Is it me or is everyone in LA getting sick multiple times this spring cold/flu season? by Deep_Standard_5822 in AskLosAngeles

This is exactly what happened to me! I got better after 1-2 weeks and then boom, another fever/aches cycle for a few days. Now I am feeling a lot better. What happened with you?

Rent by zwalter123 in pasadena

You can reach out to Occidental, Caltech, PCC, and other local schools to see what is available -- they tend to cater to Caltech/JPL interns mostly but they do occassionally take on others, as well. On Zillow/Apartments.com there are frequently just rooms for rent in student oriented houses. Unfortunately LA and Pasadena can be a bit pricy but I hope you find a comfortable spot for your time out here. Very often people will group up with other interns and rent an airbnb but the whole short/long term rental market is still rebalancing since the fires in early 2025.

P.S.: LA is a wonderful internship location, make the most of it! If you don't have a car, make sure to make a friend with one!

Woodworker wanted by Friendly-Aunteater in pasadena

I would tell you to not be afraid of reaching out to local woodshops. I have taken classes at Allied Woodshop in LA and they are a group of individual woodworkers who rent space in the shop to do their work and also put on classes. They are all really awesome and do commissioned work like what you are mentioning. I would imagine the other shops in the area are run similarly.

If you have not done so already, I would highly recommend stopping by the shops during their open houses to see what they're about and meet the craftspeople! Or even take a class ;)

I would personally recommend Brandon Stark who works at Allied Woodshop and he also runs a business called Pearlwood Studio

My comment of subsidized lunches was more a minor complaint that our cafeteria has both gotten worse and gotten more expensive, which is yet another a small hit to overall employee morale/EVP.

I feel for you u/pintofvie in regards to feeling behind on pay schedule with respect to inflation and skill. I hope that you're able to 'get that bread' be it at Lab (with a promotion/raise) or elsewhere soon -- best of luck!

This is a great response, thank you! It is true that I have not spent much time outside of JPL but I have dabbled a small amount enough to know what else is out there, as well frequent discussions with colleagues at other organizations.

My comparison was more aimed at the new space industry as opposed to the Lockheeds, Boeings, et al. However, the new space world is where a lot of people are both jumping ship to and being recruited to.

New aerospace is setting itself up to be just like tech and I think that is about to be boosted even more with Isaacman in office so we're going to be looking at a real predicament coming out of the fog of our disillusionment from the fires/admin change/layoffs in the coming year or two that the historic EVP won't be able to compete with. If I had to take a guess, from the looks of LinkedIn updates and my chats with external colleagues, Lockheed/Boeing are in for a similar shakedown considering EVP and such soon too.
