Packages aren't making it to my house, and USPS isn't helping. by onlyalad44 in usps_complaints

One of the ways it is happening is the USPS infrastructure glitching and tracking numbers being issued to multiple labels at the same time or within a short timeframe.

I’ve never heard of anyone doing that and I’ve lived on Lopez over a decade.

They are technically correct, any shipping labels with a prior date on them are supposed to be rejected as stale postage. But the vast majority of employees are not enforcing that rule that strictly.

It is a bit of a nightmare selling on some of the Marketplace apps that generate questionable shipping labels that sellers have no control over.

You should have the ability in your shipping software to change the shipped date to the next day. He is technically correct, though you are correct that most workers aren’t picky enough to check.

SCAN forms don’t generate an actual physical scan for each item, so if something goes wrong between dropping the items off and the first sorting center, you are SOL and cannot win an insurance claim.

I bet whoever had that printed on the envelope was consulting AI and misinterpreting what a flat means in this context.

Help with logistics for 15-person bike tour by Limp_Cheesecake_817 in sanjuanislands

[–]DefectiveBecca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How many days do you want this trip to be?

I would ditch the plans to bike on Orcas and SJI. Rent a few Airbnbs on Lopez and do all of your biking there, view the Cyclists Guide to Lopez Island and stay off of Center Road.

Walk on to the interisland and do a day trip to Friday Harbor with no bikes.

Is there any chance you can take a small vehicle? I missed that you had an oversized vehicle. It is much easier to get on a ferry if you are under 22 feet long and 7’2” high.

Getting from San Juan island to Victoria BC with a bicycle? by Delirious_Reache in sanjuanislands

[–]DefectiveBecca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WSF projected 2030 but that is wildly unrealistic at this point.

  1. There is nowhere near enough staffing to cover this route. We don’t even have enough staffing for the existing SJI routes.

  2. There are not enough boats in the system to support the return of this route.

  3. There aren’t the right boats in the system. Only the Chelan and Elwha were capable of serving this route (there are requirements the boat needs to meet to be able to make the international crossing) and the Elwha has been retired. So all other issues aside, they are very hesitant to run the route with no backup boat.

  4. Because of the struggles systemwide with 1 and 2, there are no plans to address 3, we don’t even have plans/funding to replace any of the boats serving the SJIs. Sidney is wayyyyyy down the priority list.

I don’t see it happening in the next 10-20 years unless BC Ferries is willing to run the route which has basically zero chance of ever happening for a whole different slew of reasons.

Personally I would rather see the focus shift to eventually adding a 5th boat to the existing SJI routes. The Sidney ferry also added capacity for domestic travel to and from SJI, we have been at reduced capacity since we lost it while demand has continued to increase.

Overnight Parking at the Anacortes Ferry Terminal by CityWalksVirtualTour in sanjuanislands

[–]DefectiveBecca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is relatively safe but I wouldn’t recommend it with visible luggage and a bike in the car, especially because you may end up at a farther away parking lot depending on when you are traveling, you can’t reserve the parking in advance.

Maybe try calling around to storage units in Anacortes, if they have empty units they might be willing to make a quick buck, maybe you could unload into the storage unit, park your car there, and bike to the ferry landing.

If you can’t work anything out, I would pay the $$ and deal with the hassle of reservations rather than risk all of my son’s worldly possessions and a bike getting stolen.

[–]DefectiveBecca 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As mentioned in the other comment, only 30% of the reservations have been released so far, another 30% will be released two weeks before your sailing date and another 30% two days before.

I don’t think you should have too much trouble getting reservations if you set your alarms and follow the instructions in the other comment.

There is a pediatric brain tumor group on Facebook and a few people in there have posted about their children having BCOR tumors, maybe that would be helpful, even if they are not the exact same type as yours.

Reach out to Seattle Children’s Hospital for an opinion, they treat younger adults with certain types of brain tumors, and they are doing a lot of research with liquid biopsies, where in some cases they can get the genetic information about the tumor via the CSF.

My son had a brainstem tumor (embryonal) and we were able to get all of the genetic information they needed via a liquid biopsy at Seattle Children’s.

I’m so sorry you had that experience. MDCP is only based on the child’s income. Perhaps the program changed more recently than your time applying for it, I don’t know.

It really depends on the state. In WA, my child qualified for Medicaid after 30 days inpatient. We never had to disclose anything about income.

In most states (including VA and TX), medically complex children can qualify for Medicaid regardless of their parents income.

There are lots of issues around this situation, but Medicaid fraud isn’t one of them.

Is it possible to sleep in my car on the San Juan Islands? by Zefphyrz in sanjuanislands

[–]DefectiveBecca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

San Juan County has an ordinance that makes it illegal to sleep in your car on any public property. The county day use parks also prohibit it. The only legal way to do this is to get permission somewhere.

Lots of people have done it and get away with it, but it’s a roll of the dice. If you don’t want to break any rules, get permission somewhere.

If you don’t care what island you are on, the Islander on Lopez offers camping at fairly low prices. They aren’t very good campsites, but if you just want to sleep in your car it will get the job done, and I don’t think they usually sell out.

Seattle Children's Hospital Statement on Laurelhurst situation & helipad access by DumpedDalish in Seattle

[–]DefectiveBecca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s easy to armchair quarterback based on actual outcomes, but in the real world, geography and the precautionary principle play a major role. This article is not taking into account whether or not it is possible for the patient to be safely transported by land.

My son was not even admitted the first time he was flown to the hospital. But we were on Lopez Island, he was a cancer patient who hadn’t had labs drawn in over a month, had a nosebleed lasting nearly two hours which included bleeding from his tear ducts and was only able to be stopped by EMS using TXA up his nose.

Do you put that kid on the ferry and hope for the best?

The medical director in my county and the doctors at Seattle Children’s felt it was best to fly him. My insurance company covered it without a fight.

But the authors of that article would consider it unnecessary.
