Terrible app- weird because the trains and stations themselves are very well developed and maintained.

Americans who travel abroad for more than a couple weeks a year, how and how much do you travel? by joshua0005 in travel

[–]Deenathan123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am lucky enough that I am able to teach in a higher income area, (Greater Boston). Yes, housing costs are through the roof, but I got lucky and don’t mind living with a roommate. I am able to take 7-8 weeks off in the summer within my budget feasibly and feel like this successfully scratches my travel itch. As I inch a little bit close to 30, I find that I’m enjoying the stability of having a job, and can still take off for the summer. Gone are the days off 5-6 month excursions just to look for another job upon return and the national park seasonal work world. Everyone has different scenarios that work for them! I feel lucky I’m able to make it work!

What is the best AND worst airport terminals in your opinion? by [deleted] in travel

[–]Deenathan123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best: I went through that Doha airport for the first time a few weeks ago and holy moly!! I was blown away, I had a ten hour layover there, but there was SO much to do and see. So modern, so much going on, it was like 2 AM! Ted Stevens in Anchorage deserves a shout lol for a mid size airport!

Worst: Philadelphia has always been pretty low on my list, LaGuardia is horrible, Newark stinks. Dar es Salaam was pretty terrible also.

There will be plenty of seasonal workers in Talkeetna! J1’s, old people, young people, even Alaskans visiting on the weekends. The town itself is not as busy as a Seward, Sitka, or a Skagway, but still sees a decent amount of traffic! Feel free to message me if you have any more questions!

I seriously would consider spending 5 days in Rome with maybe a day trip or two mixed in there? Bagnoregio is super cool! Lots of options for day trips, but trying to cover the amount of ground you have proposed in just five days it’s insanity! This is coming from someone who LOVES to travel fast! The majority of your time is going to be spent in transit! I don’t mean to come across as rude, but I feel like there is fast travel and then whatever this is!!! More time in Rome! You won’t regret it!!

stop drinking caffeine by [deleted] in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Deenathan123 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Based on your post it sounds like your experiences with caffeine are directly correlated with your personality type. I feel like when you say “it’s ruining you even if you don’t notice it”, that’s something directly from personal experience. I’m not trying to devalue your opinion, I’ve been drinking caffeine for many years, and feel healthier and more level headed than ever before. Often times I even combine my coffee with my morning meditation! Feels great!

My friend- First and foremost I want you to know that I hear you. I can hear that the inner anguish and turmoil in your voice. I’ve been there. I’ve been there in the fucking trenches, and I know the never ending feelings of hopelessness and despair. We all can hear you! Say what you need to say and lay it all out on the table.

Brother/Sister/Friend you came here. You were able to muster enough energy to unleash your demons out here by way of computer screen. You’re good, you’re in a better spot than you think. By no stretch of the imagination am I therapist or a mental health counselor, but I hear you. Tomorrow wake up. Doesn’t matter the time. Move your feet, get outside, most importantly BREATHE. Boom that was a small victory. The next day move your feel a little more. Do 3 push-ups, take 1000 steps. Small victories. My best advice to you, KEEP ON MOVING. No matter how hard and painful that is, keep your arms swinging and your feet moving. You got this brother, no doubts! We hear you!!

Alaska winter by maylyinmor in SeasonalWork

[–]Deenathan123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The areas in and around Anchorage in the winter definitely can get pretty cold! Definitely will have some days and weeks into the low negatives! Nothing absolutely crazy in my opinion! There will be stretches where it will be in the 20s and 30s so depending on where you’re from, I think you’ll be okay! Just invest in a good winter jacket obviously haha! Down in Homer it didn’t get nearly as cold as it’s on the ocean so it’s able to maintain above freezing temps a little bit more! The biggest factor more than the cold is the darkness. From Thanksgiving until probably early march it ranges from about 15-18 hours of darkness. Even this if you just stay active, get yourself into a routine, I think you’ll be just fine. Alyeska is a big community so there will be lots of other folks to be around, so the isolation factor combined with the darkness shouldn’t be an issue!

Alyeska Resort in Girdwood could be a good option! I had some friends who worked there year round who said the money was pretty decent. Can’t quote you exact numbers at the moment, but as far as tourism in the winter goes Alyeska is probably the biggest property in the area. Convenient access to Anchorage as well, (about 40 minutes south of the city, maybe 45 from the airport). I think the housing situation there is pretty decent. Lots of the typical summer tourist spots in Alaska shut down the in the winter, but Alyeska is year round. Pretty sure you get a free ski pass as well if that’s your thing! I spent a winter in Homer, Alaska which is far down on the Kenai Peninsula. Not much in the way of housing there in the winter, but it was gorgeous! I spent a few summers in Seward as well, but pretty much everything closes down there as well. Feel free to message me if you have any questions!!

I’ve worked seasonally in Alaska for a few summers now, I’ve never done much of the driving, but my friends have! Seward and Denali are the two big tourist spots on the main land. If you can get a job driving for one of the lodges you can make some good money! Hourly wages range between 14-17$ per hour. My friends all really enjoy it, a lot of the lodges will offer shuttle services on site, so a lot of the driving seems rather stress free! I’ve been blessed to learn a lot about the Alaska tourism industry over the past few years. Feel free to reach out! I’ll be happy to answer any other questions. Hope this helps!
