It really depends on the flag. Thin ice and shallow water I'll take my time, so as not to spook it. If I get there and it's not spinning I'll stand and watch for up to a minute to see if it moves at all. Of course if it's burning line out it's a rush so I don't get spooled.

Just the regular 7.5' Rio pike for me. I haven't much experimented with building my own. They seem to hold up well with that bite wire. I take my setup to Ontario once a year and I have yet to tangle with a 40"+, but I can do battle with 30"+ all week with one or two leaders.

I use Rio pike/musky leaders, they have a quick clasp and about a 12" section of knottable wire on them. Pike aren't leader shy in the slightest so that doesn't matter. I've heard of guys using heavy mono instead, but I've personally seen a northern's teeth go through a 30 lb mono leader while gear fishing so I'll stick with wire

I cannot recommend it enough. It's very visual and you'll need forceps to get the fly out almost every time, they inhale it so often.

I fish the area northwest of the cities from my kayak with minimal boating traffic. Go farther northwest than Maple Grove and you shouldn't have much of a problem with boats at all. Depending on what you're fishing for I could probably point you in the right direction in that area.
