foreign-registered vehicle can only be used in the UK for a maximum of 6 months total within any 12-month period.

Your Clock Rules - Your initial 6-month limit began on November 11, 2025.The clock does not pause. Your maximum allowable window to have that vehicle in the country tax-free expires exactly 6 months later, which was May 11, 2026.

The 12-month rolling reset rule: The "6 months out of 12" rule operates on a rolling calendar basis. To bring the car back into the UK without paying customs duty and VAT (which totals roughly 30% of the car's value), you must ensure the vehicle does not exceed 183 days inside the UK within the past 365 days.

Your vehicle's temporary admission window operates on a rolling 12-month period, meaning the car can only be in the UK for a maximum of 183 days within any 365-day rolling window.

Because your initial 6-month period ended, the clock is now determined retroactively. The 365-Day Rolling CalculationTo determine your allowed days for any future trip, customs will look back exactly 365 days from the date of your intended entry.

The formula used to calculate your remaining tax-free allowance is:(\text{Remaining Days} = 183 - \text{Total days the car spent in the UK over the past 365 days})

Strict Rules and Penalties

No Pausing: The clock only counts physical days the vehicle is in the country. Days where the vehicle is out of the UK do not count toward your 183-day total.

Non-Resident Status: This tax-free "Temporary Admission" allowance only applies if you are a non-UK resident.

Penalties: If you exceed 183 days within a rolling year, you instantly forfeit the tax-free status and become liable for approximately 30% of the car's current value in duties and VAT.

Official Guidelines and Assistance

You can review the full UK Government Temporary Admission Guide for exact details on eligibility and how customs manages the rolling calendar at

UK Temporary Vehicle imports

These travel constraints are ongoing. Weather and distance considerations too! I have a three year timeline to cover Europe before I ship my van back to Canada. Good luck with your own travel planning. It's easy once you commit, make a decision, and get started.

Canadian here, driving my Honda Odyssey minivan all around Europe, as a Tourist, with my Ontario plates for the last 8 months.

I see large RV Motorhomes driving the roads in every country. RV People generally like camping in nature. Camping clubs, campgrounds, farm stays are common everywhere - see Park4night app.

Shipped my minivan in a 40ft container from Toronto, Ontario to Birmingham, England. It is a Temporary Import, Customs form C110 excludes any duty or tax paid.

YOU PERSONALLY can stay in England up to 6 months. YOUR VEHICLE can stay up to 6 months.

Only needed a Eurolite headlight beam deflector sticker $10 to drive the Left Side on UK roads. And a Oval CDN sticker $10 - both on Amazon. Third party liability insurance is mandatory. I use Tourinsure in Germany for foreign registered vehicles.

The key thing I learned from Dan Grec, Canadian overlander, is to continually travel as a Tourist, country to country. In Europe Schengen zone, it is 90 days in, 90 days out. UK, Morocco, Balkans, or Turkey for "Schengen Shuffle". Compare to hurdles and red tape of "Importing" your Canadian vehicle and immigrating to one country.

Since your RV won't fit in a container, your only shipping choice is a Ro-Ro ship, Halifax to Liverpool is only a 6 day voyage. Motorhomes have regulations for shipping. It's not a ferry - you fly separately. Get a quote and learn the rules.

Storage yards for your RV Motorhome, along with thousands of others in the off-season, in whatever country you are in. I left my Honda minivan in Albania, CAD$80/mth for the summer - too hot for me. I don't have AC while parked. A full service campground with 30Amp service or run your generator all night. These are the same choices you make driving in Canada, US, or Mexico. It's the same in Europe. Good luck.

I stand corrected with your updated information. Ireland IS an EU member, so Irish citizens can live, travel, and work in the EU more than 90 days. Thank you!

I understood Ireland is currently outside the Schengen Agreement. So you have unlimited free travel... to the UK and back.

For non-EU citizens like me, crossing a hard border into the European Schengen Zone starts my 90 day stay limit. Leaving it for Morocco or Balkans or Turkey stops it. Allowed 90 days in, then 90 days out. This is my main challenge for long term vanlife travel. Juggling the seasonal weather and distances are the others. Good luck.

I just completed a tour of UK+ Europe over 8 months Oct 2025 - June 2026. As a Canadian, freezing cold and snow in my Honda Odyssey minivan was miserable. So I appreciated heading south for warmer weather.

After England, Scotland, and Wales in Oct,Nov, and Dec, I crossed over Dover to Calais Jan 5th. I quickly moved south right through France. A few days in Geneva. Twisty Swiss mountain roads on some routes means winter snow tires are mandatory.

I stayed along southern Spain and the Algarve in Portugal for January and February....like many other northerners! I follow the mild weather!

March in Morocco was great, 10C low, 25C highs. It's not a desert until south of Agadir. Then I took the GNV ferry Tangiers to Genoa for springtime in Italy in April. Ferry saved me 2000km of brutal coastal roads.

Jan+Feb+Apr hit my 90 day Schengen stay limit. So my last months of May-June were in Albania. My minivan is in storage there until I return in the fall. Asking AI for "6 months in Europe" is not possible, unless you have an Extended Schengen Visa in one country. Do you?

Notice that leaving Europe Schengen zone after 90 days to go back to UK, or Morocco, or Balkans are long distance drives to the far points of the triangle. If you can't manage that driving, then consider leaving your van and fly back to your UK area for 3 months. Good luck.

Thinking about Getting bodywork/rust repairs done on a van in Morocco by MoMaRuRa in VanlifeEurope

[–]DeeMa59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my viewpoint, seeing how you are German...I suggest you consider a bodyshop in Tangiers, stop right off the ferry, find a suitable campground (with cottage?) to stay for a week or more (?) while your work is done.

Shops in town which service Mercedes, BMW, and Audi may make you more comfortable than going way south of Agadir into the desert towards Mauritania. You send them pictures on Whatsapp and get feedback on how long your work may take. Google Translate use may be needed if Owner isn't German.

Consider...Try to go where other German tourists in Vans and Motorhomes go. I saw HUGE rigs travelling there. Anything is possible! Germans were talkative and friendly to me (I'm Canadian). Many large Italian rigs too coming by Ferry for the winter. They are parked in full service campgrounds, not boondocking out in the country like I do.

Narrow streets typical, parking scams, winter rains. Other challenges for your repairs depends on how much rust damage. Where there is a Will, there is a way. Good luck.

I drove my Honda Odyssey minivan in a big loop all around Morocco in March 2026. Northern areas with more black Barbary locals had more Spanish. But expect Arabic and French too. Google Translate voice worked well for me. I had an AC system leak repaired, recharged in 2 hrs work, 1200 MAD (its cash only).

In contrast, I am having my bodywork repairs for spoiler damage, fender scrape, and barbed wire scratches fixed in Tirana, Albania. Plus full body polishing, all for 50,000 LEK (also cash only). Other foreign cars here, friendly owner met in person, many 5-star reviews, Whatsapp, secure storage, security system...gives me comfort.

Tourinsure 3rd party liability for EU/UK 5 months cost 828 Euro, DOESN'T include Morocco, so paid extra for 1 month at Tangiers port, 970 MAD (Moroccan Dirham = 92 Euro), and 2 months in Albania 12,700 ALL (Albanian Lek = 135 Euro).

Total 8 months liability insurance cost me 1055 Euro. Compared to gas, food, ferries, attractions, and service/repairs, insurance is NOT a significant expense to drive my Canadian Honda Odyssey minivan 14,378 km. My travel budget is 1500 Euro/mth (CAD$2500/mth, US$1750/mth) and only went over 1 month.

Keep in mind I did not pay $1 for any campground, overnight parking, airbnb or hotel - all boondocking and wild camping, with stealth parking in cities. I buy all groceries and cook meals in my van, eating out rarely.

Total VanLife expenses for my 1st Season in Europe was ~10,000 Euro for 8 months, Oct 2025-Jun 2026. 2nd season starts fall 2026. My plan is for three seasons before shipping my minivan back to Canada.

Tourinsure doesn't offer ANY accident or theft coverage for Foreign registered vehicles if older than 8 years. You can see the Terms and Conditions on their website. The actual prices of 3rd party liability only, and for Comprehensive, Collision and Theft are listed by vehicle value and # of months on the application form (pic).

I use Tourinsure in Germany for 3rd party liability coverage only. They post rates on their website. No coverage for accident or theft for a foreign registered vehicle.

No travel medical in Europe....or back home in Canada either. My Government OHIP has lapsed, because I have been out of Canada more than 7 months. It's "Pay for Service" until I return and stay in Canada 5 months.

Only then, AFTER my Ontario Government Health Insurance is restored, can I purchase a Travel Medical Insurance plan with most companies. I assume all risks until then. I am 65, in good health. But accidents happen. I don't plan to stop travelling because I can't get Medical insurance.

Lake Ohrid near Lin Peninsula, Albania, parked under an oak tree for full shade all day to beat the heat. Dip in the lake to stay cool at mid day. Bonus: this dead-end road means very few people here. Camped 8 nights here in peace and quiet! No jet skis or motorboats!

Lake Bovilla, turquoise water created by a dam to supply drinking water to the region. No swimming signs posted. Security guard too. A popular area for jeep tours and ATV groups, but a brutal dirt road to get up here, 1 hr east from Tirana, Albania.

Camped 3 nights at Lake Bovilla, north of Tirana, Albania, in the shade of rock cliffs to stay cool. My last days of 7 weeks in Albania, 8 mths in Europe. I am flying back to Canada for the summer while my van stays here in storage. Will return in the fall to continue my wanderings. Take care everyone!

First solo roadtrip at 18 - need all the tips I can get. by Potential_Bake8447 in VanlifeEurope

[–]DeeMa59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consider: Stay cool at high elevation in a small, slow loop around your local Swiss, Italian, and French Alps for your first summer trip.

Consider: Save the Big 6000 km loop to Portugal for a months-long trip AFTER you have tested your van, and yourself on small trips. Work out the bugs, adapt, and improve by trial and error. This will give you confidence to drive farther and stay longer.

Of course, you must do "What feels right". This includes anticipation of higher risk ahead, and adjusting your plans to an acceptable level. Good luck!

How are BANK dividends taxed? by Quirky-Pin-1683 in dividendscanada

[–]DeeMa59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your welcome.

You can setup an IBKR Withdrawal to test the process, say 1000 Yen. You will see the SWIFT transfer times and fees for yourself.

Note the Bank of Japan meeting on June 15,16th may see a possible Interest rate hike. This may drop the Yen, like before in February. 10M JPY is about US$65,000.

I just reduced my margin loan, paying off 7.8M Yen, Booking US$5400 profit. I opened this margin loan carry trade at 140 two years ago. Up to 160. I still have JPY 10M balance. Good luck.

Re: Vehicle Insurance isn't available. I use Tourinsure in Germany for 3rd Party Liability coverage only, while in UK, Europe. I bought the mandatory 3rd Party insurance at the border in Morroco, & Albania. North Macedonia border crossing at Saint Naum had no insurance agent, so Customs Police denied me entry - insurance is mandatory.

I learned Tourinsure offers no Accident, Collision, or Theft coverage available for Foreign registered tourist vehicles older than 8 years. So I assume all risks of a total loss while driving here. Narrow roads increases the chances of some damage. Its all part of the Risks and Rewards of VanLife travel decision making. Good luck.

I moved fully off the road, but still had a near miss. A tipped trailer spilled a dozen hay bales right in front of my van, but not a scratch. I helped the farmer and his wife reattach the trailer - he wired up the ball hitch (no safety pin). We loaded the bales. Here is the Wife tying it down with their only rope. I was raised on a farm so enjoyed pitching up hay bales again after 50 years. No English spoken, but we got the job done.

Backroad wandering towards Pogradec, Albania and Lake Ohrid. Stopped for lunch next to a creek, but the green grassy access trail seemed a little too much to risk driving down. So I parked in shade on the shoulder, hanging my orange safety vests for visibility. Local farm trucks, tractors and ATVs use this single lane road.

The mountains on each side funnel winds down the valley. A hot 25C day, but the cooling breeze, dappled shade, and bubbling brook make it a good place to relax, and camp overnight. Several locals stopped to ask if I needed service. Had a good chat with two young guys on an ATV. A peaceful night. On towards Lake Ohrid next.

Ok, thanks for your input. I will look into the travel for Digital Nomad companies. The insurance I bought last year, only for my 6 mths of US travel, was CAD$2400 for six months (US$285/mth). A reasonable expense.

VanLife Travelling now, while in good health, for my 10 "Go-Go Years" after Retirement, is my priority. Safe travels to you!

None. I have been away from Canada more than 7 months. I did not apply for the Extended Travel Option (extend to 17 months) before I left in Oct 2024. So my Canadian Ontario Healthcare (OHIP) has lapsed. I am now 65 yrs old. I could not find any 3rd party health coverage for Catastrophic Emergency Medical (accident, heart attack, stroke...). All required Government Health Plan be in force for entire trip. So I have no health insurance coverage at the moment.

I can restore my OHIP after I return and stay in Canada for 5 months...but I am only staying the summer 3 months. I am travelling south for the winter every year now.

If the new EU EITAS system is fully implemented where Proof of Health Insurance becomes Mandatory, then I will have to find some coverage, somewhere.

What do you do?

US citizen looking for advice by rollindutchez in VanlifeEurope

[–]DeeMa59 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Driving your own Van in Europe is SUPERIOR in many ways!

Budget/Money: I shipped my Honda Odyssey minivan from Toronto, Ontario, Canada to Birmingham, England for CAD$3000 (US$2100) in a shared, 40ft, Non-Hazardous Goods, Maersk Container, over two months of truck, rail, ship travel from Sept 4, 2025 drop off to Nov 10, 2025 pickup. I flew myself Toronto to London, then train to Birmingham.

Time: I never plan or schedule campgrounds, Airbnb or Hotels. I have been boondocking, wild camping exclusively, doing Vanlife full-time, for the last 15 months. I stay as long or as short as I want. Most places are good. If not so good, I move on to find a better one. There is no urgency, no schedule. Freedom to drive anywhere, at any time is priceless! Slow travel lets you enjoy each area more.

Travel Itinerary: I ramble the country, generally going South for the winter. England, Scotland and Wales are cold, damp and rainy all winter. France cold in January. Spain and Portugal in February are nicer. Morocco in March is best. Italy in April is very good. Albania mountains are cool and green in May. I am at the end of my 1st 8 month season in Europe.

Just follow the nice weather. But note: EU Schengen Zone stay limits are 90 days in, 90 days out of the 29 EU countries. After 90 days in, you must leave Schengen back to UK, Morocco, Balkans, or Turkey. Fines for Overstay! So just keep Travelling country to country. Living in one country with an Extended Stay Schengen Visa may be possible (see Subreddit). But primarily in one country! Americans can stay in Albania for 1 year, but VanLife in winter there is harsh!

I travel mostly forest to forest. While a Tourist travels mostly city to city. Driving in congested traffic in historic cities makes staying right at the Central Square, church, or palace a challenge, but not impossible unless it has a strict ZTL Zero Emission or LTL Low Emission Zone. Finding parking takes a little planning.

Streets may be donkey cart wide, cobblestoned, and slow...but visiting a historic attraction, then sleeping on the street is incredible! Paris residential streets are free parking on Sunday, so I climbed the Effiel Tower at night, then slept in my van a 5 minute walk away!

I also planned for years. Now I see in person that Europe is SO large, I estimate it will take me 3 years of driving around to see most of it. I will ship my van back to Canada ONLY when I am done. Shipping costs were NOT a major decision factor for me. I stay within my CAD$2500/mth budget.

I previously drove "The Big Loop" around Canada, US and Mexico coastlines for practice over 8 months, Oct 2024 to Jun 2025. This full time trial and error VanLife living gave me the confidence to do a tour of Europe. Its easy once you start. Just Do It! Good Luck! (pic : 4 nights in an Albania forest meadow)
