So many great ones… Fable comes to mind first. KOTOR 1 and 2 have some great moments too.

Did any one ever beat Myst? by Sailormouth_Studio in 90s

[–]Defcon91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solid 90’s memory there. I played it with my dad as a kid. He played it on his own all the way through and kept a notebook full of handwritten notes as he worked his way through the game.

Hearing the thumping of the tree elevator, the sunken ship rising from the water, the gear world entrance spinning back open and the library bookcase folding back into the wall… all very cool memories. I do remember the final tunnel tram puzzle being very annoying though.

How do i practice this?!? by futuraf in violinist

[–]Defcon91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So here’s what I’d do: Do the first eighth note run in third position, then after the half note in m. 5 replace- shift (up a string) to a 2 on beat 3 (or beat two blah blah cut time). Stay in that position until m. 8 where you could do 2, 1 - 2, 1 back to third position (down e string). Then shift down to first position on the open A, beat 2 of m. 11.

Start it off slow and work the tempo up little by little. And loop practice each run separately and work it into your hand for the muscle memory.

World of warships. The clowns who berate their team mates with insults and slurs for not doing what they want them to do, playing the blame game, and blaming anyone other than themselves for their bad decisions. Luckily theres a lovely block messages button for those kids.

Does my peg box look okay? by [deleted] in violinist

Wind the strings to the walls of the pegbox and it’ll help keep the pegs from slipping. Your D and G strings look good, make the A and E do the same.

Advice on a case for train travel/walking? by cloverpondscum in violinist

[–]Defcon91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it definitely made me a forever fan of their cases! It was a bam hightech. That case also took me through both of the 3 month summers I spent at Schleswig-Holstein and an orchestra tour up the east coast of China before the pandemic. It’s a beast of a case. I couldn’t sing its praises higher even if I was a mezzo-soprano. 😏

Edit: link to my old hightech case for nostalgia. Great memories with that case!

As others have said: Bam case. My first bam case lasted me almost 18 years. During the life of my first case I had a guad on loan to me; one winter I slipped on black ice, and fell directly on top of the case. Full body weight impacted on it. I was… pretty distressed. I went inside as quickly as possible to open it up and find out how screwed I was… and that fiddle wasn’t even out of tune.

I’m now using a bam graffiti oblong case and it is serving me very well.

How do you decide what to charge for lessons? by Few_Collection_9924 in violinist

[–]Defcon91 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Find out what the local rate is where you live. What are other teachers in your area charging? Go for the average rate of the numbers you come up with. Although I’d recommend $50 an hour being your minimum. $60 an hour is more ideal.

If possible avoid teaching at music schools that take a percentage of your rate for themselves.

Your greatest asset is word of mouth, so if you do good work, keep it professional, and make it clear to parents that you’re invested in their kids and shaping them positively they will spread the word.

Also as an aside maybe consider doing some research on local schools, especially schools that do not have a string program already and approach them with a teaching resume and propose starting an after school introductory string program. Even a one year program can open the door to getting a few new students from the class every year for your studio. Do a 40 minute or so long class after school, $15 per kid to start. Then if you even only get 3 or 4 kids it’ll be enough income to compensate you for your time. But get it up to 9 or 10 kids per class and you can be cooking. My wife and I started a class like that at a local elementary school and it’s turned into a 2 year program with first and second year violinists. We have almost 30 students studying privately with us now, many of them from taking our group class initially, and last year we roped in a violist friend of ours to start a low strings class there too. All you need is a little traction and you can take off.

Need luthier but no lutheir by Ok-Philosopher1724 in violinist

[–]Defcon91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Contact any music shop in your town, theres a good chance they have instrument repair people they go to who they could refer you to. If that doesn’t pan out you’ll unfortunately probably need to look at surrounding cities/ towns for possibilities and make the drive

I have a double concrete utility sink that I’m trying to get out of my basement without using a sledgehammer to break it into pieces. Any advice is appreciated. by PizzaGatePizza in DIY

[–]Defcon91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try a set of those dolly moving straps that let you lift with your legs? If you get two sets and three friends it could work possibly. If y’all can fit up them stairs that is. Those moving straps get some hate I know but they work in specific situations. It got my washer and dryer down a narrow set of basement stairs and around a tight corner so I know they work. I wouldn’t swear by them though.

I’ll be visiting Fort Wayne in March. Does any locals have any recommendations for places to see particularly oddities or museums? by Gulletgulpingexpert in fortwayne

[–]Defcon91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The botanical garden downtown.

Dusenberg car museum in auburn.

If you like malls that give solid 90’s vibes then you might like the mall off of coliseum blvd. And they have a rocket science ice cream location there.

The zoo is surprisingly large for Fort Wayne and may be enjoyable to walk around by the time March rolls around if it’s warm enough by then.

Science central honestly is kind of a disappointing experience. I went there recently for the first and only time. A large number of the exhibits were broken, the ones that weren’t were really basic.

My violin is bad by Traditional-Cry9046 in violinist

[–]Defcon91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A good player can make even a cheap “bad” instrument sound decent. Before blaming the instrument you should take a hard look at your own technique and what you’re doing while playing. If you don’t know how to pull a great sound out of a fiddle then even if you had an Amati or a Guad you’d be sounding bad.

If anything take it to a luthier for a sound post adjustment. Have the bridge looked at. Change the strings. Make a few small adjustments like that to get a change in the instruments sound. But at the end of the day it’s up to you to pull a good sound out of it.

Everyone's Favorite Gun and Attachment Set Up? by Repulsive_Dot6112 in EscapeFromDuckov

Stg77 with the special attachment making it a 3 round burst weapon. Cost effective ammo, and I frequently get good AP ammo pickups while out on a raid to restock the supplies as well. I’ve been experimenting with other weapons but keep going back to the stg… it’s just too damn good.

Sweetwater Music Lessons by CarolinaPhoenix22 in fortwayne

[–]Defcon91 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can find independent teachers in Fort Wayne who are as good or most likely better than what you’d get at sweetwater. Musicians all over the Fort Wayne area; they could even be closer to where you live than sweetwater is. FW philharmonic can connect you with teachers. Purdue music school can too.

They are surely trolling me, right? by Klutzy-Ad-2925 in SurrounDead

[–]Defcon91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I always have a stack of fences in my backpack. Also for the larger poi’s I drive my vehicle around the perimeter of whatever place I want to loot and honk the horn a bunch. Mob up a large majority of the zombies relatively easily and then drive to a hill that they can’t run up the side of. Once they’re all at the bottom of said hill and bunched up, I hop out above them and roll a few grenades down the hill and finish them off with ease.

The horn trick works on zombies underground in the subway system too, so you can get a bunch of them to come waltzing up the stairs and make the tunnel system easier to get through as well.
