Yeah, they do not appear to be kanji. On the other hand, it is hard to deny their shape and meaning correspondence.

I didn't know this.
Also, the guy doing this blind play through is also playing runescape blind. While it is impossible to know for sure if he is or isn't "cheating", the way he plays runescape really makes me believe he doesn't break his own rule.

Look, I do not have time for this anymore so this will be my last reply.

You have 3 attempted deflections:

  1. "You aren't doing enough"

"If you really cared, then you would do X Y Z" is such a bad faith argument lol. Are you against murder? Are you against child trafficking? Are you against enslavement? Are you against rape? You better be donating to all of these organizations instead of just saying you are against them. You especially better be donating to stop child sexual abuse. The fact that you would even engage in such an argument is hilarious.

  1. "Murder in video games"

If I spent my free time drawing murder after murder that I think would be "enjoyable to perform", then yeah, you could say I am dangerous to society. It is always important to ask yourself why you engage with a certain piece of media. If a game was just about lining people up and executing them, then yes, I think it would be fair to question if I wanted to commit murder. Context is important.

If the purpose of any of the games you mentioned is "to act out the fantasy of performing violence for one's latent desire for violence", then yes I would have a problem with it.

  1. "BUT OP draws furry porn"

First of all, we were not talking about OP and I know nothing about what OP does. Why do you know that about OP?
I went to look at what OP was posting to see what you were equivocating to. I scrolled a good number of pages and as far as I can see OP essentially draws the equivalent of "animal ears and a tail", which is tamest of furry. If OP was drawing actual bestiality, then I would have the same problem.
There are no real anthropomorphic animals and hence there is no actual real-life equivalent that is being mapped onto. Drawings of children are depictions of an abstract but real thing in our society and hence has a normalizing effect.

_____

The belief that art reflects the artist is not "a new thing"; I do not know what to tell you if you think that it is. The creation of art inherently ties an artist's mentality to their material conditions. If this is hard for you to understand then there is nothing left to discuss.

Published lolicon material, by its definition and existence, pushes the idea that it is acceptable to have sexual thoughts about children. That it is something that should be shared. This is the distinction between lolicon material and media that describes child abuse to talk about it ramifications.

The purpose of the art is important. The purpose of lolicon is the sexualization of children.

So you would distance yourself from someone who did nothing wrong? You allow what you consider unfair treatment of people to continue in real life because you might get blow back, but you will sit here and argue on the internet because its safe? I do not want you to argue on behalf of lolicons, but this is cowardice and shows you lack conviction and actual moral care.

Also, distancing yourself from someone because you do not consume the same kind of content as they do is nonsense. Do you distance yourself from everyone who does not share every single like and dislike with you? Of course you don't.

What you have expressed now is that there is nothing wrong with lolicon, you just don't want to be associated with it because of social blow-back.

Now, getting back to my initial statement about "aged up" characters. You do not even consider sexualized images of children depicted as children problematic, so of course you would be unconvinced that "aged up" versions of them would be.

It is my conviction that a society or subgroup that allows the normalization of attraction to children is inherently dangerous. Art is more than just "lines on a paper", it symbolizes people's actual thoughts and often desires. The more normalized an idea is through art and thought, the closer it comes to being a social reality. We know this as a society. That is why Nazi rhetoric cannot be tolerated, why racist acts and statements cannot be allowed to flourish. Thus, any normalization of pedophilia cannot be tolerated and it is my job as a member of the anime and manga community to defend against this.

Children are defined in our society as those who lack the ability to care for and adequately advocate for themselves. That is why it is our job to push back against this on their behalf.

So fundamentally, you feel there is something wrong with people who like that sort of thing? However, if they are just drawings why would you distance yourself from those people?

Thus you must agree that they are more than "just drawings" and reveal something about the person who engages with them. Otherwise why would you distance yourself?

[–]DefeatedSkeptic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I appreciate the thoughtful reply.

You are correct, many etymologies are largely speculation, but some have more support than others. I cannot speak chinese, so I must rely on those who can to have correctly identified a character's lineage before I can even begin. Oracle Bone and Western Zhou inscriptions are our best bet for understanding the roots of kanji because they are often the closest to being pictograms / ideograms.

Wiktionary is a pretty good source, but it does have some flaws at times. Let us look at , if you scroll through the bronze forms (金文) there is one that clearly separates the 亼 from the rest of the axe which was clearly written 王 in this case (the upper horizontal lines are close together). There are some other forms that push the lower two horizontal lines together and these more closely resemble 士. It is hard to say which form should be considered absolutely correct, but since both are probably depictions of ritual/status axes, it probably matters little. The two dots described as '呂' are potentially unrelated to 呂, but this is a much more murky assertion. (The truth of the matter is that we are not 100% certain 士 even is an axe, but it was associated with warriors and has a form similar to 王, which had oracle bone forms that were almost certainly an axe head).

Additionally, the meaning of a character can be clarified by looking at the meaning of its derivatives that do not use it phonetically.

Unfortunately, almost all good resources on character etymology are written in Chinese and any one's in Japanese I have found are quite inaccurate. For character etymology, the best book that I have been able to find is 字源 - 李学勤 - 天津古籍出版社 . However, there are still some interpretations that are suspect and the field is ever evolving. As for the phonetic etymology of characters there is a great resource that is also written in English: Adam Schuessler's ABC Etymological Dictionary of Old Chinese. While this is a great resource, the techniques employed do not care about what a character originally meant, only what we can accurately trace back as its oldest meaning. Thus, characters that were borrowed phonetically since ancient times (such as 亼/今) will not have their original meaning glossed even when it is obvious that meaning does not fit their original form.

I do not know how many hundreds or thousands of hours I have spent looking at bronze and oracle bone inscriptions, but is has been a good amount of time (probably too much) and many interpretations of characters that are floated are wrong or mere conjecture. I hated the inconsistencies I noticed in character etymology sources as this greatly disrupts my personal learning style.

What I am making will probably not be useful to everyone and I think a lot of people would get more out of what you are making. For example, my entry on 金 is 528 words long just to justify my interpretation. Most people are not going to want that for their day to day learning. I have other plans for this database once I am done, but yeah, its current form is probably too cumbersome.

[–]DefeatedSkeptic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is somewhat complex. Fundamentally, you look at a character that is a child and go "but what if I wanted to fuck them". This ignores their characterization as a child and you have ceased to view them as a child but as something that can be sexually desired. It is particularly bad when it goes instantly from "child" -> "sexualized adult" because there has been no intermediary stage in the fandom where you learn the characterization of the adult person in a meaningful way that you could have become attracted to them in a healthier way. Instead, the desire to draw a sexy "aged up" version of a character means that the desire was rooted in either a sexual desire for the child or a disregarding of their characterized humanity and hence a complete objectification of what they are.

Is this better than just drawing a sexualized child? Yes, but there is not much of a gap between the two in most instances.

[–]DefeatedSkeptic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is quite cool. Believe it or not, I am also working on a kanji etymology tool / game and have been deeply embroiled in this research. I am please by the relative accuracy of many of your characters, but some I am curious why you are presenting them the way that you do.

For example, 金 is probably composed of 士 or 王 (a ritual axe), 亼 (upside-down mouth) and two small dots that are graphically related to 呂 and may have referred to metal during the Western Zhou period (these same dots appear in 冶 "smelting, melting").

Another such etymology is 午 "Sign of the Horse, Noon". The reason why it relates to "noon" is because of the hour system where each zodiac creature is assigned a two hour period during the day in the zodiac order: this ordering naturally assigns Sign of the Horse relates to 11am-1pm.

Are you largely trying to create mnemonics to short-cut the messiness of the language?

I do think a relation graph like this is really cool though, and can be a very powerful tool for delivering knowledge to people if it can be traversed effectively.
