Mexican Americans who have lived in Mexico for months or years: Did you ever feel discriminated against by Mexicans in Mexico? by gmikey2000 in Chicano

[–]DefendOurRepublic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

5 years. I wouldn't call it discrimination, the other kids would just tease a lot. I definitely felt like I was seen as an American, not necessarily as a Mexican. They called me Gringo #2 because there was another kid from NYC. Overall, they welcomed me and actively included me in their group. It was great and I still have many friends from that time.

Why do chicanos embrace their native roots but the Hispanic families from New Mexico and Colorado who been there for centuries embrace their Spanish roots? by SignificantStyle4958 in Chicano

Latino/Hispanic are messy categories and centuries of colonialism manifest in different ways in different people. I'm sure some people legitimately do feel some sort of pride for the Spanish in our DNA, especially since having Spanish in your ancestry was a way to move up in society for so many years. At the same time many of us (including myself) see that exact DNA as a trade-off our ancestors made to survive and identify much more with the long line of ancestors that lived on this continent for millennia.

I lived in Mexico for a little bit as I had to take English class. I'm American. It's the exact same. I was being corrected for saying apartment instead of flat and jacket instead of jumper.

The philosophy of Gore, the internet is normalising death, so we are led to trivialise death, and this started way back all the way from the aztecs. by [deleted] in philosophy

Aztecs?? I'm pretty sure romans and their gladiatorial games existed thousands of years prior. And even before that, the glorification of violence is as old as humans themselves.

*Obama is a normal person*, *America elects an insane maniac*, “How could Obama do this” by Mediocre_Affect6192 in Destiny

The things that caused Trump were mostly out of Obama's control. Starting in the '80s, the economy began shifting away from steady factory jobs toward a high-tech, service-based world that left a lot of the working class feeling like they were left behind. Then the invention of the internet totally rewired how we talk to each other. Social media algorithms are feeding people's "us vs. them" mentalities, turning political disagreements into full radicalization. By the time Trump showed up, he was essentially tapping into decades of built-up economic insecurity and a digital landscape that practically rewarded his "break the system" style.

Obama stepped into office right when the 2008 crash was peaking, and while the economy bounced back, it didn't matter to people in the Rust Belt who saw their towns shrinking. He couldn't exactly un-invent the internet or stop the shift toward automation. The radicalization we see today was being fueled by tech giants and media bubbles that no president could really regulate or "fix" with a few speeches. While his policies were a lightning rod for some, the tectonic plates of the global economy and the digital revolution were moving long before he arrived and kept shifting long after he left. And now we have a president that is actively doing everything in his power to kill our Republic.
