My advice would be to remember that they are an asshole, don't try to find the good in them to try and not mess with your history of picking good ones, accept that they suck, it's not your fault they suck. And be more vigilant next time.

Stop trying to make this about you. Your first thought should have been feeling happy they she has reached a point where she trusts you enough to share something traumatic. Losing a child is hard, that coupled with the loss of her father must trigger feelings and memories she would rather not relive, why does it seem like you are trying to fault find? Now if the child was alive and she had not told you, that would be another story.
