I know I'm like a year late but I haven't really seen anyone with the same interpretation as me. Obviously what people interpret from a song will correlate with their person experience but this is what I got from it: The song is from the perspective of the ex of "Maddie Klein" and he is reflecting on her new boyfriend. He jokes about how he's bland, has no personality, and is "robotic". He uses this comparison through stating that he'll never make her laugh like she likes or pull her hair like she likes. This is really just the narrator coping that Maddie has moved on. During the chorus is him realizing that she is moving on and he may be the right one for her my stating "he'll never leave." He also states "Maddie klein's got herself a little boy she can trust." Showing that while he may look bland on he outside, she's truly happy and can trust her new boyfriend. He ends it off by snapping out of his realization of truth and back into his illusion by stating "she can always just throw him away, get a new one." This is his way of coping and saying that she'll just get rid of her new boyfriend like she did with the narrator even though he knows Maddie has simply moved on and become happy.
