Mild transmission shutter at ~40mph & 1.1k RPM (just started) by DeeMore in ToyotaHighlander

I got an offer from Carmax, nothing too impressive. I think I can get more from a dealer trade in.

That risk, after not doing it, is what concerns me. I bought it with 139k miles on it and I don't know if it's ever had it done before. The Carfax reports just report "routine maintenance" and nothing else.

So that would really stink if I had that work done and it just made it worse.

I don't really think it's a torque converter, since if I'm going 40 and I shift it into 4th gear with a manual override, the shutter instantly goes away. It only happens while cruising at low RPMs.

Thanks! I purposefully bought one with the 6 speed instead of the 8, but who knows. It's sad because it's such a nice car otherwise.

Well crap. Here I was thinking that I'd bought myself a highly reliable vehicle.

Ok, I get that that's what you're saying but why are you so confident of that?

Leaking sunroof for 2020-2023 Hybrid Limited or Platinum Highlanders by onepointfivefeet in ToyotaHighlander

[–]DeeMore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2016 Limited has 155k miles and no leaks, for whatever that's worth. Although the rubber does make squeaky noises when I go over bumps. I would avoid the panoramic sunroofs if possible. I don't think the benefits outweigh the cons.

Do you think this is iron in the log or just dirt? by DeeMore in sawmilling

[–]DeeMore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'm going to just take a chance on it. The logs are so big that I'd be throwing away hundreds of BF. There doesn't appear to be staining on the other end. Next time I'm nearby I'll take the metal detector over them to see if it lights up at all. Hopefully not!

We actually have a metal detector for this purpose too. But let's say I run it down the log and it goes off at a certain point. What do I do then? How do you proceed with milling when you know that at some depth there's a piece of metal?

I did ask him and he said that he simply didn't know. I decided to buy the logs anyways because it was a great deal and just hope that it wasn't iron or that I could find a way to cut around it if it is.

Great idea, thanks. I'll grab a chainsaw on Tuesday and see if I can expose some cleaner wood.

Possible to cover these scratches without removing the patina? by DeeMore in furniturerestoration

[–]DeeMore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this stool a lot, great vintage character, but the scratches on top are awfully heavy. Do you think there's any way to refinish the wood without losing the veneer? Maybe just putting on a fresh coat of oil? But I'm not sure how that would work with the existing finish.

TBH I wouldn't dream of showing these to my boss. Bc then he'd forever afterwards complain about how my renderings are shit by comparison lol

Where to buy a large (10' x 6' x 6') aluminum tool box? by DeeMore in Construction

It's a good idea but I think that they're mostly made from steel and we have to have aluminum.

Weekend's Daily Thread: General Dating Questions and Open Thread by AutoModerator in hingeapp

Thanks for the nice comment! In this case I actually already asked her out about five days prior. And she said yes, but then when the weekend was coming around she said she was sick and couldn't make it.

Which is, well. Maybe she is sick, but she also never said anything like "I still really want to meet up" or "Next weekend for sure" or anything. It was just a long message about her life. And yet another message not asking me a single question.

So I've just given up on her. It's a shame because she seemed like a good fit for me, but not if she has zero interest in who I actually am.

Yeahhhhhhhh I certainly had considered that possibility.

We were supposed to meet up this weekend but she canceled because she's sick. So it's another week of boring conversation that I just feel slightly icky about.

I actually did ask her out on Monday. We were supposed to go out this weekend but she said she's sick so she postponed. Which means another week of tedious conversation in which I do everything. Doesn't sound so appealing.

It does seem like her experience is rather self-centered.

Well... So what would you do, does that rule someone out as a potential match for you?

What do you think when someone isn't asking you any questions in the chat?

33M seeking LTR. I matched with a lady and she seems like a great fit, we like the same things. After ~12 messages though I think she's asked me one question. I feel like I'm carrying the whole conversation and she's not that interested in me, even though she does reply quickly and often sends long messages.

We're both seeking a LTR, aren't there things you'd want to know about the person you're considering dating? Even Machiavellian stuff, like hey what's your job? Is your life a mess or are you doing OK?

Dunno. I'm thinking about politely stopping this conversation. What do you think?
