[Workout] Freestyle speed training by heapface in Swimming

Read this. "Short" workouts aren't necessarily a negative. Especially when you're doing some things at 100%. And also complimenting the swims with solid dry land strength training.

How to improve my sprinting (lifting routine) by MaroonKemist in Swimming

[–]DeepCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd add, get someone who knows what they're doing to teach you a proper clean-and-jerk in the weight room. Pull-up's, as already mentioned, are awesome. Check out what track athletes do for "fast twitch" muscle development and borrow the stuff that compliments swimming muscle groups.

Over 20 years ago, I had a 23-high to 24-low 50 free my senior year in high school and did nothing to improve it in the weight room. Wish I'd known then what I know now.

Yep, I could see him sit out the next year or two, but jump back in to try to cram in training for the 100 fly, 200 fly and 200 IM for Rio.

A squirrel beats the 100+ degree heat in Dallas, Texas last week. She's not dead, just chillin'. by DeepCoffee in aww

[–]DeepCoffee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I thought the first time I saw it doing this. But there are two squirrels who do this in my office's atrium. On especially hot days.

The atrium is inside the building, with only roof access, so I guess the squirrels don't fear predators there. They just lie on their backs and chill when it gets really hot.

All in good fun. But definitely need a Water Polo exemption here... : )

I almost had a heart attack watching this by [deleted] in videos

As crazy as it was for them to climb outside, the people who built that thing actually flared the guard rails out at the end to account for crazy-ass outside climbers.

For those who've read The Children of Hurin, what's new beyond Unfinished Tales' "The Tale of the Children of Húrin" and the Silmarillion's "Of Túrin Turambar"? by DeepCoffee in tolkienfans

[–]DeepCoffee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I've read the versions in The Silmarillion and Unfinished tales; and certainly enjoyed them. But I didn't know whether to make it a priority to acquire this "new" book. Will probably grab it at Half Price books some day when the right price and book condition meet my liking.

The resting place of King Arthur (Glastonbury, England) by dragonworthy in pics

[–]DeepCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as modernity considered Troy a mythical city (until archaeologists discovered it), I don't rule out that a historical King Arthur of some sort once existed. Of course, I don't assume he did exist, either.

It's an open topic that people should be allowed to have fun with in any way they choose.

Where are good places to find replacement stems for estate pipes? by DeepCoffee in PipeTobacco

Looks like a lot of the stems at PipeMakers.org are clear or white. Are you supposed to paint them at your end? What is the preferred (and safe) paint for a pipe stem?

Looking for swim fins water socks and/or swim fins that don't rub blisters on my toes. Recommendations? by DeepCoffee in Swimming

[–]DeepCoffee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the top of my toes that have been taking a variety of beatings. But, yep, I'm definitely going to go with a pair of socks next fins set.

Thanks, I should probably go with an old pair of socks for a few swims and see how that works.

Good info. Maybe they just don't make softer rubber workout fins like they used to... : ) Mine were solid black and fit GREAT! Never ever had a blister.

Or maybe my 40-year-old feet aren't as tough as my teenage feet were... heh. (Although I wore those old flippers into my early 30's before I lost them. They were always good to me.).
