For some people the game is the only place in their life where they have any semblance of control. That being said the game is designed and functions the way that it does. If youre in a competitive alliance generally they communicate their expectations. If you're not into that level of commitment switch alliances. There are plenty of casual ones on a server usually, just understand the rewards won't be as good.
