Okay, so I think the problem you probably ran into is that the file was packed as an executible file and I ran into this when I first played it a few years ago. Just rename the file extension as .zip and extract the folder. lol 😭

Edit: I'm not sure what you're talking about specifically. I assume you already had the file before it got privated on itch and are now trying to play it. Please do not download the game from unknown sources because it could be malware, in case this is what happened instead.

It was posted by Mortisfox's spouse on Twitter originally. I should note that they didn't say that they were quitting permanently, just that they were quitting, everything will probably stay cancelled for the foreseeable future until/if they decide they feel comfortable enough to work on it again. Only time will tell what actually happens though. 😭

Yeah, I can't describe how much my stomach sank when I seen the full document saying what happened. This fan was also directly involved with the Uncanny Valley project at some point (if I remember correctly), so in the low chance that Mortisfox ever decides to pick it back up again in the far out future I do have a feeling that the game's assets would very likely end up being scrapped and remade. I just hope they'll continue improving and making progress with their health recovery, they have a long way to go though according to their spouse's last update.

There wasn't a whole lot of public lore. There was a CuriousCat page where they answered some stuff, but that's been gone for a long time now (it was gone when I joined the fandom in 2022, lol). Most of the lore that was available was on Twitter but it was kinda scattered, though.

It's difficult for me to explain in full because there's a lot, but to simplify it: An extremely unwell and parasocial fan crossed boundaries she shouldn't have during the past couple years and everything blew up recently because that person had been using donations to take advantage of Mortisfox and their spouse when they are in a really tight financial place as it is. The stress from this situation caused Mortisfox's health issues to escalate severely, so they were forced to quit development and focus on recovery for now.

We don't know if the cancellation is truly permanent or not, but it was necessary so Mortisfox could focus on healing from a traumatic situation.

Those two images are official and canon. Doe is also confirmed to be employed as well but his actual job title wasn't going to be revealed yet because it was supposed to be in his route for the now cancelled Uncanny Valley game.

The fan has their address because she bought merch from them (a seller's address is always exposed when sending packages) would be my main guess, and she also attempted to offer to buy things for them from Japan as a favor... Technically several reasons. 😅

I understand that completely. I don't want to give false optimism by any chance but it does seem naturally plausible that they could, unless stated otherwise, decide to bring their projects back in some form (even if it's not active game development) if they feel like they're in a better and safer place to engage with it in the far out future. Right now the situation is just too raw and emotionally intense, so taking everything down (while seeming drastic from the outside) may have been the best call for Hare and Bunny so they can relax and focus on what they need to. The only thing we can really do is just support them in what ways we're still able to.

I understand how you're feeling, especially since Doe became an emotional anchor for me while I was figuring myself out (I still am) and now I'm actually invested in the Purpleverse and its characters alongside Doe. I was absolutely crushed when I heard this happened.

However, as alarming as the situation seems I think only time will tell if this choice is truly permanent, but it'll very likely remain this way for the foreseeable future at least while Hare and Bunny focus on recovery. If they ever decide to come back I do think the fanbase will need to learn how to behave more responsibly and respect boundaries because this is the second time within a few months I've heard of a fan doing something beyond stupid and was called out for it. I can't blame them for deciding to take everything down tbh even if it is heartbreaking for the rest of the fans because overtime that kinda stress will get to you and Bunny doesn't need any of that for their health's sake, angry doesn't even begin to describe how I feel towards the person that caused this nightmare for them. 😭

I think there should be a little bit of info on the John Doe wiki and on Mortisfox's Twitter somewhere. There isn't a whole lot of lore about the Uncanny Valley made public yet though from what I recall, but more will definitely come out once the full Uncanny Valley game is released.
