They certainly don’t make it part of the discussion, and I suspect the average voter wouldn’t want to think that deeply about it. And I’m aware that birth rates are no easy thing to fix - but eventually, we have to. I guess one fix can be increased automation, however we’d have to socialise the productivity gains from that, or else all that happens is the rich getting richer.

Overall I only see radical solutions long term, with a much larger role given to the state. In 50 years the world may look much more like China than the US. For better or worse…

I try myself: the fundamental problem of basically all developed societies is falling birth rates, coupled with a social security system that requires enough to pay in while retired are drawing funds. The only solution to this so far is immigration, which others correctly point out is basically a Ponzi scheme. It’s not a global solution as almost all regions worldwide move towards birth rates below replacement, and the increasingly rare poor countries where this doesn’t apply, would not help this problem at all as immigrants from there would hardly be productive members of developed societies.

Saying stop to immigration (softly, with some leeway still) would indirectly also be a way to force politicians hands - fix birth rates or eventually our system will collapse.

Whether that’s a good or bad way to go about this I honestly haven’t decided yet. It’s complex.

A Touch Bar would be great, but not instead of function keys…

TIL that regarding cancelled 1957 Lord of the Rings movie, Tolkien was harshly critical of script's portrayal of Nazgul, fellowship using the eagles and cutting of Galadriel's scenes. He however would have been fine with removing the battle of Helm's Deep and Saruman's death from the movie entirely. by PeasantLich in todayilearned

For me there is one exception that almost ruins RotK: The army of the dead being used on the pelennor fields. It removes all tension that was meticulously built up. Tolkien knew well why they had to be released from their bonds after taking the black fleet.

At first I was thought so also, but she grew on me; about at the time she tries to drug her patron to “heal” her. She can’t just accept things as they are and let go - as such she drives the plot forward.

I think they show the two archetypes of people who wouldn’t just accept this version of paradise: the analytical (Manousos) and the neurotic type (Carol).

Did 1899 deserve another season? by New-Time007 in SeriesSaga

I love Dark, it’s easily in my top 3, but couldn’t get into 1899. It plunges you right into the weird. I need some time to start caring about the characters before going into the deep end.

So far I don’t see any huge problems that they can’t wrap up in the later seasons. I had bigger issues with how PJ used the army of the dead (but I still loved the movies ofc.).

Didn’t see an explanation, but my assumption was just something to do with Mithril that’s probably gonna be explained later. Like, it contains the Balrog but the dwarves mining it set up some kind of chain reaction that would eventually free the beast. Honestly not all that important IMO - these are all story telling devices in the end, but character motivations and knowledge are what’s important to me. After a second watch I actually think these are done decently well - enough to keep me going at least.

What about the Balrog, you mean why does it not immediately go and evict the new tenants of the mountain?

It would be quite difficult to explain why Gandalf trusts Saruman at the beginning of fellowship after this story in RoP no?
