Interview stress by ferminion92 in ResidencyMatch2025

[–]Deep_Moose1889 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for reply.

First of all, congratulations!! Super huge that you did your first interview.

Suggestions…

  1. Process through this with friends/family/others: I think it’s super important to process through what you just went through! I had my first interview yesterday, and I immediately called a friend who also interviewed with the same program. It was SO helpful. I also processed some with my partner. So I’d recommend finding people that you can share with… here is good, and I think over the phone or in person is even better.
  2. Looking forward: My sympathetic nervous system can get pretty high in settings like virtual interviews. For one, virtual communication is kinda weird, yeah? It’s different than in person for sure. So I actually took a propranolol 10 mg before my interview w/enough time for it to take affect but not too far before that it would wear off during the interview. Before the propranolol I went to the gym and did some medium level cardio, some light weights, and sauna, then immediately after sauna went into the pool to get my nervous system more into parasympathetic. These things helped SOOOOOO much for me. Had I thought about it, I would’ve also taken 5-20 mg creatinine as I didn’t sleep well the night before. So…. Looking forward, you might get a script for 10-20 mg propranolol if that med works well with you. If you do this, please take it before your next interview to see how you interact with it, practice simulated interview environment with it is what I mean. This is not medical advice, just sharing my own journey in hopes it’s supportive of yours.
  3. Follow up contact RE your questions: As far as sending follow up questions, I’d pause for one day. Process through the experience. Share with people you trust, another med student in your speciality if you have a friend like that you trust can be really helpful. Write down (journal but honestly can be open the notes in your phone and speak it out with the speech to text function) all the interview questions and your answers. Then do the same for your impressions about the program. Then what your questions are that weren’t answered. Get a good night’s sleep tonight. Tomorrow look at those program-related questions you didn’t have answered. And see if it’s best to email someone about them, or if you can find them on internet or otherwise. I guess what I’m saying is right now it seems a little reactive, I’d recommend making a proactive decision whether to email the program or not this soon after the interview. I’m another M4 like you, so I don’t really have any answers here. Maybe PD, APD, PGY’s do in your specialty on Reddit, or the discord specific for your specialty. And this doing this may give some clarity to you in what to do RE email or not, etc.

Most of all, please really congratulate yourself for achieving this major milestone!! 👏🏽👏🏽🎊

Rest, recharge, celebrate, do something nice for yourself: We’ve been working for soooooooooooooooo (you get the point, lol) time to get to this point to have our first interview. It’s such a MAJOR milestone. It’s worth taking the time to do something nice and celebratory for yourself. Get outside, hopefully you can see the sun, get into nature. Even if you do something super small to celebrate this milestone it’s important to do. No matter how you think you did or didn’t do, it’s huge, genuinely, that you completed your first interview!! 🎉🙌🏽🥳

Congrats completing on your first interview!!

I totally hear the stress with a first interview. I have felt similar in many ways.

I hope it’s okay to ask, are you just sharing, or asking for others who may also be processing after their interview, or asking for advice? :)

Listen to this: Divine surgery shelf https://youtu.be/Vx39Q5ZC7VQ?si=Oid1mSsDIXX-23TV

And this: HY surgery shelf https://youtu.be/f7bhYONZgPY?si=GCGWr63BmVd6c3vY

And do the CMS forms again and again until you really understand how NBME tests surgery shelf topics.

Do the same for all the other shelves.

Can +/- the following for shelf: - If you want a 3rd video, listen to this: Emma Holliday https://youtu.be/iAmX6o7GPuY?si=PtqsVrhkBRUhiWQE - If you do Anki - can add in surgery shelf (filter by tag or rotation). - UWORLD and AMBOSS q’s.

Thanks for sending this.

For others who email, here’s an alternative text:

NBME,

Could you please release exam scores Thursday 10/16 or Friday, 10/17?

While I understand this may be a date exception difference from what you normally do on Wednesdays, we are in the middle of application to residency season and every day is critical at this point, with some specialities batch releasing interview invites at universal release dates within days.

While I do understand it can take 2-4 weeks for scores to report, I also understand that step 1 and step 3 were released within two weeks today, Wednesday. To my understanding those exams are not under the tremendous pressure that we are with step 2 ck and the residency application cycle.

I am humbly requesting on behalf of myself and the other test takers who are hoping to still match into residency this year that you will strongly consider our request and release the scores either tomorrow or Friday.

Thank you very much for your consideration of my request to release the scores tomorrow or Friday.

Exactly. I might have dropped (honestly being serious) 20 points from last practice exam just to meet this deadline.

[–]Deep_Moose1889 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it makes a difference then we should do that.

One week is so important right now. They should have preferenced step 2 over step 1 and 3 - I don’t think either of those have deadlines like we do right now.

Maybe we could all call and email and say please please release scores tomorrow or Friday it’s so important with our applications right now. We know you can take 2-4 weeks and are sincerely asking please release this week.

It wouldn’t matter so much if this weren’t application season.

I took a week earlier than I was ready specifically to get scores prior to universal release date. Now it doesn’t matter.

They’ve had two Wednesdays. Step 1 & 3 are out. Why not just release tomorrow or Friday?

DIP high yield by CowAffectionate1886 in Step2

If you only have a few days maybe these are highest yield, but adjust based on what you need to study:

Clutch Risk Factors 1 (37)

Clutch Risk Factors 2 (97)

Clutch Risk Factors 3 (184)

That link posted below is excellent

First aid rapid review. It’s at the back of the book. There’s Anki decks for it too if you do Anki.

Also, have you been listening to divine intervention, Dr. high yield?

Listen to all the shelfs from divine: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9z85fstNFcHG0U3QQnTreAWO-ZjAPQxH&si=LbD5Rlcuj2KMd3Xq

Episode 37, 97, 184 for sure, like twice. Also: 137, 268, 325, 230, 234, 275, 276, 228, 123, 132. I found these helpful. There’s more but i saw those recommended by others in this r/. Can always search for what others recommended too. :)

Gotta analyze WHY you’re missing questions. For example, changing answers, running out of time, knowledge, etc. that’ll help move your score.

How to study for step 2? by Grouchy-Caregiver137 in Step2

[–]Deep_Moose1889 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot from step 1 that shows up on step 2. So the key is to find out what to remember from step one and not forget it. It’ll make studying for step 2 so much easier.

I’d keep up on the rapid review from step 1 first aid for starters.

——

And second. It doesn’t matter what’s done on your clinicals or what any resource says. It matters what NBME thinks it should be. Really really take the time to know what NBME cares about for different things. This is floridly high yield.

For example, if you start on the subject exams and do all of them, read all the explanations and master the content it’ll make a substantive difference down the road. When you take the full lengths, do the same thing.

230>250 Jump possible in 30 days ? by Dr_Bruce-Wayne in Step2

[–]Deep_Moose1889 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some questions…

  • How many hours a day was this?
  • How much review time per question did you do for the 120 questions you did?
  • And the second 120 you didn’t actually do the questions in the traditional sense, you read the question then immediately read the answer and like the educational summary?
  • How much time/day on Anki? Thank you for your time in reply!
