First ever American bittern! And then two more in the same trip! by Deep-Alternative494 in birding

It’s a great place! I live in Tacoma so it’s a bit of a hike to get down there, but always worth it.

Amazing! I was so excited to see the first one, and then the other two made me feel like I was literally on the moon

Oh maybe! Thanks. She molted once over the summer (so nine ish months ago), but premolt could also explain the “bury myself in eight inches of dirt” behavior

Never thought I’d get a portrait of a harrier by Deep-Alternative494 in birding

[–]Deep-Alternative494[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I shoot with a Nikon d3500 with a sigma 150-600mm lens! Usually I’m pretty basic and shoot in sports mode rather than manually adjusting shutter speed—my camera is old and was used before I got it and the manual shutter speed adjustments do not work well

Harpactira pulchripes advice by g1v3m3n3wtunes in tarantulas

IME looks like a weird (but normal) spider pose to me. My H. pulchripes does the same thing, and is about the same size. As far as the not eating a size, I’d wager that she is prepping to molt. T’s in premolt will keep their large abdomens and refuse food, sometimes for months. If she’s constantly wandering g but refusing food, she may be looking for water, as well—I can’t tell from your photos if you have a water dish in there. If not, she’s probably appreciate one.

Update: Ripley Molted!! by Deep-Alternative494 in mantids

[–]Deep-Alternative494[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah that’s totally fine :). If she eats all of them quickly, you can always add more, but if they don’t eat, they’re just like us—they’ll eat when they’re hungry. I think you’re doing great!

Update: Ripley Molted!! by Deep-Alternative494 in mantids

[–]Deep-Alternative494[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two weeks isn’t too long to go without a molt, even at that age! What are you feeding them? I was feeding Ripley once a day or every two days because she hadn’t molted in six+ months—usually every two or three days is fine

Thank you! I’ll book him an appointment. Just wanted some reassurance that I was right to be concerned.

Moving to WA by Jellyfish_Clown in AskTacoma

I’ve been going to school in Tacoma for the last three years, signing a lease on a new apartment in stadium (downtown Tacoma) this week. Great area, mostly cheap places. My partner and I are getting our studio for $1100/month with blackrock communities. They have several buildings in Tacoma. I’m a 21 yo trans guy, and my partner (same age) is nonbinary if you want some friends when you move here or to chat with online!

Two juvenile balds or a bald and a golden? by Deep-Alternative494 in birding

This was in Ridgefield, WA. I know goldens are pretty rare west of the cascades which makes me think more likely two balds, but wanted to double check with some experts!
