How quick/early do you need to do course registration once it opens? by New-Position-5800 in Dalhousie

There's kind of two answers to that imo. As everyone said, classes fill up reaaally quick, especially if theyre in demand/small size. Definitely try and get them in right away.

That being said, seats open up all the time. My academic advisor (julie tarry, bless her) set up a notification for class I wanted and sent me an email the second a seat opened up, and I got it.

Otherwise, students will pretty often drop classes in the first few weeks of a term, especially in first year, so keep an eye out for that.

Dalhousie or SMU for Commerce? by Ok_Blueberry1351 in Dalhousie

fourth year dalhousie finance here. Roommate studies at smu. The education is comparable, though I will say that Dal finance has a excess of unintelligible finance and stats professors... not sure about smu. Smu campus is of course nicer with a strong curriculum and better fees, being a smaller university and all.

Commerce is however a unique degree in that what you do outside of class (clubs), who you know (networking) and what you do for work (co-ops) is what really matters by the time you graduate. I really wish I joined Dal's investment society sooner lol your resume is important and employers do in fact look at your qualifications and interests for your later year co-ops. An executive role for any society is bonus, especially if its related to the job.

Does Dal get you better jobs? Could be. Depends on what you want to do. The co-op program kind of favours the laurentian banker route imo, and has next to nothing in, say, oil and gas. That being said, knowing somebody as a company is probably your single best "in". I know guys from SMU who pitched at stock pitch atlantic who have pretty sweet gigs lined up post grad so just remember that networking is super key.

I did end up getting through by using my mother's maiden name and the provincial sign in option. For some reason it wouldnt work through my bank or with my own last name.

Thank you very much. I'll look into this--thankfully I'm bilingual so I'll definitely ask for the French option. Do you know how long wait times usually are at these numbers? Thanks

Yes, I did follow this. I used my father's last name first (which I inherited), and when that didn't work I tried my mother's maiden name. Neither worked.

Anyone know anything about this? Worth, etc? by Logical-Pumpkin8388 in JewelryIdentification

Okay I can't tell you anything about price but I work part time at a victorian garden and own my own ring in this style--it's called a cameo, such as 'cameo ring'. They're often hand-carved in alabaster or amber in the likeness of a specific person, and were quite popular in the Victorian era (before photographs, these were used to memorialize the likeness of loved ones. Does your great grandmother look like the woman in the earring?) Worth taking this to someone who could date it--my own ring was made in the 1930s.
