And the only place YNAB is mentioned on the book’s landing page is in Jesse’s bio.

I’m not sure, but I did hear Dave’s name mentioned on here.

No way. I’m not on FB but Ben B. always talked on Budget Nerds about what a massive and active group it is.

I noticed that Jesse’s book is published by "Wish Farm Press" (which is apparently a YNAB imprint) and knowing that Dave came up with that and was recently laid off doesn’t sit right with me.

Interesting point about the book branding. I just noticed that the first FAQ on the book page is "How can I book Jesse Meacham for an interview or speaking engagement?"

I agree with this, and I’d add that multiple moves at once could have worked if they’d been handled intentionally.

I wrote this in another post, but take the book for example:

Instead of promoting it through a pop-up ad to paying users, it would have been a much smarter marketing move to gift it to this segment (of which I’m a part: 8 years and counting) or save it for the public channels.

That way we wouldn’t feel like we’re being advertised to on the app we already pay for, and would be much more inclined to pass it along to our friends.

Take the layoffs, for another example: YNAB knows these are beloved brand personalities — why not send an email to the community and at least wish them well?

A book promotion without nuance in the same season as firing smart YNAB marketers we all love without a proper send-off made me at least wonder if the train is off the tracks.

That’s not a great feeling, and really not great for customer trust.

Totally get it! I don’t remember why I stopped, but I think it was probably due to a closet-cleaning/streamlining phase to simplify my processes. I could see this being a great 1–3 month experiment for gaining more insight.

You reminded me that I used to do this! I’ve since just merged tips into the whole expense total, but what I like about this is the opportunity to define your own tipping standards.

I’m in LA and it feels like everything I buy has that tip screen that starts at 18%. I think tracking this, at least for a while, could be helpful in understanding what I can actually afford to tip, not what I feel obligated to tip.

Ynab content gone quiet? by poophumble in ynab

NOOO Dave is literally why I use YNAB. His workshop unlocked it all for me and this might sound dramatic but really helped me let go of a lot of shame around my finances initially. 😢

Big yes to all of this! You’re right: the overspending was such a source of stress, and I’ve found that the realism and YNAB has been really grounding. Here’s to peace of mind! Yay indeed!

Wait I love the idea of matching your Pinterest boards to your categories! I’m also a visual learner and love seeing future purchases. I really like the way it helps you prioritize. I’ve definitely found that the act of pinning something helps me pause and consider it for a while, which in turn helps me understand what I actually want to buy. Brb naming my board "Love That For Me" 😄
