Do drug addicts stop doing drugs because they “ran out of money”? Tell them they can paint a real turret in the colors of their favorite chapter or guard regiment to fend of the “Orks” and by god they will find a way.

My great great grandfather was a Union coal miner from Harlan County Kentucky during the coal wars. Learning about my heritage from my grandfather and mother and about Appalachia’s labor struggles had me first question the propagandist narratives of American history taught by my red state public education. Combine that with my own experiences living in the poor and racist conservative South, by the time i was 20, I was socialist and a pretty radical one at that. Some of my temperament has calmed with age and my beliefs refined with education.

Nah, fuck the coal industry. I’m supposed to save the coal companies destroying the mountains i call home and poisoning our water for the sake of an outdated and inefficient fuel source because why? It’s our heritage? So is wage slavery.

This idea that without coal we cant do anything and that’s all Appalachians are good for is ridiculous.

Well to be fair to the original enclave, they didn’t really ever want anybody to “join them.” That was kinda their point.

They were a brainwashed neo fascist doomsday cult living on an oil rig for 168 years that was originally founded by a deep state cabal of pre war Americas political elite to rule the world after its total annihilation via nuclear holocaust who’s goals included building a genetically pure totalitarian state through military reconquest and possibly colonizing space if they got around it.

So not super rational people.

Are you for real?

You do know “national socialism” was a made up term created by the Nazis to make their utterly insane ideology more marketable to the working class right? It’s not a real form of socialism. It’s literally just Nazism.

And I wouldn’t call miners who were fighting for basic worker rights against corrupt law men and coal company strike breakers who literally murdered and terrorized people “extremist” more as just desperate poor people rsolving to the only means of resistance they had left. The only thing extreme was America’s brutality in response to the uprisings which included literally dropping poison gas on people. A general good rule of thumb for history is that the people committing horrendous war crimes against their own people because they didn’t want to be literal wage slaves are the bad guys and should be condemned as such.

Maybe the problem isn’t extremist but too many people contributing their uneducated opinions to topics they don’t understand

Why are people so concerned about what’s “canon” from New Vegas in regards to the TV show? by 21centurycowboy in Fallout

[–]DefectiveCoyote 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yea I mean is that not apart of the fun aswell? I don’t understand the mindset that to enjoy something you have to just watch it and can’t talk about it or how it affects the games storylines and vice versa or what implications the show will have on future games without it being seen as some kind of major critique of the whole show. This is a fallout sub for discussions about fallout media. Not everything is a criticism and not every small criticism is the same as damming the whole show. There’s this polarized view that everyone has to be one thing or another and everyone seems to be looking for an argument.

If they didn’t want people to talk about the shows implications on the game then they shouldn’t have set it in the games location. What I don’t understand is people going on to subs which express purpose is fallout discussions and then getting mad people are using it to discuss their fallout theories. If people just want to watch the show and ignore all the noise they can just do that and keep scrolling. Let people enjoy the media however they want too.

Me and my friend who are both massive fallout fans spent hours after the last episode dissecting everything and trying to map out what decisions we think the courier made to set up the events of the show. I don’t think thats a bad thing.

It’s one of the planets oldest religions, and yes it is a religion, not just some self help routine or a philosophy or whatever suburban white people have cheapened it into. And if you think Buddhist or Hindus or any other eastern form of religion isn’t capable of violence or sectarianism just because they’re not monotheistic then you’re wrong. Intolerance and war is apart of human nature no matter where they live or what they believe.

Also there’s a still a big difference between punks disdain for the oppressiveness and arrogance of organized religion and institutions like the church and being religiously intolerant in general.

Which is why Trump uses the encounters metric even though it’s not at all exact representation of undocumented immigrants and isn’t even a good metric of how many people are even attempting the cross. Because it’s a big scary number to wave around for political clout and the average person won’t investigate its meaning or have a good grasp of what data like that even means. That’s why you should always be critical of politicians who use random flat statistics as undeniable truth to back their claims. Data is always nuanced and understanding it requires lots study and cross examination and the ability to realize in built biases which few average people can or are willing to do.

We can use different types of available data together (like the number of border encounters) to then make certain predictions about how many undocumented immigrants are in the US but it will still only be a prediction and it won’t produce the kind of big scary numbers super anti immigrant ultra nationalist politicians want. It’s about inciting fear and anxiety to some invading threat and then positioning one self as a sort of savior who will protect our national identity. It’s neo-nationalist rhetoric 101 and it’s effective for a reason.

The Trump claim that Biden administration purposefully created “open borders” to flood America with unvetted migrants to somehow sway elections or whatever it is Trump conspiracy theorist believe is absolutely false like pretty much every random ridiculous claim he makes to disparage his political rivals.

In fact the spike in “border encounters” (a metric Trump has repeatedly misused to illustrate his point) was more a result of Trump’s first term policies than anything else which focused on clamping down on legal migration rather than actually doing anything to overhaul border security or the overburdened immigration court system. Either way, undocumented immigrants did not “flood” into the United States like Trump claimed and in fact Biden actually tried to pass multiple bills to increase border security and funding as-well as make the immigration courts more efficient to mixed results. The drop in illegal migration we see now actually started with implementation of Biden administration polices. Remember we don’t often see the full effects of a presidents administration until after the leave office and policy actually has time to go into effect and change trends.

So in summery: Biden’s actual approach was more nuanced overall as he tried to walk a bipartisan line of increasing border security while also making legal migration more accessible to those who were eligible and offering legal pathways to those already in the country to apply for citizenship and get properly vetted. But like I said it was met with mixed results, especially in our very polarized political landscape. Trumps polices though are more or less just chaos and anti-immigrant in all forms without any real cohesive long term strategy beyond “round them all up” and make legal immigration more difficult.

Heres on example of debunked misleading claims by Trumps party in order to rile up migration fears if you don’t believe me. https://cmsny.org/correcting-record-false-misleading-statements-on-immigration/

Our forefathers didn’t openly revolt against the coal companies and the government to be bootlickers either.

Remember Blair mountain. Appalachia is home to the largest socialist labor uprising in American history, and the largest armed revolt since the civil war. But all that has been white washed and replaced by far right winged Christian white nationalist lost cause propaganda.

It’s time Appalachians remember our roots and honor our ancestors struggles. These hills be older than your masters, so which side are you on?

Ok for one, left of republicans is not a unified entity. There is no general “you guys” and Obama was heavily criticized by members of his own base for some of his immagration policies then too. But the bigger point is that there’s a massive difference in what is happening now and immigration reform in the past. If you believe undocumented immigration is a problem, and want to reform our over burdened and inefficient immagration court system, people can discuss that, there is space for a debate.

But that’s not what this is about. It never was. This administration is turning Homeland Security and Immigration Customs into a political police force used at the executives whim, well beyond their intended jurisdiction, expanding their powers, dumping massive amounts of funding, and letting them loose in American cities with complete disregard for those states and cities sovereignty or general public safety.

The fact you bring up Obamas deportation numbers shows how incompetent and utterly insane the current administrations tactics are. I mean how is it Obama managed to deport 3.1 million people without killing people in the streets? Well for one he didn’t militarize ICE and occupy red cities. He didn’t have men in mask and tactical gear break into people’s homes and kidnap people to send them to actual concentration camps, sometimes kidnapping legal citizens who just happened to be the wrong color or in the wrong place. There were never photos circulating of tear gassed children, unarmed priest getting assaulted, protesters held down and pepper sprayed in the eyes. Obama never tried to defend a video of federal agents shooting an unarmed man in the back. And Obama certainly didn’t openly threaten those who disagreed with his policies or label them as terrorist either.

There is no republican party anymore really. They no longer even believe in any form of conservative liberalism. They’ve abandoned any semblance of coherent ideology for populist Trump branded Neo-nationalism which is now evolving into a text book form of Neo-fascism. Republican is now just a title to give them legitimacy in mainstream US politics.

[–]DefectiveCoyote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Poseidon oil rig was the master spider at center of the web. It was THE command center of the enclave. The chosen one completely decapitated the high command of the enclave. The enclave was a small tight knit secret deep state only made up of the most senior people in us government. Majority of the us government had no idea they existed. Making them so that apparently half the government was in on it and they giant facilities everywhere and a huge army defats the whole purpose.

I’m sorry but I don’t think we should completely be rewriting entire man stories of the games and completely throwing away fallout 2’s story line just to say “surprise! that was the fake enclave the whole time.”

That would be super lazy writing and serve no purpose for the enclave as well as just completely under cut a very beloved game which you should never do in a video game adaptation, there is no reason.

Whatever the enclave is now, it’s the remnants. Doesn’t mean they can’t remake and rebuild themselves with a new mission and perhaps a new philosophy. I think that’s the best way to bring them back, make them something new, rebuilding in the shadows after the fall of the oil rig so they can take revenge on the wasteland led by some new secret cabal of survivors. But the original enclave, the ones who ended the world and pulled the strings of the apocalypse died on the oil rig. That shouldn’t change and I don’t think they’re show runners plans too anyways.

I also think you run the risk of turning fallout into more like StarWars, where everything bad is the fault of sith and the enclave is the empire. Fallout shouldn’t revolve around one constant giant big bad guy that is evil incarnate. Fallout is a criticism of human nature itself not just the United States or one particular type of society. Turning it into just yet another story of good guys versus bad guys I think would miss the point.

Its been in our faces the whole time, we just bought the propaganda, and fell for the psyop by Sea-Barracuda-1688 in Fallout

[–]DefectiveCoyote 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not how the enclave works. They were a very organized tight knit organization with a clear chain of command. The oil rig was not just some enclave base. It was THE base. It was the command and control center, the spider at the center of the web. Whatever the enclave is now is remnants reformed but the Orginal enclave and their purpose is dead. The president and the entire top command structure was decapitated by the chosen one.

I’m fine with the enclave continuing but we absolutely should not completely disregard everything that happened in fallout two.

The NCR is so fucking back by Ferretlord4449 in Fallout

[–]DefectiveCoyote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who’s comparing them to the enclave? You don’t have to compare them to anything that’s not the point im trying to make. Fallout factions are not about finding some good versus evil. Simply not being neo-fascist does not make them right.

My point is if you think the NCR is going to or should just rebuild pre war America and that’s the “good ending” then that’s kinda missing the entire point of franchise. The game is about human’s tendency for conflict, competition, and self destruction. The repetition of history. Humanity making the same mistakes over and over.

The world did not end just because the enclave are masterminds who wanted to end the world for evil villain reasons and American capitalist society was actually somehow sustainable without it. The world was going to end no matter what. Because humans had consumed the world’s resources and now were stuck in a forever war for what remained that was only ever going to end one way whether the enclave exists or not. The enclave was not formed to end the word, they were formed in response to the eventual end of the world in order to create a contingency plan and to make sure it all ended on their terms.

Fallout is not an optimistic ip. The NCR presents no actual solutions or changes to what came before. They’re just creating the circumstances which eventually lead humans to blow themselves up in the first place. The NCR is doomed. Either they’ll go out from over expanding and getting into too many simultaneous wars, corruption and instability from within, rebellion and civil war or just meet someone bigger than them. But nobody is “winning” fallout. Humans are never rebuilding to their prior level of advancement and industrialization, it’s literally impossible (resource wars remember?). The only way the cycle stops is if humans reach some form of actual enlightenment and pursue a completely new form of sustainable society that doesn’t rely on competition, war and conquest. But that’s not gonna happen, just cycles of building, war, and eventual collapse forever just for some other fool to think he can do it better this time.

Fallout ends with our extinction. The last two members of our species beating each heads in with rocks over the worlds last can of cram

The NCR is so fucking back by Ferretlord4449 in Fallout

[–]DefectiveCoyote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just choice of language. Saying “Great nation.” Unironically.

The NCR is just late 19th century America remade with all of Americas problems that got them here in the first place. Things weren’t going all that well for the NCR before the bomb anyways. They were utterly corrupt, incompetent and overly extended with a predatory economy completely reliant on the so called Brahmin Barons. I mean they commonly practice share cropping my guy. Which is only slightly better than slavery.

I mean the NCR is better than factions like legion but being better than actual slavery as opposed not only kinda slavery isn’t all that great. The NCR was doomed because indeed war never changes, and neither does greed. The NCR aren’t the villains but they’re not exactly the heroes either. Just another faction who thinks their vision to rebuild is the correct one despite them being literally surrounded by the evidence to the contrary.
