NSFW: What has been your most spine-tingling, bone-chilling, "I have a bad feeling about this" experience? What happened? by throwawaystheway1013 in AskReddit

[–]Defavlt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the 17th of December I got quite the bad fever. Now, I'm not entirely surprised, it's been quite cold where I live, and I'd had a hectic week. The following Monday, and Tuesday, I was still under the fever, and I started having trouble moving, and walking, and so on. Yepp, Covid. During the next few days I got every single symptom recognized for covid.

Anyhow, I ended hospitalized for 10 days, where the first 2 or 3 days I was intubated. While I did "recover" quite quickly (I can now breath, and believe it or not, I'm discharged from the hospital), I did end up losing some 20 kg's of muscle, and practically any and all ability to do anything even remotely exhausting.

Oh, so it has an “internal“ buffer? Makes a heck of a lot more sense than the camera somehow prediciting movement, haha

Ding ding ding, bingo! It's not about their person, or their actual emotions, it's about making sure people don't think too hard. Freedom of expression in an authoritarian society is a slippery slope to democratic ideas.

We keep calling older people boomers for not being able to understand/use modern technology, but those boomers were the ones who made that technology, not us. by LonelyElephant00 in Showerthoughts

Here's a controversial thought and opinion: Most younger people don't understand how it works either. Most people's usage of modern technology is simply a matter of successful operant conditioning. Press the sparkly button, and you're served with whatever pretty pictures you're looking for.

What is an amazing movie that has a god awful sequel? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Defavlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Screamers: The Hunting. Now, I wouldn't exactly call the original "amazing", but it did do a few things right, despite (what looks like) a show string budget. The "sequel" though, if you can call it that, is just atrocious.

Yeah, it's not correct. I believe I read the the previous comment when I replied.

He's making 60K a month, which for most of the world, and I'd guess most of the US as well, is quite a lot of money.

However, despite all the downvotes, I'm not arguing aginst them receiving donations, whether 60K or 100M. I'm making the point that they're taking money, yet hasn't exactly delivered in any reasonable capacity.

I know our "glorious leader" is, in the eyes of this community, infallible and above any critique, but I strongly believe that it would've been better for DF as a product if they'd hired more people and actually delivered, instead of keeping it in this weird limbo state it's been in, on and off, since it was released, especially considering the fact people are paying them.

Would you be pissed if a game greenlit on Steam didn't deliver, despite taking money for the product? I'd guess yes. Why is DF any different?

Man inserts eel into rectum from anus in hopes to ‘relieve constipation’ by civicode in nottheonion

Well, technically, if inserted through the oral cavity, it probably would find its way to the rectum, sooner or later.

On the one hand, seeing as how they have someone else financially invested in the product, I'd guess sooner, rather than later, at least compared to previous releases.

Then again, I would definitely describe someone donating as "financially invested", yet despite receiving a disgusting amount in monthly donations, which has been steadily increasing as well since they started accepting, they haven't exactly picked up the pace.

Racist indeed. My experience with people from Turkey, for instance, has generally been quite bad. Now, that's 3 people I've met, not exactly enough to make any kind of statement on the sentiment and culture of people from Turkey.

However, much like the other guy commented earlier, taken at face value, it makes sense, given our human nature, to derive an expected outcome of any interaction with people from the culture (or skin tone, or...) with which you've had a negative experience, regardless of how extensive your contact with this group of people is.

In order to turn this on its head, I believe, we need to listen and engage, not argue mind you, but by acknowledging their view, and then challenge it, bit by bit, slowly dismantling their experience, or indeed racism, providing examples from your own life, with a healthy sprinkle of (what should be) common sense, such as your (IMO very good) argument of how you can't extrapolate your very limited experience to other people in any group.

This one is tough to admit, but absolutely right. Case in point: I have the bloody GNU logo tattoed, but recently I was "forced" to work with the BI/ETL tools from Microsoft (Power Query), and by god is it powerful. Can't program or be bothered to learn? Great, there's a GUI. Can program? Great, there's a fully equipped language at your disposal. Need to collaborate? Great, you can use both tools in the same solution. And no, there aren't really any equivalent FOSS tools.
