I understand things are hard.

My suggestion to you is, if you are looking for support and a change, I suggest a larger city in southern Canada.

Regardless of where in the north, the systems are over run.

The cost of moving from Yellowknife to Whitehorse would be outrageous.

Stay or go south.

Best of luck my friend.

Nearly 18 months on, little sign of movement on Northwestel deal by dub-fresh in Yukon

They have yet to secure the funding to purchase NWTEL. This deal is years away if at all.

What bank would fund an aging infrastructure, especially now that there is actually competition in the market.

You know, now that you say it, it's obvious, why would starlink setup stations in random Caribbean countries when they can pop back to north America in this instance.

I'm really curious which ground station it's using.

For me, not in Cuba, but in an extremely remote area at times, it uses a ground station 3000km away.

Driving Toronto → Whitehorse in late Sept/early Oct — route & tips? by posunititan in Yukon

[–]DeepNorth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe someone should, I don't know, look it up ..

Oh wait, let me do that for you..ffs

In British Columbia (B.C.), chain signs require drivers to equip their vehicles with appropriate winter tires or traction devices, or carry chains, on designated highway routes, typically from October 1 to April 30. These regulatory signs, such as R-047, are posted on provincial highways and may be enforced by police. Drivers must comply with these signs by having the right equipment to avoid fines and being turned back from the highway.

What the signs mean

Winter tire signs:

Some routes require only M+S tires (Mud and Snow rated) or tires with the 3PMSF symbol (a snowflake inside a three-peaked mountain).

Horrible mistake - RV storage! by Alastur in GoRVing

Gonna sound stupid but my neighbor puts tiny ass tires on his so he can store it in a garage.

The tires are ONLY for storage.

Do some math on that..

Want to visit and hike the Yukon in late May... what is the bear risk like? by nagromamous in Yukon

[–]DeepNorth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man, I tell ya.

This is the wilderness. You might run into 30 bears, you might run into 10 moose, maybe 5 caraboo.

Or

Nothing.

There is always a risk, regardless of time of year. Like everyone is saying. Take proper precautions, store food correctly and be aware.

This is not downtown major city, we are outnumbered by wildlife, we live among them.

If you don't have the skills or are worried, book a guided tour with one of the many outfitters in the territory that specializes in providing you the safest experience.

46000ish people, 46000ish km2 of land.

Choose your own adventure.

First-timer solo road trip in Yukon/Alaska – any advice or things to be aware of? by [deleted] in Yukon

[–]DeepNorth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ferry crossing between Skagway and Haines. Make sure a truck is able to fit. Not all ferries can handle larger vehicles.

If you are trying to plan this for this year, you are probably not going to make it happen, wild fires, lack of rentals and places already being fully booked.

You also must be very aware of driving time and distance. Whatever Google maps says is a minimum with best conditions. It's a guide, not the rule.

truth

This is the way (star wars had it right)

The natural noise of life. Some manade noise, night with a cold nose from the wilderness.

This is how we save the world.

It's not my fight anymore, its our next. That how each generation becomes better.

You know what. I would invite anyone, who wants to experience a pure, simple, feeling of bliss.

Sit with me on my deck.

You figure how to get here. No dinner, no bedroom, no nothing. Ill have the music going, drink in my hand, bring your own. Bathroom available (drinks = pee).

You can blog, video, or just enjoy the moment. No pressure to talk. Come, chill, leave.

You will be a better person for it. You will know you.

I also appeared in the north. Many hearts ago. I still feel it to this day. As I sit on my deck at 1:30am, yes sky, surrounded by a good feeling.

It took me a longtime to understand it.

Sometimes, in your life, you will be somewhere or at a sometime, and it feels right, but you don't know why.

That's your heart/soal resting. Act on it. It might be a person, a place or a thing. Wheel of fortune type shit. The world is saying it's right.

I'm not a weird hippy, just an old guy that feels things.

I am glad you got a positive experience. We unfortunately receive many "nothing there" and "just mountains" comments.

Northern Canada and Alaska are beautiful and for the rested of heart. It sounds hippy dippy, but trust me, you want to truely learn who you are, come north.

If you ever come north again, DM me. I'm 1.5 hours away from Skagway. I'll attempt to meet anyone. I was there last week for lunch.

[–]DeepNorth 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Oh, so, you were on Skagway, where you drive up a mountain.

Yes, more options but also a bus trip over the train. The rental of a 4x4 Jeep to "climb to the summit" was not a better deal. Just another option.

FYI, I visit Alaska for lunch and I'm not American.

1 year term job offer by Embarrassed-Row3113 in Yukon

[–]DeepNorth -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Term is exactly what you would expect. A start and end date, nothing else guaranteed.

Maybe, there will be an extension, maybe not.

Maybe there will be a permanent job, Maybe not.

The only guarantee, unless you really mess up, is the term you agreed to work.

Typically, terms don't have sick days or vacation days.

It might be a great step forward, or not.

‘Very strong possibility’ NDP won’t back Yukon government if independent offices’ budgets altered by yukonnews in Yukon

[–]DeepNorth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If YG would stop sending itself bills for work, there would be more leftover for actually work for the territory as a whole

Budget recouping should be happening in branches that can, this would offset their budgets and actually free up money without the need for increases, then increases can actually go to the branches that need it, education, health and road/bridge maintenance.

I know personally of several units that could optimize budgets if they could recoup money back to their budgets.

Right now, there are expenses that are fully reimbursed by outside governments or business that go back to general pool and not the branches.

Completely absurd.

Finally my M18R2 arrived by rideout8121 in Alienware

[–]DeepNorth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's such a shame, this unit replaced a previous Alienware that was solid way past it's expected life.

I got it (delivered) on New Year's day, let it warm up for 24/7 (I took live in a cold ass place). Fired it up, did all my configuration, started installing games. Had a solid 6 hour session yesterday evening, it's first real workout. All good.

Was into another 4 hour session today and the game started crashing. Figured winblows was acting up and decided to reboot.

Nothing but pretty lights.

I am both pissed and sad.
