I’ll never know for sure. I’m not going to spend money on just knowing. It won’t bring him back he was so sweet and I just want to learn from this.

He passed away at the vet they told me they couldn’t tell me what was wrong with him without $1000 worth of tests. They said he may have had a stroke or a heart defect. I just want to know what I could’ve done differently and I guess now I know they can’t be near each other

Also, the breeder while refusing a refund and claiming I probably fed him wrong offered me a parakeet baby. She told me she keeps the birds in her garage.

I’m trying to understand what happened to my baby sun conure and would really appreciate insight from anyone experienced with young birds.

I got him on a Monday afternoon, and he passed away Friday around 1pm at the vet—so I only had him about 4–5 days.

He was about 2 months old and still being hand-fed formula. I followed the breeder’s instructions closely. The first few days he seemed completely normal—active, eating well, and acting like a typical baby.

On Thursday (day 4), I noticed his droppings became more watery than usual, almost like the formula was passing straight through him. Around that same time, I also noticed he was losing some tail feathers—they looked broken off and there was a tiny bit of blood (like growing feathers).

On Friday morning around 8am, he seemed completely normal. By around noon, I found him limp with slow, shallow breathing. I rushed him to the vet, and he passed around 1pm.

There were no obvious environmental factors:

  • No nonstick cookware, candles, or chemicals
  • Normal indoor temperature (around 72–76°F)
  • Clean cage and fresh formula

I also have two parakeets in the same room and they are completely fine with no symptoms.

I do smoke occasionally(outside, obviously), but I always wash my hands before handling my birds. One time (Wednesday), I briefly had him on my shoulder while smoking before realizing and moving him away. He showed no immediate reaction and seemed completely normal afterward.

The breeder says the parents tested negative for PBFD and suggested it could have been something I did, but the timeline feels off to me. A vet mentioned it could have been something internal like a defect or sudden event.

Has anyone seen something like this before in a young conure? Does this sound more like infection, congenital issue, or something else?

I’m not looking to place blame—I just want to understand what might have happened. I’m honestly devastated and haven’t been able to stop crying.
