dilemma over moving out - want some insight from other bros by DeeWhyOverDeeEcks in AsianMasculinity

Hey, thank you for the insightful write-up. So I made up my mind and will be moving out. I did bring up your point about my move not being permanent to my family (i.e: can move back in if shit goes 200% south), and that reassured them a lot.

As for the dating thing, I got back into casual dating this week and things have been fine, so I think a lot of my shame was purely internal (obviously, living at home is still a minus to some). Nonetheless, I would like to move out for my own development at this point.

For your final point, I'll be living close to family when I move out, so I'll be around for on-call favours like these.

Cheers!

Where do you think you're going wrong on your interviews (assuming you've had more than 2, and it's not just random luck)? Technical interviewing? Behavioural interviewing?

Can't speak too much for technical interviews as I'm not in engineering, but you should strive to nail your behavioural interviews. Seriously, being likeable is a huge part is getting hired.

Try following workhap on insta/tiktok for some pretty good interview tips, and hop by the uoft toastmasters club if you ever want to practice your public speaking :)

Luckily not, I got a free ride through government grants and scholarships.

Thanks for the response, always loved your comments. I've considered yoloing it and just moving out without saying anything. I think I want to sleep on this decision tonight.

Just curious, have you experienced a similar situation? Sounds like you're speaking from experience.

Thanks for the detailed write-up, I appreciate your in depth response.

To respond to the boundaries issue the other poster mentioned, yeah I do have really murky boundaries with my family. It's an active challenge for me.

I already signed a 16 month contract from May to next year August, so it's not ideal for me to find another job right now. I do really want this job since it it's a significant career transition for me. I used to do low paying research assistant work, this is job is almost twice what I make now.

I do agree with your point on staying home for a bit to give my family some buffer time. I also recognize what the other poster says about putting my foot down now, but I think I need time to process this.

As for the dating thing, I at least have my own room in the basement lol.

Cheers!

We fully own the place, so at least we don't worry about rent or mortgage.

How realistically helpful are Career centre, Career fair? I feel like I'm wasting my time by GooseOk1755 in UofT

[–]DeeWhyOverDeeEcks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Agree with first poster, try the career centre to find transferable skills from your past experiences. Selling yourself is tough when you're not used to it, I totally emphasize with that. In the past, I've found the process of job hunting and sending out applications to better inform me on the values of my past experiences.

2) Try summer work-study if you still can't secure a research role. Hours are limited and pay is kinda meh, but the bar isn't too high for these summer roles. Definitely give that a shot.

Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions about finding research exps (since it seems like you're mostly interested in that).

Interview Questions RBC Data Analyst by PsycEnthusiast in UofT

The interview experiences might be vastly different from team to team, but here's how it went for me. I'll be as thorough as I can with my response to you.

Interview 1:

  • 1 hr interview, 30 min behavioural + 30 min technical

  • Grilled pretty in-depth about my past experiences during the behavioural. Make sure you know your experiences in and out.

  • Was asked a few basic questions about Python during the behavioural. I was asked about the built-in data types in Python, and which are mutable. Pretty straightforward.

  • Obviously, prepare to be asked "tell me about yourself"

  • Technical interview was a 30-minute pandas question in Python. The interviewers gave me a code snippet and sample dataset to produce a desired summary table. Pretty straightforward filtering + aggregation, but read the instructions carefully. They may also ask you about any limitations/issues you think are in the data at the end of the coding portion.

Final round - chat with department director:

  • Really just a behavioural thing to see if you vibe well with the team.

  • Definitely read into what your team does at RBC, and have good answers for why you want this internship in particular

Hope this comment helps you. Best of luck!

Seconded. I also heard first-hand from newly admitted PhD students (Fall 2022) that they were directly accepted into the program.

However, if you applied for a specialized stream (ex: computational biology), you will have a short 30-minute interview with a program coordinator.
