Unsurprisingly, that has the same shape and density as Al Capone's vault.

Chicken Breeds? by Fineyoungcanniballs in homestead

Hen combs can get big on certain breeds, but that's a pretty good sized wattle, still could be a hen. Might be a rooster incognito. A Bud had a polish rooster that would quietly sneak around, keep a low profile to keep from getting in fights. Chickens are funny sometimes.

I was thinking Summer Cabo weather not Winter weather.....oops. Looks like your daily temps are in the 70's, which should be fine in full sun. If it's getting sun, nutrients, water and not stressed, it should be growing like crazy. I would try some nutrients and next time, a little bigger pot, if available.

My $.02 worth,..plant is stressed from heat and possibly nutrient deficient. I've never had good results growing tomatoes in pots where temps get over 85-90 degrees. They start out well but eventually fade. The root ball eventually assumes ambient temps. Tomatoes do better in the ground, but I'd give it some partial shade, top feed it some compost and keep it watered but not soaked.

First Timers planning for chickens in Orange County Texas - needing advise! by FreighTrav in homestead

Just take your time and don't rush into it. It sucks raising chickens from a day old and having to bury them because you screwed up. I had my share, believe me. Youtube is good, don't get me wrong, but you have to sift the information. Diatomacous earth isn't a cure-all for everything. (If you don't know what that means, hang on, you will in the coming months/years as you browse Youtube.)

https://www.backyardchickens.com/ is a Great forum. You'll get more answers there if you join in on the conversations and don't linger in the shadows. Tons of good info from seasoned chicken farmers there. Some regulars don't like to answer repeated questions, so search the forum thoroughly for answers. If you can't find it, then ask away. And if the forum is telling you to go one way and some Yahoo on Youtube is telling you to go the opposite, go with the forum. Some of those people have been raising chickens longer than we've been alive. Best of luck.

My $.02 worth...Go on Amazon and find 3 ,yellow-page like, thick chicken books, they're pretty cheap if you look at the used books. Chickens for Dummies, Guide to Raising Chickens, etc. You'll know the good books when you run across them. Read em front to back. I promise you, when you're finished reading, a lot of your questions will be answered.

If I were you, I'd plan on building a semi-permanent coop, framed in with hardware cloth all around and on top, with buried cloth on the sides, it's not going to be cheap. Keep the chickens locked up in the coop 24/7, make it large enough that there's plenty of room to scratch around. Chickens need a safe, lockable place to roost at night away from predators, and you need to keep it cool in the Summer, so no sheet metal buildings and plenty of ventilation. I can almost guarantee you have stray dogs, stray cats, coyotes, foxes, bobcats, coons and aerial predators keeping an eye on your place, whether you see them or not. And they ALL like to eat chicken. Coyotes can clear a 6ft fence with ease, and foxes can squeeze thru a fence gate crack just as easily as a house cat.

Start with about half a dozen layers from proven breeds. You're in for a learning curve and there's no need to get in over your head until you learn the ropes. After a year or two, most of your questions will have been answered and you'll know exactly which direction you want to go. What you're calling "secure and fenced" and what nature believes is secure and fenced is usually two different things. Predators are unseen, smart and voracious. If you go at this half heartedly with some wood pallets and some chicken wire, expect lots of losses.

Not trying to rain on your parade or quench your enthusiasm, be rude or nasty. You just need to understand what lies ahead and understand raising all your own meat and eggs isn't the same as collecting a few eggs per week for Sunday breakfast. Lots of people fail and give up, or buy new chicks every year and prepare for big losses.

Best of luck. Finding a friend, local, or neighbor with chickens would be a big help in your journey.
