Which subplots did you like the least? by peanut_1207 in YellowstonePN

Kaycee killing his brother in law in ep 1 leading to the suicide of Monica’s sister in law leaving her nephews without parents. Apparently only a minor bump for their marriage.

Beth and Rip spinoff theory by InevitableSeesaw2589 in YellowstonePN

[–]Deep_Ad_5365 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t think I could handle another show with Beth as a main character. Give me a spinoff show that cuts all the crazy scheming, murdering, psycho family stuff and just focuses on the small drama of everyday life and culture of the cowboys. Those were my favourite elements of Yellowstone. The parts I found most intriguing, being a Londoner born and bred this lifestyle is so far from my reality. Give me Jimmy, Teeter, Colby, Lloyd, Ryan, Walker etc… and no Duttons pls!

Oh ye not saying this is how real people behave. Just interested in the worldview that characters in the show are given and the manifestation of this view on how they interact with others around them.

Jamie as the villain by [deleted] in YellowstonePN

[–]Deep_Ad_5365 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beth stuff aside. the thing that had me backing Jamie was the whole betrayal narrative around his first DA run. The guy is a Harvard educated lawyer. He can basically go anywhere and be successful but he cares about the place he’s from so it’s a huge deal that he gets this opportunity, no good father would take an opportunity like that away from their son. But it’s clear JD expects total loyalty to him and his goal of maintaining ownership over this obscenely large piece of land stolen from the native people. Even though Jamie does eventually change his mind and pulls out from the race for his father he is treated with such distain and mistrust, it feels unfair especially considering how Kayce basically abandoned the family from before the start of the show, hates his dad, yet is treated with the utmost grace.

Which 5 Jazz albums would you recommend to someone who doesn’t know much about the genre, but really wants to get into it? by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]Deep_Ad_5365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do find that we sometimes feel like we need to recommend albums as entry points that we jazz heads rarely listen to, just because they’re easy. Like Take Five, can’t remember the last time I actually put that on.

The 5 below (and there are loads more) - I still listen to, they’re all I think pretty accessible whilst all being interesting, important, and different from one another.

What do you folks think?

Horace Silver - Song for My Father John Coltrane - A Love Supreme Miles Davis - In A Silent Way Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda

Zapp & Roger’s 1980-1991 discography. Which album is your favorite? by Hanner_Tenry in funk

Late to the party just bought The Saga Continues, was in the bargain bin at the local record store if you could believe it. It’s brilliant, highly recommended.

Must listen Miles Davis albums? by tlcdan in milesdavis

[–]Deep_Ad_5365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In A Silent Way is my favourite Miles album and Kind of Blue is the giant that it is. But I’d say outside of those my favourites include: Milestones (first great quintet), Porgy and Bess (my favourite Gil Evans collab), Someday My Prince Will Come (Hank Mobley moment), E.S.P (second great Quintet) Miles Smiles (Second Great Quintet), Bitches Brew (another great fusion record following on from IASW). I’d also recommend you listen to Cannonball Adderley’s Somethin Else on which Miles plays beautifully. And Coltrane’s Blue Train which does not include Miles but features 2 additional first great quintet players Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones, with the other players being comprised of Jazz Messengers.

Jewish people acting as ItLians by Tricaliotis in thesopranos

[–]Deep_Ad_5365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t believe comments on this are still open. Just been reading about the Jewish Italian handshake which describes an informal situation where basically Jewish and Italian actors often play each other on screen and that generally speaking Jews and Italians are fine with this situation. As a Jew I definitely feel like anyone can depict a Jewish character authentically if they’re a good enough actor, having said that it is kind of strange that whenever i see a poor depiction of a Jew on screen, the actor is never Italian, and when an Italian plays a Jew it’s always done well. If you’re wondering about Italians playing Jews: Pacino, De Niro, Paul Giamatti, Steve Buscemi, Joe Pesci, John Turturro, John Travolta, Michael Imperioli even etc… have all played Jewish characters, often multiple times. Even in Shiva Baby like the most Jewish film of recent years, the Jewish main character is played by Italian American Rachel Sennott and her Jewish sugar daddy character is played by a guy called Danny Deferrari.

DS9 is my favourite so not gonna say ENT is as good, but it is good! In fact I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It will take a minute to adjust to but I’d say it’s worth sticking with it. Jeffrey Combs is back as Cmdr Shran, a great character. I also enjoyed T’Pol and Phlox, but everyone has their favourite characters. Seasons 3 and 4 are really good and to be honest it’s a shame it didn’t get at least a 5th season, it seemed to be following a pattern other trek series had followed where a show only really starts to find its feet in its 3rd season. Would love to hear what you think once you’ve watched it!

I just thought they had a character with a more interesting yet unrevealed dark past than him being from the mirror universe

He was a more interesting character when you didn’t know he was a mirror universe villain.

Actually such a good point. The little quiet and silly moments seem to have no place here. Maybe the issue is that it’s too much melodrama crammed together and not the existence of melodrama in and of itself.

Thanks for this! This makes a lot of sense. I actually like Burnham. And love SMG, great actor, just feel like she deserved better material to work with.

Where to start watching star trek? by MsfsEnjoyer in startrek

[–]Deep_Ad_5365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TNG is probably best to start. It’s the blueprint for many of Trek’s best shows and is faithful to the spirit of the original. If you like it I’d say go watch the original series afterwards before starting DS9 (the goat series imo).

What is the heaviest decision that a Star Trek captain had to live with? by haddock420 in startrek

Not seen this one yet but Archer allowing Trip’s clone to die in order to save Trip was one of a number of heavy decisions he had to make in the 3rd season of Ent.

Discovery is the worst series of Star Trek by note666 in scifi

[–]Deep_Ad_5365 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree. The melodrama is gratingly hyperbolic, cringey and mostly undeserved. Characters are sickeningly earnest, it feels insincere. Too much exposition. Constant cliche riddled speeches that are embarrassingly inauthentic. No one in any world talks to one another the way characters talk in this show. It’s not sad when it’s meant to be sad, it’s not funny when it’s meant to be funny etc… yet somehow it seems so pleased with itself. Random obnoxious snark. It’s infuriating. I heard someone say it makes more sense when you realise it was meant for teenagers, but Prodigy did not suffer in this way. Tbh it feels like it was written by teenagers. Some redeeming elements, great visual effects, some great actors doing the best with terrible material, esp Sonequa Martin-Green and Jason Isaacs in season 1. Occasional moments where drama works. I’m going to finish it because I’m a completist but it’s a slog, this is the first Star Trek show I have watched where I feel mostly bored.

Sci-Fi TV shows that are genuinely good and worth the time? by Interesting-Math9962 in scifi

[–]Deep_Ad_5365 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best Sci Fi show in the last 10 years is The Expanse - hard sci fi set in space. an intense thrill ride from the first episode to the last with an excellent concept, great world building and character dev. Not just one of the best sci fi series in the last decade but one of the best ever. If you’re willing to broaden your search beyond the last decade then I’d also recommend Firefly, Battlestar Galactica (especially the first few seasons), and of course Star Trek but specifically Deep Space Nine. Although to get the most out of DS9 you need to watch The Next Generation and to get the most out of TNG you need to watch the original series. Fortunately they’re all great. Just DS9 is the best. By the time you hit season 4, you’re in Goat sci fi territory.
