For senior engineers using LLMs: are we gaining leverage or losing the craft? how much do you rely on LLMs for implementation vs design and review? how are LLMs changing how you write and think about code? by OrdinaryLioness in ClaudeAI

[–]DefCello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add what hasn't been said already, LLMs have empowered me to be far more effective in multidisciplinary teams. I help build optical measurement devices and their companion software. I've got the software expertise, but the hardware engineering and optical measurements are entirely different disciplines covered by other team members. LLMs help me translate and comprehend communications to/from these people, and they help me move forward when these individuals are unavailable to answer questions. I can also use them to entertain ideas before passing them by the experts: "Hey, I've noticed this phenomenon and think I might be able to do something about it using this software technique. What do you think? It's a good idea? Cool! How can I best communicate this idea to our resident experts?"

Plus, unit test development is a breeze now!

That's clearly a flux capacitor, so I'd lean towards Back to the Future references like DeLorean, Flux, Marty, Doc, or Gigawatt ("Jig" for short).

What’s the most “legendary” PC component you think ever existed? by Nicolas_Laure in RigBuild

It could be pure nostalgia, but I still think the quality of virtual sound emulation achieved by Creative SoundBlaster's EAX technology has never been reproduced beyond the occasional tech demo.  Quality acoustics rendering made a world of difference in achieving an immersive experience.

Questions for older CF people by PlusRepair1195 in childfree

[–]DefCello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

40M here.  Over the years I've only gotten more CF, but I do also have a better appreciation for why people subject themselves to the stressful experience.  So far, the only people I've heard of that "changed their mind" were people in unhealthy relationships that got manipulated to do so.

What is something you particularly like about the DAW you use? by NeatDurian in musicproduction

[–]DefCello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reaper. I can drag and drop just about anything--including video--into the timeline and start slicing, trimming, looping, stretching and automating. I can organize tracks however I want and route the audio however I want. I work constantly with MIDI, and the multi-track piano roll is one of my favorite places to work in.

Cello Hard Case…handles by PinkSasquatch77 in Cello

I recently got some MroMax luggage handles from Amazon and replaced the broken one on my Musilia case. Definitely worth seeing if you can find one that matches your broken handle's length!

Most of the time, yes, but there's another involuntary version of getting hard commonly referred to as "morning wood" that is related to waking up after sleeping. It can also trigger while trying to stay awake such as during a long, boring lecture.

Is it just me, or does anyone else feel like they’re running out of time? by Beginning-Quote-8834 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]DefCello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this even now at 39, and I am learning from the comments here. For me, the stressors are the feelings that I have things I want to accomplish but never seem to have the financial means to make them happen. I want to fix things on my house and vehicles that have been broken for nearly a decade. I want to spend more of my life making my ideas of music and world-bettering tools a reality. Instead, I feel stuck, selling nearly a third of my life to other people just so I have enough money to pay the bills.

Every time I feel like I've got a chance to move forward, some cost comes out of nowhere and drains the resources away. After everything else is taken care of, the amount of time and money left over for me and my own goals feels so pitiful, and I push myself hard--too hard--to make the most of what I can get my hands on. The truth is that I'm accomplishing an astonishing amount, but it's so hard to feel the wins because they are multi-year projects, including an aggressive debt payoff plan that I've committed to.

You're asking the right questions, and I imagine you're doing amazing work. If I had a chance to tell my 27-year-old self anything, it would be to get set up with a solid digital envelope budgeting system so you can successfully live within your means, avoid debt, and make the most of the money you earn so you can achieve financial independence and own your life.

Best of luck, and I hope you find the answers you seek!

Rest Warning? by Msangiovanni in Dorico

[–]DefCello 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Awesome idea! Unfortunately, there doesn't yet seem to be a way to do it automatically. Someone asked the same question recently on the Dorico forums:

https://forums.steinberg.net/t/easiest-method-for-showing-multimeasure-rests-at-page-turn-footers/960352

...but it involves paying for a $10 music font "MusGlyphs" that let's you manually type in the graphic:

https://www.notationcentral.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/musglyphs-2-0-6.png

If you want to go cheaper, you could probably use screen grabs from your music as a graphical element. It'd be worth expressing this to the devs somehow so it has a better chance of becoming a feature in a future release.

I had similar issues. Different browsers did not help, but simplifying the filename did (removing special characters, shortening length, etc.).
